Stickers on our PowerBooks 09/07/2004 10:27 AM

As usual, there were a lot of PowerBooks at this conference. Interestingly, Esther Dyson, Lawrence Lessig, Bruce Sterling and I were the only people I noticed who had stickers on our PowerBooks. Other people who I know who have stickers on their PowerBooks are Mena Trott and Cory Doctorow. I wonder what this means? What do those of us who are willing to vandalize our pristine PowerBooks with stickers have in common?

Anyway, just an observation...

Apple Update PowerBooks

Apple Update PowerBooks 02/01/2005 09:40 PM
Apple today announced a variety of updates across their popular line of PowerBook laptops. Key new features include faster G4 chips (1.67GHz), more memory (512MB) as standard, and better connectivity via AirPort 802.11g and Bluetooth 2.0. The new PowerBooks also feature scrolling 'TrackPad' technology and Apple's much hyped Sudden Motion Sensor.

“Apple continues to lead the industry with the most innovative notebooks,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “With new features like the scrolling TrackPad and Sudden Motion Sensor, the new PowerBooks are the ultimate combination of performance and portability.”

Read more for the updated specs on the PowerBook; the new PowerBooks will be available for purchase online later this week. <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/27/apple_site_powerboo k_g5/">Speculation </a>last week was rife that the company would be imminently announcing a G5 version of the PowerBook; the rumours were triggered when a placeholder on the Apple website with the text "apple_g5_powerbook". Clearly, this update dismisses these rumours and suggests that a G5 PowerBook is still a few months off. Apple VP Tim Cook has apparently described the task of getting the G5 chip inside a laptop as "the mother of all thermal challenges". In other Apple news, Apple was nominated "<a href="http://www.brandchannel.com/start1.asp?fa_id=248">t op brand</a>" of 2004, bumping previous winner Google off the top spot.

Will Apple own up to manufacturing
problems with 15" Powerbooks?

Will Apple own up to manufacturing
problems with 15" Powerbooks?
05/03/2004 01:38 PM
There's an enormous thread of PowerBook G4 15" owners on Apple's discussion boards, going into detail on the "white spots" and "uneven illumination" problem with this model. I bought mine last fall, and had to return it twice (first one was DOA, the second had the white-spots so bad that strangers on airplanes would come up to me and say, "Jesus Christ, what the hell is wrong with your screen?"). Now I'm on my third unit, and it's got the same problem: screen at about 50 percent brightness, big white splotch in the middle of the it.

It's still under warranty, but that doesn't do me any good: There's no way I can part with my machine for 3-7 days while Apple fixes it. Normally, I own two PowerBooks, the current one and a slightly older one (so that I have a working unit during repairs), but when I moved to Europe, I divested myself of all but a single CPU, so now I'm pretty scr0d.

The scoop appears to be that Apple is replacing these lemons with the new 1.5GHz models (which may or may not have the same problem), but I doubt that they'll ship me the replacement, let me transfer my data and then send back the old 'un. I'm just going to have to work off the world's shittiest display until I can scrape up the dough to buy another machine. Bummer.

Recently it has worsened to the point where I took it in today to the Apple store in Old Orchard. The attending Genius immediately noticed the uneven illumination of my display and suggested that it be sent in to the depot for repair. He also mentioned that this was the first time he had ever seen or heard of this problem before, and that there are no reports in the knowledge base that described this issue. When I mentioned to him that he might take a look at this thread in the Apple Support discussions, he wanted no part of it. He said that he rarely reads these forums, and dismissed it as "Oh well, people posting to discussion groups are mostly complainers" (those were not his exact words, but it was implied). Then I told him that people are posting actual photos of this problem and that all of the symptoms look identical for each person, which could indicate a manufacturing defect. His response was that "for those people, I suppose perception is reality".

Dell Releases Its Lightest Laptop Ever 03/31/2005 12:35 PM
Dell updated its lineup of business notebooks today with a 2.5-pound laptop designed for executives who want to make last-minute changes to presentations while airborne. The Latitude X1 was designed with business travelers in mind, from its reinforced casing (which wards off shifting airline baggage in the overhead compartment) to a sealed keyboard that limits the damage caused by coffee spills. Dell reduced the size of this model's power adapter and battery to reduce the system weight to 2.5 pounds, making this system the lightest laptop in the company's arsenal.

Conspiracy theory of the day: Dell
Laptop with built-in keylogger color="red">(Update: HOAX)

Conspiracy theory of the day: Dell
Laptop with built-in keylogger color="red">(Update: HOAX)
06/17/2005 03:34 PM
Mark Frauenfelder:

Reader comment: Marc Hedlund presents the best argument for this thing being a hoax: "A search for the name of the FOIA officer in the letter turns up this letter, which uses the same logo and the same address as the one in the 'keylogger' story. Note also that the 'file number' is the *same* on the two letters. It looks to me like the keylogger poster just overlaid new text in the body of the letter." Link

I'm not sure what to make of this, really. This website has a report by an anonymous person who says he bought a new Dell laptop and discovered what he claims is a "keyboard logger" -- a chip that stores keystrokes. He says he called Dell's tech support and asked them about it:

"they said, and I quote, 'The intregrated service tag identifier is there for assisting customers in the event of lost or misplaced personal information.' He then hung up."
He then call the police, who told him to call the Department of Homeland Security:
"they told me to submit a Freedom of Information Act request. This is what I got:" (Click on thumbnails for enlargement)
 Wtf Lol Files Homelandletter
Is this a hoax? The page seems to be the only accessible page on the site (www.chromance.de), which has a German top level domain. Link (Thanks, Rev!)

Update: Phil Torrone says: "I did an investi-MAKE-ion. I think the keylogger thing is a hoax. the images from the site are from here. The memo/letter thing of course looks fakey too.

"I think this is far scarier." (This points to an article that says the U.S. Department of Justice is looking into making ISPs store "records of e-mail, browsing or chat-room activity months after ISPs ordinarily would have deleted the logs -- if they were ever kept in the first place.")

Reader comment: Tian says: "The letter accompanied with the story about Dell laptop's keylogger is fake as well. If you do a search for dept. of homeland security's logo, it is a blue colour circular logo with an eagle in it. The one on the fake letter is a five-pointed star, which is commonly used for Sheriff's office." Link
