The Apartment Phone (No, The Actual
Building)
07/09/2004 05:12 AMWell, if this isn't a Friday "Too Much Free Time" story, I'm not sure
what is. An eccentric Australian millionaire nicknamed "Crazy John"
for a popular chain of mobile phone retail shops (
Crazy Eddie
should sue -- though after his
problems with the law, he may not want to go anywhere near a
court room) now wants to use some of his millions to
build an apartment building in the shape of a
mobile phone -- complete with number buttons, "end" and "send"
buttons, and a "rooftop" antenna. He hasn't chosen what phone the
building will look like, but is hoping that a handset maker will pop
up and sponsor the project in return for the landmark advertising. Of
course, at the rate handset designs go out of style, this certainly
could be risky. Who would really want to live in an obsolete mobile
phone shaped building? Also, what would happen if the eventual
sponsor wanted it in the shape of a clamshell flip phone?

Free Site License To Online Office Suite
For Indiana Residents
06/24/2004 08:01 PMLast year, we had a story about the city of Houston
ditchin
g Microsoft in favor of an online office suite called SimDesk.
There hadn't been much news out of SimDesk since then, but
Broadband
Reports points us to a story about a new SimDesk deal with the
state of Indiana to
provide
SimDesk for free to every state resident for at least two years
(and possibly longer). It sounds similar to some "site licenses" that
many companies offer their employees or which universities offer their
students, though SimDesk isn't getting paid for this. Instead, they
seem to be doing it in exchange for an investment. Microsoft (just as
they did in Houston) is likely to cry foul, and complain that the
state is competing unfairly against them. It's also unclear from the
article how they prove who is an Indiana resident (the site appears to
require an address, but I imagine that could be faked). Also, what
happens if someone moves out of Indiana? Either way, the state could
just point people to something like OpenOffice, which is already free
if they really just wanted people to have a free office suite, instead
of having to set up a special SimIndiana site.

Building Playlists Of Free MP3s
Building Playlists Of Free MP3s
04/09/2004 04:04 PMDespite what the recording industry would have you believe, there
actually are a lot of bands who release tracks as MP3s for free
online, as a way of promoting their music. A while back Lucas Gonze
came up with the idea of helping people
create
web-based playlists for such free MP3s and ended up creating
Webjay. I had played around with it
a couple months ago when he launched it, but haven't had much time
since. It looks like many others, though, have started populating it
with some interesting playlists. The idea is not to include
unauthorized MP3s (and, in fact, those lists get taken down), but as a
way to help promote bands who realize the benefit of offering free
MP3s online.

Time Warner, Comcast Get Adelphia,
Comcast Celebrates By Turning Off DNS
04/08/2005 12:13 PMIt looks like Adelphia cable broadband customers who are about to get
shifted over to Comcast have plenty of outages to look forward to.
The same evening that it's announced that
Time Warner and Comcast will jointly devour what's left of
Adelphia for about $18 billion, Comcast
had major DNS
issues leaving many of their users offline. Of course, in
explaining the widespread outage, Comcast is using their favorite
phrase:
"scheduled
maintenance." That's the same thing they told me when Comcast
turned off my service nearly every weekday last October. I would call
every morning and be told that it was "scheduled maintenance."
However, when I asked what the schedule was and if I'd have service
the next day, I was told they had no idea. Apparently, it doesn't
become scheduled until it actually cut you off.
Comcast Outages Prevent Comcast From
Commenting On Comcast Outages
Comcast Outages Prevent Comcast From
Commenting On Comcast Outages
04/14/2005 01:21 PMLast week, we noted that Comcast was having widespread outage
problems, which they
chalk
ed up to "scheduled maintenance", even though no one was actually
informed of said schedule ahead of time. It turns out that schedule
is pretty crowded, because all week long, there have been
continued
reports of recurring outages all across the Comcast network.
Comcast, of course, continues to be pretty much silent on the issue,
leaving its increasingly fed up call center staff to deal with
incredibly angry customers who feel they're getting no information at
all. How hard is it to admit that they screwed up and they're working
on fixing the problem? Instead of chalking it up to bogus scheduled
maintenance or pretending there's nothing wrong, admit what the
problem is and give people real updates. People would still be
unhappy, but at least they'd feel like the company wasn't ignoring
them. Of course, maybe they can't do that because Comcast staffers
don't have any internet access either...
AT&T Broadband / Comcast or
AT&T Broadband / Comcast or
03/20/2003 05:32 PMAT&T Broadband / Comcast or "I'd Rather Eat Glass"
Damn. Last week Kasia
got screwed by AT&T / Comcast. Now its me. Here's what
happened:
- Come back from meeting with a client about a bunch of rather
interesting stuff. Some Inbox Buddy, some Feedster for internal use, some Frontier consulting and some
miscellaneous other open source issues.
- Virtually no network performance at all.> 200 ms ping times,
hosts not resolving, etc. Call AT&T.
- Suffer thru one of the worst voice response systems I've seen in a
long time. Horrid.
- Reach a technician. He makes me remove my PC from the
Linksys broadband router that shields my PC from the outside
world. I'm not happy about this but a 10 Base T coupler makes it
a lot easier.
- He tells me to restart. I counter with "ipconfig
/renew". He shuts up.
- I start doing some ping tests and he's telling me that all is well
and happy, frothy goodness since he can ping me fine.
- I start to traceroute and give him feedback about the broken
routes. I ask him: What's an email address so I can mail
it to you? "I don't have one". What's a hot mail account I
can send it to? "I can't give that to you either." So I
ended up reading him the bad routes. Pathetic. And this
from a company that sucks $50 from me monthly for broadband?
- I finally give him the info, he checks it from there after a 5
minute hold session and B I N G O ! I was *right*. They
have a problem on their internal network and then I had to wait on
hold for another 5 minutes while he filled out a trouble ticket.
Then I got the really bad news.
- "It'll be resolved within 72 hours. Not necessarily fixed
but hopefully a solution decided upon." What the fsck does that
mean ? That within 3 days from now, you'll decide how to fix it
and then take as long as you like? Utterly, totally
pathetic.
End result? Over an hour of my time shot to hell simply
because AT&T can't proactively monitor its own damn network.
I tell you, times like this? I'd rather eat glass than be an
AT&T customer.

Comcast Offers Home Network
Installation, Equipment Rental
Comcast Offers Home Network
Installation, Equipment Rental
05/05/2004 03:44 PMComcast will install Wi-Fi gear, configure a router, and rent it to
their customers with new program: Comcast Home Networking includes the
delivery and installation of Wi-Fi networking for a setup fee and $5
per month (covering the router and one PC Card). Setup costs $200 for
two computers up to $300 for five computers, the maximum covered by
this deal. A current discount program chops $100 off that price until
June 1. The terms and pricing don't explain the rental fee for the
second through fifth computers' hardware, referring to a "rate card"
that isn't on the Web site. The installation includes configuring and
setting a WEP encryption key for the network, a task which with
certain equipment can cause grown men and women to weep. There's
definitely a place for a service in which the equipment is covered
against defects. The site for the program doesn't note this, but
Comcast's overarching subscriber terms says, During the term of this
Agreement, Comcast will repair and maintain all Comcast Equipment and
you agree that the Comcast Equipment will not be serviced by anyone
other than Comcast employees or agents. Part of the press release
noted that this package, offered as $52.95 per month excluding the
rental fees and install fees, has up to 4 Mbps download speeds and 384
Kbps upload speeds. The basic package is $42.95 per month for 3 Mbps
down and 256Kbps up. These prices require a Comcast cable
subscription; it's $10 extra per month without such a subscription.
(Macintosh users need not apply.) Qwest DSL's comparable service is
$39.99/month for 1.5 Mbps down, 896 Kbps up (with Qwest phone
service). Qwest also offers a wireless option with less support and no
installation but without the rental cost: you just buy an Actiontec
device with 802.11g and DSL modem support built in....
