05/19/2004 01:30 PMFrom Microsoft Watch: Microsoft has been backing a proposal for
a new .mobi top-level domain that is under consideration by ICANN. But
the father of the Internet, Tim Berners-Lee, doesn't like .mobi at
all. Nor does he like .xxx, .mail or the handful of other new domain
names that ICANN might adopt by early next year.
Safire Takes A Shot At Us
Safire Takes A Shot At Us
01/07/2004 02:11 PMWilliam Safire has managed, by his current lexicographical persona, to
obscure the memory that he once sat on the right hand of Richard
Nixon. He reminded me of that earlier, less avuncular, Safire this
morning. He has an op-ed in today's New York Times that is
astonishingly smug and nasty, even for him. In it, he gloats over his
perception of a deepening division between the centrist, Clinton-esque
wing of Democratic party and what he describes as "The Dean-Internet
Party, its Bush-despising base so energized as to be frenetic, its
leader happy to be the apostle of anger, its bandwidth bandwagon
gaining momentum with each pulse of its cursing cursor." There's more
to be said about the political depths of this remark, but it's
Christmas eve, and I'm in a charitable mood. Besides, the television
vs. Internet, Industrial vs. Virtual, corporate vs. individual nature
of this election, is a subject that demands more thorough discussion
than I have time for this morning. The most grimly entertaining part
of his screed comes at its end. Safire proposes a scenario in which
Dean will falter, and, after the Democratic party has been recaptured
by the Republicrats, he will leave the party in a sulk, creating
conditions for a Bush landslide. Safire worries that a huge Bush
mandate, as opposed to his mere reelection, might be bad for the
country. Right. We can't afford to lose this one, folks. If we do,
we'll have to set our watches back 60 years. If they even let us have
watches in the camps, that is....

and, more importantly, the parties of the Industry Standard. The
former high-flying bible of the Internet economy crashed and burned
during the dot-com debacle. IDG, which was the Standard's majority
owner during the glory days, bought the rights to the magazine's name
after it filed for bankruptcy in 2001.

Kids Only Domain Takes Three Years To
Get 21 Sites
06/05/2005 11:57 PMMore than three years ago, when US politicians set up the "kids-only"
domain of .kids.us, we wondered
how
many sites would actually bother with it, noting the "chicken and
egg" problem the domain faced. We now have an answer. Three years
into the experiment, there are
a grand total of 21 sites hosted in the special
.kids.us domain. Yes: twenty one. A thriving community. It probably
doesn't help that to host there you have to pay about $400 a year for
registration and "content review" vs. $7 or so to register a .com.
Somehow, we're confident that
.xxx
a> won't face the same problem.
