PDF/A Moving Forward

PDF/A Moving Forward 05/27/2004 10:46 AM

Feds help create PDF archiving standard: We've writt en about this initiative before. Looks like it's moving ahead.

The committee hopes to release a draft of the PDF/A standard by early next year with a final standard out by the end of 2005, said committee member Stephen Levenson, who works in the administrative office of the U.S. Courts.

Briefly, the idea is to create a simplified subset of the PDF format so that PDF documents created today can still be opened and worked with, say, 20 years from now.

FCC moving forward on VOIP

FCC moving forward on VOIP 02/10/2004 02:47 AM
The FCC will address two voice over IP items at its February meeting next Thursday:

ITEM NO. BUREAU SUBJECT

1 WIRELINE COMPETITION TITLE: Petition for
Declaratory Ruling that Pulver.com’s Free World Dialup
is Neither Telecommunications Nor a Telecommunications
Service (WC Docket No. 03-45).
SUMMARY: The Commission will consider a Memorandum
Opinion and Order concerning Pulver.com’s petition for
declaratory ruling regarding the classification of its
Free World Dialup service.

2 WIRELINE COMPETITION TITLE: IP-Enabled Services.
SUMMARY: The Commission will consider a Notice of
Proposed Rulemaking concerning issues relating to
services and applications making use of the Internet
Protocol, including but not limited to “voice over
Internet Protocol.”

Look closely at the summary of the second item, which is the kickoff of the long-awaited VOIP proceeding. The Commission is bending over backwards to emphasize that these are data applications, not another form of telephony as we know it.

The framing is clearly intended to set up a decision not to subject VOIP to legacy regulation as a "telecommunications service." We'll see if that's what happens; the Chairman controls what gets proposed but needs three votes to adopt anything. The VOIP proceeding is going to draw out a great deal of political activity on both sides. There is a strong group of interests that will advocate regulation in order to protect existing revenues and subsidy flows.

This will be an important fight for the future of the Internet. The tech community needs to realize what's at stake, and support efforts to keep VOIP out of the legacy regulatory environment.

Brain Implants Moving Forward

Brain Implants Moving Forward 04/13/2004 02:10 PM
Just last month we were talking about how new evidence showed that brain controlled implants worked in the human brain, and now a company is moving forward with human brain control tests by implanting chips into the brains of people who are paralyzed people to see if they can control a computer with their thoughts. Some see this as a step forward, while others are afraid that it's going too fast - noting that any kind of problem could set back the entire space for years.

Nextel Moving Forward With Wireless
Broadband Offering

Nextel Moving Forward With Wireless
Broadband Offering
04/14/2004 01:05 PM
Back in February, Nextel made quite a splash with their surprise announcement that they were offering wireless broadband trials in North Carolina based on Flarion's technology. While Nextel has apparently been looking at a variety of wireless broadband technologies, it appears that they've been happy with the North Carolina Flarion trials so far. They've expanded the coverage area and are now going to accept paying customers to the service, which offers DSL-like speeds. They say it will average 1.5 Mbps down stream and 375 kbps upstream - with burst rates at double that. The cost of the plans will vary between $35 and $75 depending on speeds and other features (such as email accounts and storage). Clearly, this is something of a vote for Flarion's technology, and it will be interesting to see if Nextel continues to expand this offering (which sounds like it would be quite competitive with Verizon Wireless's EV-DO offering) and whether or not they publicly trial other technologies as well. Of course, launching in one location and launching nationwide are two very different beasts, but Nextel has shown that they've got quite a lot of marketing muscle - and are especially good at segmenting and targeting specific markets.

Something to look forward to

Something to look forward to 01/04/2005 06:02 PM
The Washington Post front page today lays out the Bush administration's plans to cut promised Social Security benefits by almost a third in the coming decades. The toughest cuts wouldn't come til mid-century, but if Bush's plan actually gets enacted, the consequence is clear: This won't be your grandfather's Social Security. To make up the difference of what retirees won't get every month, the Bush proposal would rely on personal investment accounts. But of course, that's just a hope. Will the federal government give Investing 101 classes to those who need it? It pays for marriage classes, after all.

Just got this in my mail - and it's 2AM - so I guess Judith must be asleep - or else she would have blogged it already.

MySpace now has improved their Groups - and added it to their lineup of better blogging, classifieds, very coolio music features and special 'band groups'.

MySpace has proven that it really is about the activities and giving people something to do. IM, Ranking and Games seem to be the core activities.

Business model? Ads. Sposnorships. Special Band Groups. Watch for even mroe ''premium' features that folks will pay for. How many of them - you ask? Over 2M.

Man oh man - I just can't wait for the Reality TV show.

Just gotta convince Tom to support the FOAFnet.

Jet lagged, but Flashed Forward

Jet lagged, but Flashed Forward 07/09/2004 01:44 PM

I arrived last night, made the mistake of eating a cheeseburger before bed and didn't sleep much and felt REALLY BAD this morning.

I crawled onto stage at Flash Forward this morning feeling very scattered and weak, but thanks to a strong topic and lots of funny movies to keep people awake, I was able to struggle through my talk. I talked about Creative Commons, Intellectual Property and the future of marketing. I channeled lots of Lessig and Godin. We did a Q&A session afterwards and I really enjoyed talking to the Flash community. Flash and Creative Commons makes SO MUCH SENSE together. The conference is extremely well organized and cool. I got to meet Stewart McBride and Lynda Weinman who really run a class act. Looking forward to figuring out some way to work with them on something...

After that, I went over to NPR and did a short interview about what I read. Blogs of course. ;-) I think the 20 min or so will be edited down to 3 min so I'm not sure what's going to end up in the interview, but I'll post a link once I know when it's going to air.

So no more public speaking until Apsen next week. Time to relax...

Softbots Stride Forward By Siobhan McBride of ComputerWorld

"Can't make next week's videoconference with head office? No problem, your computer-generated avatar will stand in for you; having been created in your image it's a shrewd strategist in complete command of the points you wish to make - including your fallback position. While it sounds like it may be a long time coming, research into intelligent agents, software programs also known as 'softbots', is progressing so quickly scientists predict this scenario could be a reality within 10 years. ... Two researchers headed down this path are Professor Ryszard Kowalczyk, of Swinburne University's faculty of Information and Communication Technology, and Professor Jun Han, also of Swinburne University, who heads a contribution to an Australian-European Union consortium developing service-orientated computing systems of the future. ... The project plan is to develop agents to automate the interchange and composition of software and services via the Internet, including software components to coordinate business activities such as supply, distribution and sales."

Fast-forward e-learning

Fast-forward e-learning 03/25/2005 05:08 PM
A few weeks ago, my blog featured a screencast with Jason Hunter, a Java expert now working for Mark Logic. Jason's current fascination (and now mine) is the XML-oriented query language, XQuery. During our 12-minute demo/discussion, he alternated between applications shown in a browser and code exposition in a command shell.

A few days later, inspired by what Jason had shown me, I began working with the Mark Logic engine myself. As is my custom when learning a new programming environment, I opened up a flock of browser tabs. Some I filled with documentation about the XQuery language, others with code examples.

And then a funny thing happened. I found myself ignoring all those tabs and returning again and again to the screencast. Jason's demos were springboards for the things I wanted to do, and his code narration had shown me how to do them.

...

It wasn't just that Jason had transferred parts of his mental map to me in the ancient way: monkey see, monkey do. His live performance merely showed me what was possible. I still had to revisit scenes in order to learn the details, and thanks to the video, I could.

People with seemingly superhuman memories give us clues about how this works. When asked about their talent, they invariably say they've learned to hang information on a narrative that structures what they know and makes it easy to access. We're hardwired to tell ourselves -- and one another -- stories, and to filter our understanding of the world through them.

Civilization took a great leap forward when we learned how to write stuff down. Now we're learning to film our stories and to TiVo them. Fasten your seat belt. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
