Patenting
Punctuation (Ernest Miller)
Well, it seems that someone has patented some new forms of
punctuation: WIPO Patent Publication No. WO9219458:
Using two
new punctuation marks, the question comma and the exclamation comma:
and respectively, inquisitiveness and exclamation may be expressed
within a written sentence structure, so that thoughts may be more
easily and clearly conveyed to readers. The new punctuation marks are
for use within a written sentence between words as a comma, but with
more feeling or inquisitiveness.Seems that this is sort of an addition
to the faddish punctuation known as the Interrobang.via I/P Updates

Monsanto Wins Fight to Control
Plant The Canadian Supreme court sets international precedent by
ruling that since Monsanto holds a patent on a gene, it can control
the use of the plant.
So does this mean that in the future that an engineered human gene
could be patented, and therefore if you receive this gene you will
have to make royalty payments? And if you renege on paying can they
repo the gene?

The Sinclair Broadcast Group has joined the broadcasting Hall of
Cowardice with its craven decision to prevent its customers from
seeing tonight's Nightline broadcast, on which anchor Ted
Koppel will read the names and show pictures of the American service
men and women killed in the current Iraq War.
On Sinclair's home page today is a
statement about the company's reason for this move: a claim that the
Nightline show is a purely political act. Let's assume for a minute
that this is true, and that -- as the statement implies -- the motive
is to cast a bad light on the war -- even though Sinclair's statement
doesn't begin to make such a case. Does this mean Sinclair will start
blacking out the flagrantly pro-administration Fox News programming?
You will not be even slightly surprised to know that the various
Smiths who run this company are HUGE donors to George W. Bush and the
Republican Party, according to the always-valuable Open Secrets database of
political influence-peddling. See this and this, in
particular.

a commanding lead over Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych in Ukraine's
repeat presidential runoff election on Sunday. While Yanukovych
indicated he was resigned to losing, his campaign threatened to
challenge the validity of the vote in court, as Yushchenko's did after
