Camera Phones Hit 3 Megapixels

"Japanese cellular carrier KDDI plans to begin selling in early June a cell phone with an embedded 3-megapixel resolution digital camera, it said Wednesday. The handset will be the first in the world at this resolution, according to the carrier.

The announcement came almost a year to the day since the first megapixel-class cell phones went on sale in Japan and around six months after the first 2-megapixel models hit shelves....

...Features include a 2.3-inch thin film transistor display with 240-by-320-pixel resolution, a 1.1-inch sub display, a USB cradle to allow for easy transfer of images and video files to a PC, a 12.8MB internal data folder and a slot for miniSD cards.

It measures 2 inches by 4 inches by 1 inch and weighs 4.5 ounces. KDDI, which offers service under the 'Au' brand name, hasn't announced the price of the phone. It's compatible with Japan's variant of the Code Division Multiple Access standard and won't go on sale overseas." [PCWorld]

It's somewhat vindicating to be ahead of the curve. Years ago, I started to do whatever I could to eliminate excess sugar from my diet. Now I'm learning that restaurants like PF Chang's and TGIF's are beginning to offer low-carb menus. Even The Cheesecake Factory is now using Splenda in their desserts! It was difficult to allow Jamba Juice into my life - but I'd never touch fruit otherwise....

The sun is out and the birds are singing and all my neighbors are roasting flesh on the communal patio, so I've been thinking about buying a BBQ. I think I just found it: the futuristic, portable Q:
Looking like a cross between the Starship Enterprise and a jet engine, the Q BBQ can be carried around like a briefcase, but opens up Transformer-style to become a stylish, stand-alone, gas-powered grill. Crafted in durable steel, the Q uses inexpensive little propane tanks that fit right inside the grill. You'll get hours of cooking time from just one tank! It also has dual gas controls with a full range of temperatures, so you can sear burgers on one side of the grill and gently toast buns on the other, just by adjusting the flame.

Just this morning, we were in the shower together, quoting Eddie Izzard to each other and laughing.

Now, a few measly hours later, my love is gone again, going back North, and the house seems so awfully empty. The sun is shining, it is warm outside, like a summer's day, and a lost fly flies frantically about in my apartment, desperately seeking something but only finding a place to die.

I still have packing to do, as I am leaving for Stuttgart in a couple of hours.

I wrote some code yesterday morning, as she was still sleeping, as I did not have the heart to wake her up.

I just miss her so terribly already.

"Sixteen Candles" Adds 20 More to the Cake

"Alas, convergent friends, we are aging. That seminal movie of the 1980s, "Sixteen Candles," is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. To honor the John Hughes classic, AMC is airing it at 8 tonight, followed by an episode of its behind-the-scenes series, "Backstory" in which they'll talk with stars Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall. Truly, for those of us in and around the high school class of 1986, this is as TiVo-worthy as it gets." [Lost Remote]

I happened to catch part of the movie tonight (wish I'd known about the special afterwords - damn my late reading of my aggregator!), and I laughed pretty hard when one of Farmer Ted's geek friends says, "I'll bet you a dozen floppy disks you don't even get a kiss." Which, of course, is followed up for a request for a video as proof, which Anthony Michael Hall rejects because it would get duped "like a hundred times" and show up everywhere. Ah, the days before P2P and the internet....

hangover torture devices

« Tippaleivät in the Eckberg window. »

The traditional Vappu tippaleipä cake is so hard and crunchy that I can only imagine it as a torture device for the hungover as the loud noise inside your head when eating them is truly painful. It makes me wonder if some old granny made them as a cruel way to get back at the drunks in the park. :) [ Well, if I am to believe what I read on the internet, the tradition here came from Germany to western Finland in the 1700s. They were first made in Helsinki in the 1830s at Kaisaniemi restaurant by Kajsa Wahllund (namesake of the park) and became a traditional treat only after the 1900s. They were known as "lonkeroleivistä" or tentacle cakes. :) Sadly, no mention of a vengeful granny. ] They are much like American funnel cakes (and we even have a Fu nnel Cake King) but the ones people buy from the stores are hard to the point of just assuming that they're stale as they don't really taste like much of anything. Like a bird's nest without the birds. They're also rather expensive since they're a traditional treat that everyone buys instead of making at home. I tested my homemade tippaleivät on a dinner party and everyone, especially the kids, seemed to love them, even those who said they really never liked the traditional crunchy ones.

I consulted my copy of Kotiruoka for a recipe and it had the absolutely brilliant idea of using a catsup or mustard bottle for pouring the batter into the hot oil. Both the funnel technique and the old plastic bag trick are a pain in the ass and make a huge mess. With the catsup bottle, you can make the batter, pour it into the bottle and store it in the refrigerator overnight if you don't want to make them right away. The soup ladle technique is also a great idea although I just used some egg forms I have for frying eggs or small pancakes that worked very well.

For frying, choose a deep metal pot with a lid that fits as it's safer to use with less hot oil splattering around the kitchen. Keep the lid handy in case of problems. The tongs and the oven mitts also minimize contact with the hot oil and the pan. Tongs are better at manipulating the cakes than a spoon or a fork, too. The temperature of the oil is important but it doesn't need to be exact. Sunflower oil has a high smoke point so just keep the oil hot and mind the burner setting to keep it from smoking. Be sure to remove any bits of cake left behind as they'll burn in the oil and start to smoke. The cakes take about a minute to fry and, once they're a nice and medium golden brown on both sides, use the tongs to lift the cake up from the oil, shake a bit of the oil from it and place it onto a cooling rack lined with paper towels to drain. Top with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar. Eat. :)

Tippaleivät or Finnish Funnel Cakes

Makes: about 24 cakes
Time: less than an hour
Special tools: catsup bottle, deep metal pot, tongs, round egg forms or large soup ladle with long handle
Source: Kotiruoka

  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 dl or 1 cup whole milk
  • 4 dl or 1.75 cups wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • about 500ml or 2 inches deep in the pot sunflower oil for frying
  • confectioners' sugar and/or cinnamon sugar for dusting
  1. Whisk eggs in a bowl with a fork. Add sugar, salt, milk and flour/baking powder mixture. Mix batter well until smooth.
  2. Pour batter into a strong plastic bag (double-layer) and close the bag. The batter is handily piped from a clean plastic catsup or mustard bottle. (brilliant idea)
  3. Heat the oil in a thick-bottomed iron pot to 180C/355F. Sink a round steel soup ladle into the hot oil so that it is half-full of oil. Cut a small corner from the plastic bag. Let the batter run in a thin ribbon into the ladle so that it slowly forms a lattice. Cook 2-3 tippaleipä at a time. Turn the cake when the bottom turns a golden brown.
  4. Lift the finished cakes onto a cooling rack lined with paper towels to drain. After they have drained, decorate with confectioners sugar and/or cinnamon sugar before serving. Serve with sima.

Yesterday I just stopped, in the shop, right next to the sausage section. I saw a beautiful woman, packing Carelian pastries in a paper bag, oblivious to my staring. I just couldn't help looking at her, and smile like an idiot.

She turned and came to me. Asked: "What are you laughing at?"

And I replied: "I was just looking at you. I think I'm still terribly in love with you."

I'm so happy I found her.

Oh, sweet London 12/30/2003 01:24 AM
This city is most certainly a place where it's impossible to get bored. Yesterday, after an early arrival, we went to see the Lord of the Rings exhibition at Science Museum, which was very well worth the rather steep 12£ admission: some of the miniatures are simply amazing, Sauron and the ringwraiths can scare you witless even if seen from a distance, but the best part are some of the paintings and sketches: I felt like any weak-minded creature in front of the Ring as I let my eyes rest upon the artwork of Sauron overseeing his troops at the plains of Gorgoroth... This must be mine - my precioussss...

Afterwards, we were - completely accidentally - treated to the artwork of Yann Arthus-Bertrand, who had an outdoor exhibition of 3x2 meter photographs outside the Natural History Museum. Go see the stuff this guy shoots - some of it is quite simply breathtaking. Especially in large size.

Anyhow, the tournament looks like it's going to be a good one: plenty of nice people all around, good location, relaxed schedule... Well, I might still lose all of my games :)

Unfortunately, I am not able to get GPRS roaming work, so it looks like no moblogging. I even forgot all of my USB leads home, so I can't even upload any pictures. Oh well.

SQL Server: The 64-bit Sweet Spot

SQL Server: The 64-bit Sweet Spot 06/28/2004 11:51 AM
Scalability Experts have recently published a great white paper (PDF) that compares SQL Server 2000 running on 32-bit and 64-bit architectures and benchmarks both versions against known loads. The whitepaper uses a Unisys ES7000 mainframe-class server using Itanium 2 processors. The most interesting results were using the 64-bit edition of Analysis Services, where they demonstrated far higher headroom in terms of number of members and partition processing. Some of the most severe limitations of the 32-bit edition will be eradicated when SQL Server 2005 arrives, due to the rearchitecture of much of the OLAP engine, but the enhanced throughput of a 64-bit environment will still have a major effect.
