When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

Microsoft Announces Windows Media
Connect Technology, Enabling Seamless
Media Transfer Between Windows XP-Based
PCs and Consumer Electronics Devices
01/08/2004 07:36 PM
Today at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow (formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

(KB825116)

DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

Media Player-less Windows 03/28/2005 03:55 PM

In my opinion, forcing Microsoft to ship media player-less Windows won't have any effect on Microsoft's media format dominance.  Instead, Microsoft should have been forced to place media player IP and code in the public domain as well as bundle several competitive media players.  Of course, the monopolist side of me still think anti-monopoly whiners are just wimps but I'll change my tune when I have a lucrative reason to.

Microsoft Windows Media Player 10

Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 09/03/2004 08:18 AM
The most striking change to Microsoft Windows Media Player 10, the much-awaited upgrade to the player/jukebox that ships on most new PCs, is its dramatic cosmetic overhaul. Windows Media Player (WMP) no longer feels like a freebie utility thrown in with the OS (think Notepad), but is an application you'll actually want to use. By giving you easy access to all of your multimedia files (music, photos, and video) and helping you accomplish the tasks you're likely to want to do with them, WMP 10 at least equals — and in our estimation surpasses — the current leader in the field, MusicMatch Jukebox 9.

Removing Windows Media Player

Removing Windows Media Player 07/02/2004 01:22 AM
Microsoft apparently requires “greater clarification” on which specific files need to be removed so that it can comply with the EU’s court ruling. Microsoft has been ordered to remove it’s Media Player from Windows immediately, but apparently this has caused some confusion. Now if someone asks me to remove a program from my computer, I know that I am competent enough to understand what “files need to removed”. I believe this is just another Microsoft stall tactic and should be looked upon as such.

Did you know that Windows Media Player won't let you screen cap? I tried it today — with a high-definition AVI playing, I screen-capped the window. However, when I pasted it into Irfanview there was nothing but black where the image was supposed to be. I tried screen-capping the entire desktop — same problem.

Windows Media Player 10 Technical Beta
Released

Windows Media Player 10 Technical Beta
Released
06/02/2004 12:06 PM
Neowin got the news earlier of Media Player 10 beta coming out today, we've got the first news of the download site:

Today Microsoft is making available the technical beta of our next generation media player -- Windows Media Player 10 for Windows XP users.  This technical beta is being released to provide enthusiasts and early adopters of digital media technology the opportunity to test the release and give us critical feedback to help us ensure a high-quality release of the media player, which will ship later this year.  It is important to note that the player is still under development and at this stage is not intended for mass consumer adoption.

This test release of our popular all-in-one player builds on the design accomplishments and feature set of the Windows Media Player 9 Series, with the goal of providing the best experience for discovering, playing and taking digital media anywhere.  To this end, the technical beta of Windows Media Player 10 includes the following new and improved features:

  • Sleek new design. Windows Media Player 10 technical beta sports a simple, clean user interface that has a fresh new “look and feel” and enables fast access to top Player tasks. The most important Player features are now also available directly in the media library, enabling users to accomplish key digital media tasks all in one convenient place, while browsing the library.
  • Choice of online stores. Available from directly within the Player, we are testing a new concept currently called the “Digital Media Mall” that offers a selection of online music stores and video services that work seamlessly in the Player.
  • Enhanced device support.  Our goal with the Windows Media Player 10 will ultimately be to continue to provide support for the broadest range of digital music devices.  This test release introduces a number of new capabilities:
  • Support for a new feature called Auto Sync that enables the seamless and automatic synchronization of music, video, photos --and even recorded television-- to supported portable devices.
  • Support for subscription-based content via next-generation Windows Media Digital Rights Management (code named “Janus”).  New devices will be coming that support this new DRM that enable a “fill-it-up” model for subscription-based content.
  • Full support for the soon-to-be-released, Portable Media Center (PMC).  With Windows Media Player 10, all the digital media data types that are supported on the PMC can be automatically synched to that device via Auto Sync, including entire music libraries, photos, music videos, Photo Stories & home videos, recorded television, Movie Maker files. And any content purchased from online stores and services in the Digital Media Mall.
  •  All-in-one Smart Jukebox features.  Windows Media Player 10 technical beta builds on the all of the powerful features in Windows Media Player 9 Series delivering fast and flexible playback, unmatched audio and video quality, and many other “smart jukebox” features.
  • The Player is a key component of the new foundation Microsoft is building to enable the best end-to-end consumer experience to discover, play, and transport digital media easily around the home or on the go.  The Windows Media Player 10 technical beta does not yet include all features to be available at final release. The final, fully featured version of Windows Media Player 10 will be available later this year.
