New Nokia, Codename: Charlie

New Nokia, Codename: Charlie

New Nokia, Codename: Charlie 05/19/2004 10:21 PM

And, since I missed this earlier, pictures of a new Nokia smartphone survaced today, code-named 'Charlie NPI5' (I have no idea). Not much is know about features at the moment, but it has hot-swapping of MMC-cards, which is good, and the production model is said to have a 1.3-megapixel camera....

You know, we just can't win with Nokia. First they send me threatening letters all last month about removing pictures of the 'Codename: Charlie' 6630 (which we dutifully, if quietly, ignored), then they screw up my peaceful Monday morning by announcing 5 new phones. Rather than give them all my precious front page space, we'll take a look at all the new phone goodness after the jump.

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

The current ish of Popular Science (August 2004) is on stands now, with a great piece on Charlie Stross and me as science fiction writers who are doing good work on the Singularity (alas, the piece isn't online yet, but it's easy to find in shops). I'm really happy with how it came out, but wanted to give out one tiny bit of errata for the record: the article identifies me as a co-founder of boingboing.net -- although I'm a proud co-editor of BB, the founding was done by my pal Mark Frauenfelder and his wife Carla Sinclair. When Lonestar comes out sometime next year - as announced - it will be a free download. A relatively small download too (about, say 10 MB for the core part, not including any updated recognizers that could be released by then). It is user installable. It installs quickly, similar to any other Windows XP update. You can even uninstall it, should you choose to do so. Existing tablet hardware will be able to run it without major problems. Case in point - I am running it on my underpowered Crusoe-cursed first-generation Compaq TC1000, and I can't notice any performance hit.

Charlie Stross, posthuman: April Fools'
from Paul Di Filippo
04/03/2005 01:24 PM
Cory Doctorow: Paul Di Filippo wrote a great April Fools' article for Locus on my pal and collaborator Charlie Stross becoming posthuman:
"Charlie was teetering on the precipice of transhumanism for the whole last year," said his friend and collaborator Cory Doctorow. "His lifestyle and cerebral/neurological capabilities had been ramped up through intensive ideation and selective smart-drug use to an exquisite pitch just short of the Singularity. When he laid his hands on that sweet, sweet hunk of hardware, it provided the critical mass of complexification necessary to tip him over fully into the Extropian ideal condition."

The resulting state-change brought total en-bobblement to an area of several cubic miles surrounding the store where Stross made his climactic purchase. It is presumed that the newly born ineffable deity once known as Stross is localized within the stasis-sphere, but authorities differ over containment theories.

headset_gps_nkoi.jpg imageAnd last but not least (if you're reading from the bottom up; otherwise, welcome to the Nokia posts!) are these two new peripherals from Nokia, a new Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W headset with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that also connects to your phone or PDA via Bluetooth (the GPS may not actually be new - it seems sort of familiar - but I don't exactly recall hearing about it before). The GPS unit uses the same battery and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing charge to go along with it.

The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't scheduled until Q1 2005.

nokia_1600.jpgNokia announced their 1600 and 1110 models, meant to be affordable, easy-to-use and light on frills. Nokia is targeting developing nations with these models and they look well enough to suit their purpose as part of a plan to eventually offer mobile service for just $5 a month. They both feature talk times of over 5 hours and the Nokia 1600 has a 65k color screen while the Nokia 1110 uses a sunlight-friendly inverted black and white display. They're expected to retail for $105 and $85, respectively, and will be available later this year.

Charlie Daniels' anti-anti-war rant

Charlie Daniels' anti-anti-war rant 03/15/2003 10:13 PM
Musician Charlie Daniels is disgusted by Hollywood types who oppose Bush's plan to invade Iraq.
You people are some of the most disgusting examples of a waste of protoplasm I’ve ever had the displeasure to hear about.

Sean Penn, you’re a traitor to the United States of America. You gave aid and comfort to the enemy. How many American lives will your little, ”fact finding trip“ to Iraq cost? You encouraged Saddam to think that we didn’t have the stomach for war.

You people protect one of the most evil men on the face of this earth and won’t lift a finger to save the life of an unborn baby.

Freedom of choice you say?

More Nokia Python

It looks like people haven’t been slow to get using Nokia’s Python project, and Matt Croydon has been collating projects and news on his Pyth on for Series 60 wiki page.

Seeing as there’s no central clearing house(other than Forum Nokia) for Nokia Python projects right now, I reckon this is as good a focal point as any.

The official public release of Python on Series 60 just came out on the 22nd of December. You can get it on Forum Nokia site. Comment - TrackBack
