marketing automation efforts in the CRM realm -- often disappear into
the black hole of Internet service providers' anti-spam filters. Even
those that a customer actively has requested can miss the mark due to
filtering.

New comment spam technique
New comment spam technique
07/30/2004 01:38 AMThe arms race against comment spammers has been stepped up a notch.
I received a flurry of spam that linked to entries on other blogs.
Curious to see what that was all about, I clicked on one of the links,
fully expecting to be redirected to porn or an online casino. I was
surprised to see a discussion of patent law; this comment spam linked
to a legitimate site.
The comment that I received was certainly spam — other than
the odd link, it was the typical formula: the name was “online
casinos,” fake generic email address, and a vapid comment.
Certainly a Stanford law professor hadn’t actually sent the
spam. There was another reason this spammer was promoting someone
else’s blog entry. The blog entry in question was full of comment
spam. In the last 3 months, this entry had accumulated thousands of
spam links in the comments.
It appears the spammers have a new tactic in increasing their
PageRank. They find a site that doesn’t delete comment spam and
fill it with links. Then they boost the PR of that site by
spamming it in blog comments. Once the spam-friendly’s site has
in increased Google ranking, all those spammed links in their comments
will get a boost in rank as well.
It’s rather clever, actually.
I’m leaving out a link to the spam-ridden blog entry on
purpose. I don’t want to give the spammers the link they want.
If you want to see the page in question, find Elizabeth Rader’s
March 1, 2004 entry called “All rights reserved in Birth Control
for Flatworms” on cyberlaw.stanford.edu.
If you are a site that is apathetic toward link spam, it is now
time to choose a side. If you continue your apathy and allow comment
spam links to linger on your site you are helping the spammers. Spam
friendly sites will now be placed on the list of blacklisted domains
that are not allowed to post comments on this site.
In the war on spam if you are not for us; if you choose to look the
other way and allow spammers to use your site; if you feel that
keeping your site free from spam is too much trouble — you are
against us.

DNA Sequencing Technique Fights Spam
Email
08/22/2004 03:16 PMWhat's impressive is that an algorithm named Chung-Kwei (after a
feng-shui talisman that protects the home against evil spirits) can
catch nearly 97 per cent of spam. What's even more surprising is it
wasn't developed for fighting unsolicited email -- it was created to
analyze DNA and amino acid sequences for recurring patterns, which
often indicate genetic structures that have an important role.
Chung-Kwei is based on the Teiresias algorithm, developed by the
bioinformatics research group at IBM's Thomas J Watson Research Center
in New York, US. Instead of chains of characters representing DNA
sequences, the research group fed the algorithm 65,000 examples of
known spam. Each email was treated as a long, DNA-like chain of
characters. Teiresias identified six million recurring patterns in
this collection, such as "Viagra".
IBM intends to include Chung-Kwei in its commercial product, SpamGuru.
Justin Mason, who developed SpamAssassin, one of the most popular
open-source anti-spam filters, says that Chung-Kwei looks
promising.
"I think there is still a lot of work to be done. But what is
exciting is not the particular algorithm, but the fact that IBM has
shown there is the entire field of bioinformatics techniques to
explore in the fight against spam."

Anti-Spam Legislation Makes Spam More
Malicious
04/29/2004 01:28 PMAren't unintended consequences wonderful? Now that anti-spam
legislation is becoming popular, one result is that spammers aren't
wasting time with just spamming mortgage offers and ways to buy
Viagra. Instead, now that they realize they're definitely on illegal
ground, they're
moving more towards malicious attack spam, including phishing
attacks and trojan horse attacks. In other words, if they're going to
break the law with spam, they figure they might as well go all out.

Report from the spam/anti-spam summit
04/09/2004 04:05 PMDanny O'Brien has written up one of the first summits between spammers
and spam-fighters for the Guardian. It's a great piece.
Surprisingly, no such shootings occur. It's oddly intimate, watching
the spammers and the anti-spammers mill around each other like this.
It feels like a temporary ceasefire in a vicious war that to most of
us seems to be a stalemate...
Over the past year, though, a series of meetings arranged by a trusted
figure in the American anti-spam community, Anne Mitchell, have been
slowly bringing the two sides together. These mini-conferences, held
under the banner of the Institute for Spam and Internet Public Policy,
have mostly been between the highest-ranking ISPs - MSN, AOL - and
commercial email marketers of the most squeaky clean kind. Initially
in secret, these days the meetings are more public.
