billing tool
07/20/2004 12:54 PM
Small Town Software announced on Tuesday the release of Time and Budgets, a new application that integrates with Apple's iCal application to supply time and budgeting functions for projects. The software also works with any calendar program that supports WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning), which means .Mac subscribers can use iCal with the online service to seamlessly input data and generate reports that convert time into dollars and cents that can be compared against a project's budget. Available reports in Time and Budgets include time sheets with visual charts, details about time logged in specific phases and tasks, aggregate workgroup feedback and more. Another option can generate e-mail alerts when projects have reached certain financial goals.

OQO Hands-On Video

OQO Hands-On Video 06/01/2004 10:29 AM

oqo_video.jpg imageZDNet has a video interview with OQO CTO Jonathan Betts-LaCroix with lots of hands on time with the OQO handheld PC, the little sliding-face 1GHz brick with the integrated keyboard that OQO plans to ship in the fall (although ZDNet is saying July). There's no doubting its gadget appeal, but will consumers pay upwards of two grand for a PDA-replacement PC ("that doesn't run the PalmOS or the Pocket PC" or that there Leenucks, neither) when PDA sales in general have been falling? Hard to say, but if nothing else we'll have a highly-hackable PC with lots of ports (USB and Firewire, among others) and wireless to play with for the next few years.

Show Me Your Hands? No?

Show Me Your Hands? No? 07/26/2004 03:36 AM
One has to be aware of the make-up of the audience present, but this story is probably one that will be circulate far and wide among the techies this week...
Danese Cooper: The presenter... [from Microsoft] looked up into the audience and said "Show of hands... How many of you use Internet Explorer?" Probably 99 times out of 100 when he asks that question allt he hands go up, right? Well, first there was a pause and then a giggle and then a whoop of laughter as the audience looked around and realized that no one had raised a hand.
The presenter was thrown off his mark, but he recovered and ask, "Wow! Okay how many of you wish we'd fix IE so you could use it?" Still no hands...

More Hands-On With the iRiver PMC-100 09/02/2004 08:03 AM

iriver_pmc_ak5.jpg imageSorobanGeeks got their hands on the iRiver PMC-100 series, the Microsoft Portable Media Center player that's expected any day now in stores. They also had a short sit down with the Vice President of iRiver's parent company, who seems to have a real hard on for Microsoft in the upcoming portable player wars, because the "PMC OS will work in total harmony with the future operating systems of Microsoft." I suppose that's true in a sense, but I still think that until someone can provide plug-and-play functionality, be it Big M or someone else, none of these players are going to be widely adopted. They're just too big of a pain to use.

You know who should make a portable media player? TiVo.
