Symantec Buys Brightmail - A Step
Towards Hybrid Spam Fighting
05/19/2004 05:48 PM
We've talked in the past about how the ways to fight all that ails your computer are converging. Symantec is realizing this, and has decided to to buy anti-spam firm Brightmail for $370 million. Symantec was already an investor in the company and owned approximately 11%. However, it does demonstrate that a single approach to fighting things like spam no longer makes sense. You can't just have a network level protection system or a desktop level protection. Increasingly, computer security requires something of a hybrid model - and this acquisition supports that idea.

Symantec Steps Up

Symantec Steps Up 05/27/2004 10:48 AM
Symantec Corp., in what can only be viewed as a welcome and generous act, has made their DeepSight Analyzer service available for free to the general public. This service has previously only been available to enterprise-level companies willing to shell out the money necessary. The DeepSight service does several important things- it gives you day-by-day sutomated reports of your system activity, access to the Analyzer Console online, and you can use it to generate summary reports of that activity. Now,why is that important? Because, in the even t of an attack and infection by an unknown virus or worm, that summary of activity can help you pinpoint in very short order the fact that your system?s strange behavior isn?t a figment of your imagination. That?s the first step in finding out what?s going on and how to stop it. It can isolate the strange actions so that you can figure out how to stop it.This would have been a huge plus to me during the recent attack on my system. I might have been able to isolate the problem days sooner. So get busy and get yourself set up with the DeepSight Analyzer as soon as possible! It?s one more piece of protection and you can seldom have too much protection.Keep in mind that this is NOT an anti-virus program. It simply provides a tool that can give you an edge if you should ever have to deal with an infection. As such, it doesn?t conflict with already installed anti-virus software. It certainly can be a life-saver, nonetheless.
