Cory Doctorow:
USAToday has hired Michael Moore to cover the Republican National
Convention:
Hanging out around the convention, I've encountered a number of the
Republican faithful who aren't delegates. They warm up to me when they
don't find horns or a tail. Talking to them, I discover they're like
many people who call themselves Republicans but aren't really
Republicans. At least not in the radical-right way that George W.
Bush, Dick Cheney, John Ashcroft and Co. have defined Republicans.
I asked one man who told me he was a "proud Republican," "Do you think
we need strong laws to protect our air and water?"
"Well, sure," he said. "Who doesn't?"
I asked whether women should have equal rights, including the same pay
as men.
"Absolutely," he replied.
"Would you discriminate against someone because he or she is gay?"
"Um, no." The pause — I get that a lot when I ask this question
— is usually because the average good-hearted person instantly
thinks about a gay family member or friend.

Even paranoids have
enemies... A Web site posing as nonpartisan that is funded by a
GOP PR outfit and a Senate candidate urges people to call theaters to
complain about their plans to show the Michael Moore film
"Farenheit 9/11" when it opens. Some theater owners report
death threats. The movie's
infamous trailer has already
been called one of the most effective anti-Bush campaign ads in
circulation. So who is behind the censorship effort?
Cosmic
Iguana, "the voice of the evildoers", has some
clues.
Why, it's
Howard Kaloogian,
one of the men behind the
Gray Davis
recall, who also ran a successful campaign to kill an
unfavorable CBS
biopic of His Holiness the Gipper. Small world.

Combine "guerrilla drive-ins" with the Barlow dance mobs
(last post). No, not on the street where folks can observe with the
naked eye, but away from the action, way away maybe, facilitated by
sneaky little cameraphones and/or videocams blogging the dancers to
the web. Imagine also Fahrenheit projected onto structures where
casual passers-by or people stuck in traffic will see and hear it.

Michael Moore rips Bush yet another one.
08/12/2004 05:09 PM
Michael Moore rips Bush yet another one. While
making Fahrenheit 9/11, Michael Moore interviewed Porter Goss,
President Bush's as-yet-to-be-approved nominee for head of the CIA. In
the interview, Porter Goss said he wasn't qualified to even be in the
CIA anymore, much less run it.
"It is true I was a case officer, clandestine services
officer, and yes, I do understand the core mission of the business.
But I couldn't get a job with the CIA today. I am not qualified. I
don't have the language skills. You know my language skills were
romance languages and stuff. We're looking for Arabists today. I don't
have the cultural background probably, and I certainly don't have the
technical skills, as my children remind me every day. "Daddy,
Daddy, you gotta get better on your computer." And so the things
you need to have, I don't have."

Hates America is a new documentary looking to discredit filmmaker
Michael Moore. Moore's new
film,
Fahrenheit 9/11
is causing quite a stir at the Cannes Film Festival, where it has been
met with
rave reviews, and
standing ovations lasting upwards of 20 minutes. With Moore's
recent
distribution
problems with the film,
a new project
seeks to challenge Moore to distribute his film for free via the
internet to prove that "the message is more important than the
money," and to silence his critics, who contend that with the
immense profits his controversial film is sure to garner, he is a
"war profiteer" just like Halliburton.

Michael Moore: pirate my film, please
Michael Moore: pirate my film, please
07/04/2004 12:27 PMDocumentary filmmaker Michael Moore has recently gone on record
stating that downloading and watching his films was fine as long as
people didn't try to make money off them. In a way, it's a classic
struggle between a filmmaker creating works he wants the world to see,
while the studio that produced it would rather everyone pay to see it
instead of downloading. Other directors have backed up his position
and the current distributor is allowing the downloading to take
place.
Here are Moore's full quotes on the subject of 9/11 downloads:
I don’t agree with the copyright laws and I don’t have
a problem with people downloading the movie and sharing it with people
as long as they’re not trying to make a profit off my labour. I
would oppose that. I do well enough already and I made this film
because I want the world, to change. The more people who see it the
better, so I’m happy this is happening. Is it wrong for someone
who’s bought a film on DVD to let a friend watch it for free? Of
course it’s not. It never has been and never will be. I think
information, art and ideas should be shared.
Is this guy a movie director or one of our board members?
The increased exposure to his films, protection from commercial
exploits, and general disagreement with current copyright sounds a lot
like the reasons why Creative Commons was formed and why we have our
licenses in the first place. Perhaps the next Moore film will be
licensed, making the downloading legal from the start.
Michael Moore calls you stupid
Michael Moore calls you stupid
06/27/2004 02:40 PM
Michael Moore calls you stupid - if
you are an American. Well, not so much stupid, but uneducated and in
need of a smarter man than you are to guide your poor brain. Which,
of course, should be him.
And this isn't the first time. Apparently, you and
I, as Americans, are stupid and uneducated (our international MeFites,
please feel free to feel smug and superior). Also, Saddam Hussein was
only a bad guy when he was funded by Americans, according to the first
interview. This may be why, on the weekend of the release of
Farenheit 911,
Americans are flocking to see it in record
numbers. (bit of a followup to
Rastafari's post ,
since the numbers have moved past Drudge and into the
"mainstream") A fascinating cultural moment, to be sure.
Love him or
hate him,
Michael Moore (and
Howard Stern) may change the political face of America while
insulting your intelligence at the same time.

Michael Moore says his announcement is
no publicity stunt
05/09/2004 01:36 AMI've lost track of the number of people who've sent us links to news
stories about Michael Moore "admitting" that his campaign to tell
people about Disney's last-minute refusal to carry his new anti-Bush
movie, Farenheit 911, is a "publicity stunt." Moore convincingly
rebuts this on his site
"Michael Moore has known for a year that we will not distribute this
movie, so this is not news." Yes, that is what I thought, too, except
Disney kept sending us all that money to make the movie. Miramax said
there was no problem. I got the idea that everything was fine.
"It is not in the best interests of our company to distribute a
partisan political film that may offend some of our customers." Hmmm.
Disney doesn't distribute work that has partisan politics? Disney
distributes and syndicates the Sean Hannity radio show every day? I
get to listen to Rush Limbaugh every day on Disney-owned WABC. I also
seem to remember that Disney distributed a very partisan political
movie during a Congressional election year, 1998—a film called

07/30/2004 10:06 AMDude,
You (and your company) got where it is via innovation, chutzpah and
lots of luck.
You were the first to fiure out the balance between meatspace and
cyberspace in regards to content-on-demand.
Congrats!
But now I hear that you're doing a me-to movie download play and
I'm sorry - that's just not enough!
You REALLY need to think seriously about what value added you can
offer that will differentiate your downloading service from the rest
and how your brand and customer base can be best leveraged.
And being a me-too copycat ain't that.
You collaborative filtering sucks and we (your loyal customers)
have been eagerly awaiting the time when you get a clue about that.
Wal-mart and Blockbuster are gonna kick your ass - unless you stay
out ahead of the curve.
Here's a hint: THINK PEOPLE!
Rafa
t Ali reports.....
An interview with Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, on VOD,
online delivery and others issues.
On online delivery: "We're focused on downloading to your TV, over
the Internet, and that's about all we've said to date. The big
advantage we have is that mixing it with DVD, customers can get
unlimited DVDs and unlimited downloads under one subscription."

Although it took them three writers to do it,
Newsweek takes a look at the smartphone trend, trying to pose the
seemingly deep question "Will Phones Replace PCs?" while blissfully
ignoring the fact that the only possible answer is, you know, 'maybe.'
That's some thought-provocation right there. Still, there's some good
stuff in the article, like a stop-smoking program that sends
encouraging messages to Japanese students, and (hypothetical?)
examples of two single people hooking up in a bar using Symbian
Dater.
Which reminds me, I've been meaning to ask if any of you have been

mean, 'hooking your interface meats up to anonymous or recently met
