El Casco is a Spanish company that has been supplying desk-accessories and office products to the Spanish rail company since the 1920s. They have a line of premium reproductions of 1920s-era office tools, including a heart-stoppingly lovely stapler and pencil-sharpener (the pencil sharpener has a little window so you can peer into its guts and watch your pencil transformed). Japanese children's books from 1920s

Japanese children's books from 1920s 08/21/2004 12:55 PM
Xeni Jardin: Click image for full-size. Browsing through this beautiful gallery of children's book illos from the '20s, I keep thinking about the fact that these were all created during a period just before Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It's kind of fascinating to look at the art from this period of Japanese history, and consider the fact that the people who remember these books as part of their own child years were around my own age group -- twenty or thirtysomething -- when the bomb dropped and changed everything. Maybe a hundred years from now, some young person will stumble on an "Electric Company" episode and think, "Wow, that's what the 9/11 generation was watching in their diapers." There's some interesting analysis on a subsection of this website. Snip:
"The children in Kodomo no kuni seem to be enjoying the pleasures of modern city life. There are Western-style houses, trains and cars running along busy streets, airplanes flying in the sky, and subways passing beneath a townscape bristling with skyscrapers.

What is different from now is the energy and cheerfulness with which people seemed to be looking forward to the happy future that materialistic prosperity would surely bring."

Maybe those people 100 years ahead will look back on our enthusiasm for technology the same way. Someone in 2104 will take a break from watching Olympic nanorobotic doping scandal coverage on their ocular implants. They'll blink "pause," and browse the BoingBoing archives, and think, "How quaint, how naive. If only those poor fin-de-siecle suckers had stopped at Perl." Li nk to Kodomo no kuni (via MeFi)

The pencil man of Concord

The pencil man of Concord 02/10/2004 02:44 AM

People said that London was a center of theater and music but this is my second night here and there doesn't seem to be much action in town.  Perhaps it was not London, Ontario to which folks referred.  Anyway, in between test-flying Diamond Star N505WT, I'm reading Th e Pencil by Henry Petroski, 354 pages that demonstrate conclusively that at least one area of history has been justifiably ignored.

It turns out that, before setting off for Harvard College, Henry David Thoreau devoted quite a bit of time to figuring out how to blend graphite powder and clay into a pencil that could compete with the best English and French products.  He and his father were very successful pencil merchants in the 1840s.  As cheap German imports made the business less profitable the Thoreaus moved into supplying graphite powder for electrotype printing.  In 1853 Thoreau's friends asked him why he'd stopped making pencils.  He responded "Why should I?  I would not do again what I have done once."

Pencil necked chic

Pencil necked chic 07/02/2004 01:11 PM
Dweeb is the new black, according to this LA Times article about the transformed social status of geeks from outcasts to arbiters of cool. Why the author points to exposed underwear as an example of geek-originated style, I don't know -- that's a gangbanger thing, not a code warrior thing. Now, if they'd suggested pocket protectors as future haute couture accessories, yeah -- but until there are gold-encrusted ones in the Dior fall collection, I'm not totally buying the story's premise. Fun read, though. Article Link , hidden behind a dumbass site registration system that you can bypass with bugmenot.com. (Thanks, Mara!)

Spanish Flat

Spanish Flat 04/12/2004 06:15 PM

I got back yesterday but was too tired to post anything.  Everytime we go camping, we forget something and we forgot the air mattress this time.  Two nights without the luxury of air mattress was bad, but not being able to sleep thanks to noisy neighbors was even worse.  They were rude beyond comprehension.  Chopping wood at 3AM?

If you like tranquil camping experience, don't go to Spanish Flat Resort.  We had such a terrible time that we are never going anywhere near the damn place.  Yeah, it was that bad.

BTW, Comcast's e-mail server is not working today so I have no e-mail.  If you need to contact me until it's working again, leave a comment.
