Immortaliz 3D Glass Portraits

Immortaliz 3D Glass Portraits 05/18/2004 01:21 PM

Not quite a hologram, but not quite rubbish, either, a British service called 'Immortaliz' overcomes their hideous name to provide 3Dish portraits 'carved' by lasers into blocks of glass. While they couch what seems like a pretty interesting process in a bunch of "Time Matrix" and "encounters with ancestors" hyperbole,...

Portraits in carbonite brick

Portraits in carbonite brick 01/19/2004 01:55 PM
Online gallery of super-geeky sculpture, from artist Nathan Sawaya :
I decided to make Han Solo frozen in carbonite. Life size. It took about 10,000 bricks, almost all dark gray, and about three months of on and off building. I built the sculpture so it can break down easily into smaller parts, thus making it mobile. Because, like most people, I like to take large sculptures of people frozen in carbonite with me whenever I travel.

XXX: 30 P9RN STAR PORTRAITS (a bit NSFW, obviously) by photographer Timothy Greenfiel d-Sanders, is a book that features paired portraits (one clothed and one nude) of the top stars in p6rn, straight and gay, from legends like (best-selling mem oirist) Jenna Jameson, Ron Jeremy and Nina Hartley to (ahem) rising stars like Sunrise Adams, Belladonna, Chad Hunt. The bo ok includes short essays on the intersection of p6rnography and culture by a wide range of writers, from Salman Rushdie to AM Homes. XXX is, essentially, about the much-dreaded "p6rnif ication" of the culture at large, rec ently featured in the New York Times. As Gore Vidal writes in the book's introduction, “Doubtless, sex tales were told about the Neanderthal campfire and perhaps instructive positions drawn on cave walls. Meanwhile, the human race was busy establishing such exciting institutions as slavery and its first cousin, marriage.” (more inside, with totally NSFW Terry Richardson)

Project Looking Glass

Project Looking Glass 06/29/2004 05:19 PM

lookingglass.jpgSun Microsystems is releasing an early version of their Project Looking Glass desktop environment into the GPL.

What if windows were translucent so that you could see the multiple windows you're working on at the same time? What if you could tack a note to yourself right on the Web page you're viewing? What if your CD or movie database became a 3D jukebox, where titles were joined with images to make finding what you want easier than ever? [...]

Sun Microsystems' latest innovations by its Advanced Software Technology Team will make these "what-ifs" a reality for the desktop of the near future. Code-named Project Looking Glass, these Java technology-based developments will bring 3D windowing capabilities to the desktop to offer a far richer user experience for work and play. But, it's not only about looks, it's about creating an engaging user experience, one that can make communications and collaboration even easier.

It's basically Sun's spin on a 3D desktop environment. I remember seeing early previews of this at a JavaOne keynote a few years ago, and everyone definitely sat up and took notice. Even at that early stage, they had video playing in real time on a 3D object. It would be awesome to see some of this tech integrated into GNOME and KDE a few versions from now.

Self-Cleaning Glass

Self-Cleaning Glass 06/08/2004 09:07 AM

activ_glass.jpg LogoThey've been developing it for years, so it's good news to see that the Pilkington Activ glass -- the self-cleaning "eco glass" coated with a film of titanium dioxide -- is finally being put to use in commercial development. If you hadn't see it before, the Activ glass has two advantages over normal glass: the first is the photocatalytic effect that reacts to sunlight to break down organic dirt, and the second is an enhanced hydrophilic tendency of water running on the glass to form sheets instead of droplets (like Rain-X, for instance). The combination of the two effects means that every time it rains (as I hear it does a lot in UK, where the technology was developed), the outside of the windows clean themselves.

Through the Typing Glass

Through the Typing Glass 07/01/2004 12:22 PM

FacetopSo you thought the upcoming enhancements to iChat AV sounded cool? Wait until you see Facetop:

Facetop superimposes transparent images of a computer's desktop over video images of the user to allow the user to look at the video and desktop at the same time.

The video shows a ghostly mirror image of the user so that when he points, his video reflection appears to touch objects on the screen. The system tracks fingertip position in the video to allow the user to control the mouse pointer.

Essentially it looks like two users are working with a pane of glass containing the desktop between them. UNC is developing this technology as part of their research into software to aid in pair programming over a distance. Pretty cool. This is possible on OSX right now, but Windows folks will apparently need to wait for Longhorn for the neccesary support.

Raise a glass for Pat

Raise a glass for Pat 05/07/2004 03:28 AM

Leonard pulled the recent under the radar stuff about Pat Tillman into one nice post. I was impressed with Tillman's resolve and unselfishness in ditching sports for the military, but after reading the SFGate article he sounds like an interesting and very human person to boot. The funeral sounded like a perfect send-off, done the way he would have wanted it, and Ted Rall is an asshole for making a dark cynical joke of the guy's ultimate sacrifice.

This is why blogs are a good thing for the existing media - due to the language used at the funeral, no media outlet in america can carry it, and probably due to our religious sensibilities, the photo from the funeral is only running on an overseas news wire. So you can only get the rest of the story thanks to the millions of eyeballs scouring the net for interesting angles on what would otherwise be one-dimensional soundbites.

Windows Longhorn Glass Look

Windows Longhorn Glass Look 01/07/2004 04:57 PM
The new glass look of Windows Longhorn is very pretty. This is of course a challenge to imitate in HTML. It's Internet Explorer for Windows only. CSS does most of the work, and there's a little bit of Javascript. It's slow and useless, but it's pretty! Now if I only had Mozilla's curved borders, Safari's text-shadow, Opera's speed and SVG's Gaussian blur to finish it off. ?

I was bitching about bad technology to a senior person without a soapbox for this kind of thing, who wrote back: “That's how I feel about my life in general. I get in a car to go to work. Dumb, and filthy. I use horrible cellular technologies that drop 5 times on my way to work. I use airplanes that are 30 year old technology to fly, for God's sake, to do a keynote where most people can't see me, and to do 10 customer meetings I'd rather do with a very high quality video conference. And then I use a laptop whose UI hasn't advanced in, oh, 14 years.” I’m a bit more cheery than my correspondent about user interfaces, but is that an excellent wake-up call or what?

ADO.NET 2.0 Feature Matrix 07/13/2004 12:25 AM
ADO.NET 2.0 comes with a plethora of new features. This includes a new base-class–based provider model and features that all providers can take advantage of, as well as changes that are specific to System.Data.SqlClient. Because the .NET Framework 2.0 is being released in conjunction with SQL Server 2005, some of these features require SQL Server 2005 to be usable. This article is meant to serve as an overview and roadmap of the new features, give examples of their use, and includes a chart of which features are provider-neutral and which are SqlClient-specific. In future articles in this series, I'll be going over some of the features in greater detail. In addition, there are many new features of the DataSet and friends; these will be covered in future articles.

Matrix reviews 11/05/2003 02:29 PM

STLtoday: "The Matrix Revolutions" is awful. It's not merely hapless or disappointing - it's a total catastrophe, an apocalyptic waste of money and talent that obliterates its very purpose, which was to resolve the cosmological questions that were posed by that misbegotten middle child, "The Matrix Reloaded."

Daily Trojan: "by the time the long awaited denouement is delivered, which reveals the power behind the Machine World, the "Deus Ex Machina," most viewers will already be looking at their watches."

matrix.jpg

Tri-City Herald: "If this is what big-budget freedom does to filmmakers, they should be kept in chains. Louder, longer, more expensive and dumber than its predecessors, "Revolutions" is a mediocrity that will provide escapism only to those who head for the theater exits."

CBS News: "Revolutions" eats all of the goodwill built up by "The Matrix," and then some. It isn't just bad moviemaking -- it's a bizarrely self-destructive film."

BBC NEWS: "No-one really expects sequels to be better than the original, but Matrix Revolutions is a crushing disappointment in almost every way."

More reviews.

Now that your expectations have been sufficiently lowered, feel free to go see it. I certainly will.
