Dinner with Android

Dinner with Android 01/19/2004 02:53 AM

Here is a conversation from the near future:

Bob: I am reading Don Park's Visual Thinking now.  It's really good.

Joe: Is that Park with an 's'?

Bob: No, just Park.  Here. [Bob beams Joe Amazon URL]

Joe: Hmm.  Reviews look good.  OK, I ordered it.

Bob: ...

Joe: ...

On the surface, there seems to be nothing wrong.  But notice the type of question being asked.  With information at your fingertip, the need to ask for information from another person diminishes.  So instead of asking about the book, Joe is asking about query terms.  He could have also said “Could You?“ and Bob would have interpreted it as request to beam URL or search words.

I don't know about you, but it seems like technology is eating away at the meat of everyday social life, leaving just the bare bones.

In respect to blogging, I wonder how blogging affects a person's life.  More opinionated?  Less inquisitive about other people's opinions because they are already exposed to a wide range of opinions online?  Nice chewy topic I think.

Better Android Skin

Better Android Skin 10/30/2003 11:57 PM
According to a NewScientist.com article, researchers Sigurd Wagner and Stephanie Lacour of Princeton University's Macroelectronics Group have developed an elastic metal film that can stretch up to twice its own length while remaining conductive. It can be embedded in silicone and still stretch up to 15%. The material should be ideal for androids, humanoid robots that need life-like skin which can also carry wiring for sensors. A betterhumans.com article includes a photo of a prototype silicone membrane with embedded conductors.

Meet Valerie (for $59,000, including a two-year warranty).

"We are now accepting orders for up to 6 complete and operational Valerie androids for delivery at Christmas of 2004. Valerie is the most advanced android in the world having more degrees of freedom than any android shown up to now. She uses the AT&T speech synthesizer giving the most human-sounding voice available today. She is also easily the most anthropomorphic android available.

She will have a high degree of artificial intelligence due to our proprietary AI software - and a generalized interface to the internet (the only existing super-intelligence). Order now - before you get backlogged in a 3 year waiting list!"

Philip K. Dick Returns as an Android

Philip K. Dick Returns as an Android 06/24/2005 09:06 PM
Showing once again that reality is stranger than fiction, Philip K. Dick has returned from the dead via FedEx. "In an unparalleled technical collaboration, a team of artists, writers, engineers, literary scholars, and freethinkers are creating a lifelike, android portrait of one of America's well-known science-fiction writers Philip K Dick." Among the FedEx-sponsored team is David Hanson, best known to robots.net readers as the creator of K-Bot, an android copy of his girlfriend. Much of the work was done at UTA's Automation and Robotics Research Institute where it was supervised by Paul Williams, a friend of the author. David Hanson's skills provide the life-like android head which reproduces Dick's facial expressions. Other experts have provided face recognition and expression recognition technology for the android. The robot is also said to have full speech recognition and synthesis ability combined with the best in convesational AI. For more, see the Hanson Robotics press release or the PKD-Android homepage (Flash content). You can see the android in a reconstruction of his natural habitat at the Wired Magazine NextFest, June 24-27 in Chicago.

Social Mechanisms of Android Science 01/05/2005 02:02 PM
A call for papers has been issued for a planned CogSci2005 event called the Android Science Workshop. The theme is "Toward Social Mechanisms of Android Science". According to their website, "the aim of this workshop is to begin to lay a foundation for research in android science, a new field that integrates the synthetic approach from robotics with the empirical methodologies of the social sciences." They include humanoid robots in their definition of androids, as well as other artificial constructs with human-like appearance and behavior.

Facial Gestures To Surf The Web

Facial Gestures To Surf The Web 09/15/2004 09:49 PM
Worried about carpal tunnel? Maybe you should stop using your hands altogether when controlling your computer. A Canadian inventor has developed a system to control a mouse by where your nose is pointed, while letting you click with the blink of an eye (left eye, left click; right eye, right click). The idea, of course, behind this "nouse" system is to use it for people with disabilities. Of course, as someone points out in the article, the fact that using this could make you look quite silly may not go over particularly well. I also wonder how it deals with just regular blinking.
