Toshiba Develops Detachable Display

Toshiba Develops Detachable Display 03/14/2005 06:02 PM

toshiba_detachable.jpgToshiba takes a card from the Transformers deck, developing a laptop with a detachable display that allows you to convert your laptop into a tablet at a moment's notice. They've already developed a prototype stylus-operated display that can be detached which they've been showing off at CeBIT. Said prototype is a 12.1 inch XGA that communicates with the notebook "base station" using 802.11b. A big issue appears to be battery life, as each half needs its own power supply. That and the unit's relative size are keeping it from being brought to market for now. I guess I'm having trouble understanding what benefits this setup offers over a high-performance tablet with a wireless keyboard, but that's just me. Computerworld has the whole scoop, including an interview with one of Toshiba's research scientists.

hitachi_OTFT.gif imageHitachi today announced that they have successfully developed the world's highest resolution organic TFT (Thin Film Transistor) display. 80 x 80 dots in 1.4 inches isn't exactly what I think of when I hear "high resolution," but according to Hitachi, this is the highest thus far for a display of this size. Perhaps the biggest advantage of organic TFTs, like gymnasts or the tax code, is their flexibility. Electronic paper enthusiasts or owners of cellular phones should be excited about today's development, because a bendable display could mean a lot for portability.

Apple on Monday introduced a new 30-inch Apple Cinema HD display, a new flat panel screen that features 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution. Apple also introduced new 23-inch and 20-inch displays to replace their existing flat panel monitors. The new displays all have the by-now familiar widescreen aspect ratio found across almost all of Apple's pro hardware line, and sport dual FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 ports, and use DVI to connect to video cards instead of Apple's vaunted ADC interface -- making the new monitors compatible out-of-the-box with Power Macs, PowerBooks, and PC-compatible computers as well.
