I had a note from a reader last week with a question that hadn’t occurred to me. Daniel Blake asked: “Will Novell's Linux servers be able to run NLM's?  We have a great deal of money invested in software that runs on NetWare that we can't just throw away and start over again.” (Read on, Daniel, I gave you misinformation.)

Last issue I brought up the various packages that Novell will be offering to entice you to buy its products. In particular, the marketing plan seems to be to offer a combination of an operating system with add-on applications and services appropriate to a certain industry niche. Open Enterprise Server is just one of those packages, along with SuSE Enterprise Linux Server, SuSE Linux Professional, Novell Linux Small Business Suite, and at the top end the "Validated Configuration Program for the Data Center." The next version of GroupWise will also ship with a free copy of SLES "in the box."

SALT LAKE CITY -- There have been so many announcements, so much activity, such a hurried pace to the Brainshare 2005 conference that I think many may have overlooked the big story. It was thrown out in an almost offhand manner during Novell CEO Jack Messman's keynote address on Monday: Longtime Microsoft partner Novell is migrating all of its own 6,000 Windows desktops to Linux.

When Lycoris released a new version of its popular Linux operating system, Desktop/LX 1.4, this week, it also debuted a new application integration infrastructure, nicknamed AI2 (A-I-squared). The company claims that AI2 "bridges the gap" between commercial Linux applications and the Linux desktop. Already, one major Linux application vendor, NeTraverse, has had its flagship desktop product, Win4Lin Workstation, integrated with Lycoris' Desktop/LX operating system using the AI2 system. But is AI2 really as revolutionary as Lycoris claims? Even if it is, does it matter?

Spotted on Slashdot, IBM's Open Source Desktop - Directions for today... and Tomorrow presentation includes one slide that really caught my attention:

To continue our own journey to becoming an on demand business, IBM expects to migrate our internal desktop environment, where appropriate, to open standards based on the Linux platform.

Of course, depending on how they define "appropriate" this could be a lot less exciting than it looks. Still, it's a pretty huge boost for the Linux desktop movement.
