Cowon iAudio M3 Review 05/18/2004 12:01 PM

CNet reviews the Cowon iAudio M3, the hard disk-based player that manages to be smaller than the iPod, albeit by moving the display and controls to an in-line module. It that's not the sort of thing that bothers you, though (and if you haven't had a portable player with an...

JetAudio iAudio M3 Review 08/27/2004 01:48 PM

jetaudio_m3_review.jpg imageThere's a really easy way to tell if you'd be interested in the JetAudio iAudio M3. If you like in-line remotes, give it a shot. If you can't stand them - and I know there are some of you out there - don't bother.

The iAudio makes a claim to be the World's Smallest 20GB hard disk-based music player (there's a 40GB version now, too) and it clearly is, as long as you ignore the inline remote, where the engineers have offloaded the LCD screen and most of the controls. It's not a bad gimmick, really, and for somebody that uses in-line remote (I happen to love them), it really makes a lot of sense. In fact, if there are any serious failings of the iAudio M3, it's in the controls and software, not the atypical form factor.

I write more words about the M3 after the jump.

iaudio_m3l.jpg imageRemember the iAudio M3? "Not an iPod; don't care" you say? A quick refresher - slimline Korean MP3 audio player with 20GB hard drive.

It just may be time to start complaining to Apple about your iPod's battery life. Korea's Cowon Systems has introduced the "iAudio M3L," which is the same thing as the iAudio M3 but with a pretty beefy 35 hour battery life. It may not beat the 220 hour battery life of Panasonic's new MP3/CD player, but 35 hours is almost double anything I've seen on other hard drive-based MP3 players.

iAudio U2 Flash Player

iAudio U2 Flash Player 07/29/2004 09:59 AM

iaudiou2.jpg imageKorea-based iAudio (whose products sell in the West under the Cowon and JetAudio brands) has released a new flash MP3 player model, the U2, which is slightly smaller than a lighter, but is still available in sizes up to one gigabyte. All the other goodies we've come to expect from flash players are there, too (FM receiver and recording, USB 2.0, irritating burning sensation), and still the U2 manages a (claimed) 20 hour battery life -- rechargeable battery, that is, not AAA like many other flash players.

Looks okay! I've been very cool on flash players, having been disappointed by so many for so long, but they are getting very usable and very useful now that storage sizes have gotten affordable. At $350 it's still spendy compared to hard disk players, but come on; the thing isn't much bigger than many players' in-line displays.

iAudio M3 Adds 40GB Version 06/18/2004 02:29 PM

iaudiom3_40gb.jpg imageHave we mentioned the new iAudio M3 HDD player now comes in a 40GB version? If we hadn't, we should have, so now we will. It also appears to be available in a darker charcoal gray in addition to the original silver. The iAudio M3, as you may recall, bills itself as one of the slimmest hard disk MP3 players out there, a feat it accomplishes by stuffing the LCD and most of the controls into its in-line remote.

intro_m3.jpg image

Some of the graphic design geeks over at Kirupa Forum decided to have a 'Logo Design Battle,' a sort of visual arts freestyle competition, and they chose Gizmodo to riff off of. And as much as we love our current design (not that we aren't always tweaking), we thought it was pretty cool they liked Gizmodo enough to use us as a springboard, so we thought maybe we'd up the ante a bit and offer a new JetAudio iAudio M3 20GB hard disk MP3 player to the winner of the contest (after we review the damn thing, that is). So if you're a designer and you want to head over to their forums and join the battle, we'd love to see what neat graphics you come up with.

Waterfield Bags launched a SleeveCase designed specifically for the Mac Mini within weeks of the official Apple announcement. In its default configuration as I received it, the SleeveCase is merely what it claims to be, a case into which a Mac Mini will fit. However, Waterfield offers a configuration with a detachable shoulder strap. (read the review) This makes it very comparable to the eM2 bag we reviewed a few weeks ago...

Eratech EMP-Z II Review

Eratech EMP-Z II Review 06/24/2004 07:58 AM

eratech_emp-zii.jpg imageI want to hate the Eratech EMP-ZII. I mean, it's an MP3 player shaped as a shiny metal egg, right? Sure it's cute, but it must suck. Lo and behold, though, as I read through this review at I4U, I kept finding more and more to recommend it -- earphone cords that double as the necklace? Custom uploadable wallpaper? Nice. With only 128MB of memory (at least as reviewed), the EMP-ZII is really more jewelry than MP3 player, but for whatever reason -- probably because they seem to have done such a good job with it -- I'm fine with that.

No US prices or distributors yet, but the word is that's soon to change.

Filemaker Pro 7 Review

Filemaker Pro 7 Review 04/18/2004 09:51 AM

FileMaker Pro 7 review by PC Magazine: Here an interesting review of the new FileMaker Pro 7.

Compared with Microsoft Access, FileMaker retains a distinctive edge in usability. Granted, Access has the advantage when it comes to implementing larger-scale applications that have heftier programmatic needs. But Version 7 extends FileMaker's appeal farther into the midrange database space.

I played with this app once, and, true to its Mac roots, it was intuitive and anything and just as easy to use.

I was encouraged to find a few ODBC drivers as well, but if you're going to remove the interface, what's the point? (Maybe not fair — I think there's a legitimate use for data creation and administration via the client app, and publishing to the world via the Web, but that's just me. Use the app to manage to content, then just FTP it up to your server.)

Yet, the gruffness of a good number of Linux pros is enough to scare off all but the most ardent Linux pursuers. Maybe that's Linux's way of ensuring survival of the fittest. Not everyone who's experienced with Linux is rough and rude, though. Michael Davis knows what it's like to be a Linux virgin who needs to be treated with tenderness. With that in mind, Davis created LinuxVirgins.com, a gentle guide for first-time Linux users.
