The sensationally sordid Staff Ass sex scandal. Young DC congressional staff assistant starts juicy blog. (edited cache). Blog describes carryings on with many men, including a married Bush appointee who pays her for sex. Washington's most amusing and best read new blogger, Wonkette, links to it, picking out choice quotes. Within hours, the blog is gone, the girl is fired. Now another blogger outs the girl's boss as a Republican Senator. Fun!

iMesh Convinced By RIAA To Give Up

iMesh Convinced By RIAA To Give Up 07/20/2004 09:38 PM
This one seems quite strange. Despite pretty clear rulings in other cases that would seem to apply to iMesh, the file sharing company has given in concerning a lawsuit from the RIAA, agreeing to pay $4.1 million and to change their business model to one that doesn't involve file sharing anymore. The company has already changed their name to Bridgemar Services, and Mitch Bainwol of the RIAA is already trumpeting how this bulldozing of a perfectly legal offering is somehow "more constructive" than companies like Streamcast and Grokster standing up for their legal rights to offer an application that has both infringing and non-infringing uses. It seems very strange that iMesh decided to give in, and since they give no info on this new business model, it remains to be seen if there's more to this story, or if the company is simply giving up altogether.

Independent dealers press on with
lawsuit against Apple
12/28/2004 05:39 PM
Independent Apple retailers could be assigned a trial date next month in their lawsuit filed against Apple Computer alleging unfair trade practices. Thomas Santos, president of MacAdams Computing, a San Francisco-based Apple retailer, said the trial date could be named as early as January 25, 2005, according to a report by CRN today. The lawsuit involves six independent retailers who claim Apple intentionally withheld adequate inventory from them in order to stock up Apple's own retail outlets and online store. The lawsuit also charges Apple with underpricing its retail partners, denying warranty claims made by certain retailers and poaching customers from retailers, said Santos.

Car Dealers Slowly Understanding What
The Internet Means

Car Dealers Slowly Understanding What
The Internet Means
06/11/2004 12:55 PM
Last time I bought a car, I went through Car Buying Tips in great detail and ended up getting a price well below invoice and significantly lower than what Edmund's called the "true market value" - which they claim is what you should pay. Best of all, the process went very quickly when dealing with the dealer (mostly via the internet) - because I was informed and didn't need to be bothered with various tricks. While I may not have brought in as much money directly from the car, I also didn't waste their time. It appears that more car dealers are beginning to recognize that the informed customer isn't always a bad customer. They're willing to pay a reasonable price and they don't need to be worked on for wasteful hours. What's most amusing about this article, though, is that there are now two types of dealers. The showroom dealers who like finding uninformed suckers and pushing the hard sell on them for hours at a time, and those who prefer to just get hot leads off the internet, sell more cars, and make more commissions (often based on number of vehicles sold - and not for how much).

Retirement Savings, Congressional Style

Retirement Savings, Congressional Style 05/24/2004 09:18 AM

  • Gretchen Morgenson (NY Times): A Great Fund (For Them, Not You). It's easy to see why the Washington political class feels no need to right the wrongs in the fund industry. Those folks know how to take care of themselves. Low-cost, conflict-free money management is just one of the many special privileges lawmakers have arranged for themselves. Too bad the 91 million ordinary Americans who invest in funds can't get the same deal. As Mr. Fitzgerald said: "We've created one mutual fund world for ourselves that is great and fair and we've created another for the rest of America that stinks."

Congressional Hearing Called on Fair Use; 321 Studios President Asked to Testify

Now Is the Time for Consumers to Effect Change Through www.protectfairuse.org

WASHINGTON, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- A Congressional Hearing for H.R. 107, the Digital Media Consumers' Rights Act (DMCRA), has been set for Wednesday, May 12, at 10:00 AM Eastern. The DMCRA has been acknowledged and endorsed by major industry players like Intel Corp., Philips Consumer Electronics, Sun Microsystems, Bell South, Verizon, SBC, Qwest, Gateway, and the Consumer Electronics Association, among others, as a necessary balancing mechanism to restore consumers' fair use rights in the digital era. The hearing will take place before the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection in Room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

The DMCRA, introduced by Reps. Rick Boucher (D-VA) and John Doolittle (R- CA) and co-sponsored by House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Joe Barton (R-TX), would re-affirm consumer fair use rights and balance the otherwise one-sided protection afforded copyright owners under current interpretations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

321 Studios Founder and President Robert Moore has been asked to testify at this historic fair use Congressional hearing. 321 Studios is the developer of the award-winning DVDXCOPY series of DVD backup software -- a product now banned in the United States after a group of Hollywood studios sued the company, and two federal judges decided that DVDXCOPY was in violation of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

I've been a big fan of Rick Boucher ever since I first met him in Tokyo and he helped me understand how the US Congress worked on Internet issues. He's been one of the few US politicians I've met who understands the Internet and the variety of important issues including the problems with the DMCA. This bill that he and John Doolittle have introduced is a REALLY important push against the DMCA and all the might of Hollywood will be resist the new bill. If the DMCRA is successful, it will be an important blow against the insanity of the DMCA which will reverberate all the way to Japan and the EU. Americans. Contact your representatives and rally around this important issue. Please.

Senator undecided over whether to fire aide for sex 'blog': There's a lot of debate in this article about on exactly what grounds this woman can be fired. How about gross lack of judgement? I'm not critiquing anyone's personal life except to say that a congressional aide lives in something of a fishbowl, and she really should have kept that in mind.

Sen. Mike DeWine said Thursday that he has not decided whether to fire an aide who allegedly posted her exploits in an Internet diary, including accepting $400 from a married man for sex.

"We're in the process of completing a review," the Ohio Republican said. "It's a personnel matter."
