EA Sports is showing off screenshots of 'Madden: Next Gen,'
the working name for the version of Madden for a "next generation"
console. We have it on good word (and really, it's sort of obvious,
timing-wise) that it's a live render of a shot on the Xbox 360. ESPN
will be running a 30 second clip of the game during the NFL draft
coverage on April 23rd.
One thing is already certain about this upcoming console war:
Microsoft is making a lot more noise than anybody else. (Thanks,
Lumpia!)

Tiger Mail screenshot and user interface
Tiger Mail screenshot and user interface
03/30/2005 05:35 PMI find the
screenshot of Mail
for OS X 10.4 fascinating.
The first thing I notice is that the mailboxes aren’t in a
drawer anymore, which I think is a good thing.
A few other things:
1. The toolbar background appears to be some sort of gradient. As in a
metal window, there is no line between the top of the window and the
toolbar buttons. But it’s not metal. It looks new. (The
screenshot of
system preferences has the same look.)
2. The toolbar icons appear to be embedded in some kind of new button.
Whether it’s a new button style or just a look for the Mail
toolbar icons I can’t tell from the screenshot.
3. The mailbox list has a background color. This may or may not be
customizable—you can’t tell from the screenshot.
It’s a good guess that, if customizable, the color shown is the
default color. This is interesting because I can’t think of any
other source lists from Apple that have colored backgrounds by
default.
4. The vertical splitview dividing the mailboxes from the rest of the
window is not a standard splitview. (Unless it’s new in OS X
10.4.) (Actually, I’m just assuming it’s a splitview.)
Note how the apparent thickness of the divider is zero. The horizontal
splitview looks more like a standard splitview—though I’ve
squinted at it a bit and started to wonder if that’s true.
5. I don’t see a status bar. (It could be that, like Safari, the
status bar is hidden by default. Or it could be that it was added
after this screenshot was taken. Or maybe there just isn’t one.
I don’t know.)
So... what do you think?
(Note: remember to respect any and all non-disclosure agreements.
We’re just looking at public screenshots. And these screenshots
may or may not resemble the final, shipping versions.)

Critical Update for Windows Media Player
(All Versions) for Windows 2000, Windows

02/11/2004 01:19 AMWhen a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add
script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script
commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back,
the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program,
or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This
behavior is by design

04/22/2004 01:20 AMAfter applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands
(KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they
would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command
issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would

NTSC-J, PAL, and SECAM TV Tuner Hotfix
for DirectX 9.0b on Windows 2000,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003
(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PMDirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security
issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security
fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused
several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats
other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly
on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include
loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain
device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge
Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw.
11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow
patching of all language installations supported by the affected
Operating Systems.

05/31/2004 02:00 PMActual Tools announced today the release of version 2.6 of Actual
Windows Manager, a revolutionary windows enhancement application for
Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP. The program dramatically expands Windows
functionality and introduces a new window control system, more native
to human perception. Actual Tools team of software developers and
cognitive analysts tried to bring to life the alternative desktop
organization and control concept with the ultimate goal of creating a
truly anthropocentric computer environment. [PRWEB May 26, 2004]

05/04/2004 10:23 PMJohn Allsopp: Message To The Messengers - Props to the old school:
Of late, with the latest version of Style Master released,
bedded down, and well received, I've been a little nostalgic about the
old days of CSS. So I thought I might try to ride that wave a little,
cast my mind back over my experience of CSS, and talk a little about
some people you really should be grateful to if you work with CSS and
web standards. Particularly some you might not have heard
of.
There follows a tribute to some of the unsung heroes of the early
history of CSS. And
if that's piqued your interest, Lauren Wood's recent post about DOM
Level 3 becoming a W3C Recommendation has some insights in to the
early days of the DOM
Working Group, which she chaired up until November 2001.

PHP History
PHP History
05/27/2004 03:13 PMPHP programming
language: Some interesting history on PHP. It used to be a Perl
wrapper?
PHP was originally designed as a wrapper around Perl by Rasmus
Lerdorf in 1994 to display his resume information and collect some
data, such as how many hits it was generating. Others first used
"Personal Home Page Tools" in 1995, which Lerdorf had combined with
his own Form Interpreter to create PHP/FI.
Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, two Israeli developers of the
Technion - Israel Institute of Technology rewrote the parser in 1997,
forming the basis of PHP 3. They also changed the name to its current
recursive form. After months in beta, the development team officially
released PHP/FI 2 in November 1997.

The history of bacon
The history of bacon
03/17/2005 02:53 AMScience.Ars rocks on for another week. This edition looks at some
medical problems in the developing world. For a long time, it was
commonly assumed that cancer rates were lower in poorer countries than
in the developed world. A new study shows that as life expectancy
increases in developing nations, so do cancer rates.
Where you live and what you eat have a large influence
on the types of cancer you are at risk from. Richer countries have
more breast, colon, rectum and prostate cancer, whereas poorer
countries have a greater incidence of cancers of the liver, stomach,
and esophagus.
There's also news on the history of bacon and a loss of meltwater.
Read on.
