class="center"/>Sanyo has updated its Xacti flash camcorder line
from the C1 model to these new C4s, which appear to have a few nice
improvements for those who go tapeless, including a video stabilizer,
an upgraded four-megapixel CCD for still images, and a slightly larger
LCD screen (1.8-inch instead of 1.5-inch). There are some other slight
changes, as well, but it doesn't look like the video quality is any
better; we're still talking VGA (640 by 480 pixels at 30 frames per
second). Not bad, but not an upgrade, either.
The new colors are nice, too, and I do love this form factor. It's
much more usable than I had first thought, and the docking stations
make them really handy. (Thanks, Martin!)

Living Room has information about a bunch of new
cameras from Pentax (and one from Sanyo), including this
5.36-megapixel Pentax Optio SV [pictured right], a slim-profile camera
with a 5x optical zoom; and the Sanyo Xacti VPC A5, another
5-megapixel camera, although this one has only a 2.8x optical zoom. In
addition, Pentax has a new DSLR (called the "*ist" - what is it with
camera companies and unpronounceable names? Asteriskist? Wildcardist?
Starist? Multiplyist? Fireballist?) and a pistol-grip hybrid
camera/camcorder coming out, as well.

Sanyo Announces New CEO
04/08/2005 10:39 AMSanyo Electric Corporation announced on the 8th
that they have a new CEO coming in, named Tomoyo Nonaka. This is a
significant move for the company as she is replacing Toshimasa Iue,
grandson of Sanyo founder Toshio Iue.
Tomoyo Nonaka is female. I wouldn't really bother to point this out
in fear of all the hate mail Joel will receive, but it's
Japan. Women's rights still have a very, very long way to go
over there (particularly in the corporate world), and this a step in
the right direction. Tomoyo Nonaka's experience is plentiful, from
being a newscaster to CEO of Asahi Beer.

If you're wondering how Sanyo can cram an
8-megapixel sensor into this new VPC-C4 camera, I can tell you:
cheating. It's really just a 4-megapixel unit which can use
interpolation to upscale the resolution of the shots. That's a not a
bad thing, really, but it will provide results far different than
those from a true 8-megapixel camera.
The VPC-C4 shares the form factor and much of the feature set of
its predecessor, the Fisher FVD-C1 and other Xacti models,
although it is improved in almost every way. It still uses just an SD
card for storage, for better and for worse.

Sanyo Creates Smallest FM Tuner Yet

Sanyo has
developed a tiny FM tuner chip that is roughly half the size of
current tuners on the market; they're calling it the "Easy Radio IC."
It requires no other parts to operate and even has an upcoming version
that can tune in AM as well (that's coming in September). At just 5mm
wide, there's not any reason that any portable music player should be
without FM radio, unless the manufacturer is just too stubborn to put
it in.

04/11/2005 10:47 AMIBM and Sanyo have unveiled a prototype methanol-powered fuel cell
system for ThinkPad notebooks, which claims to provide up to 8 hours
of additional battery life per cartridge. Unlike other fuel cell
designs for laptops, Sanyo's prototype requires no hardware
modification and works with existing ThinkPad batteries.

Sanyo has already developed a hybrid battery system with both standard
lithium ion battery and fuel cell which can be used on existing
ThinkPad models. Said system uses a 130cc cartridge, leading to about
8 hours of battery life. The best part, though, is hot-swapping fuel
cell cartridges for uninterrupted mobile computing. The worst part? It
weighs 2.2kg (nearly 5 pounds).

Double A rechargeable batteries are by far the most
commonly used, but there are definitely times when C-cell and D-cell
batteries would be handy to have around. Rather than provide
rechargeable cells in a variety of sizes, Sanyo's Family Battery
Charger Kit comes with four AA batteries and a set a 'FlexBat'
adapters, hollow plastic cylinders that act as spacers to allow you to
use the rechargeable AAs inside C- or D-cell-sized spaces. Of course,
the AA cells won't run as long as the larger cells would, but in a
pinch it's a handy way to always have the size of battery you need
available.

they would develop a micro direct methanol fuel cell system that could

The system could enable PCs to run continuously through constant power

reviews the Sprint PCS Vision Picture Phone PM-8200 by Sanyo
(whew!), and minor update to the PM-8200 that adds a
VGA-quality camera and Ready Link, Sprint's Push-to-Talk feature. Of
course, to use Ready Link, both parties will have to have a Sanyo
phone, so that may or may not be that hot of a selling point for you
yet. The camera sucks, too, but what did you expect out of a
VGA-quality clunker these days? Sanyo phones are solid, but the
PM-8200 is probably a little too pedestrian for most, unless you just
have a need or opportunity to use the Push to Talk.

Let's say you learnt a subject really well, and were asked to teach
others. You enjoy teaching and others admire your teaching style. Then
one day, you throw away all your notes and teach off-the-cuff, from

You have to really know your stuff before you'd dare do that.

Where librarians go to hack
Where librarians go to hack
05/03/2004 07:24 PMProving you can never be too pedantic (in a good way, mind you), I
bring you
hacker librarians:
There is a subculture of librarians that could make a significant
impact on the profession. They are women and men, youthful and
experienced alike, who all share one thing: a passion for solving
problems by creating software. They are hacker librarians.
Hacker librarians are not afraid to configure and install software.
They do not shrink from writing a program in whatever flavor of 'P'
language they favor, from Perl to Python, with the hardiest even
tackling Java and C++. Beyond enjoying the hunt for the right
solution, they like to create solutions with colleagues and appreciate
those who can provide knowledge about user needs and experiences.
Dewey Hacks, anyone?
The underscore hack
The underscore hack
11/25/2003 10:25 PMVia Web-Graphics, Petr
Pisar's Underscore
Hack provides a new way of targetting CSS rules specifically at Internet Explorer on
Windows. As with all such hacks, the pros and cons of using this
approach need to be closely examined before deploying it. The hack
takes advantage of the fact that adding an underscore to the start of
a property name causes that declaration to be ignored by every browser
except IE for Windows.
However, the hack takes the dangerous step of using one bug to solve
another. Peter-Paul Koch explained why this is a risky thing to do in
a recent column for Digital
Web magazine:
A certain browser has a certain CSS bug. Good to know.
This same browser has another bug, usually in its parsing of CSS
selectors or comments. This, too, is important information. However, a
CSS hacker proceeds to use the second bug to "solve" the first
one.
Solving one bug by another is not my idea of keeping Web
development simple, but the matter goes beyond bad coding style. These
hacks are inherently unsafe.
In an ideal world the next release of the browser would solve both
bugs. In an uncaring world the next release of the browser would solve
neither. In the uncertain world we live in the next release could
solve one bug but not the other!
Therefore you could end up with a hack that applies an extra rule
you no longer need, or with a necessary extra rule that isn't applied
any more.
In my opinion, hacks like this are safe for use on sites that are
being actively maintained. If you use them in a "fire and forget"
project you could well find it breaking in new browsers in a few years
time, when the site is no longer being maintained but remains online
and broken for all to see. If on the other hand you use it for a
living, breathing site such as a constantly changing commercial
project or a personal weblog errors that crop up in future browsers
can be taken on as and when they appear.
When all is said and done, a large proportion of hacks in use today
exist to combat the infamous box model problem - and the best advice
for coping with that can be found on Dave Shea's CSS
Crib Sheet: Try
to avoid applying padding/borders and a fixed width to an element
.
Do that, and box model hacks just stop being necessary.
