Rating iTunes Tracks from the Keyboard

Rating iTunes Tracks from the Keyboard 07/15/2004 08:33 PM
I may be a moron, but I can't seem to find a way to assign a rating to the currently playing track using the keyboard. The only way seems to involve the mouse and bringing up the track's info window, clicking to the "Options" tab, and so on. There's no way I'm going to rate more than a handful of tracks using such a slow and tedious method. But until I do, the "Party Shuffle" feature produces far less than...

Jon Johansen, also known as DVD Jon, has once again attacked Apple's method of protecting iTunes bought from the Music Store. The Norwegian programmer famous for breaking the encryption software that protected and localized DVDs, has found a way of buying digital rights management-free tracks using his PyMusique application. Since the iTunes Music Store adds the digital rights management tag after a track has been bought and downloaded, Johansen has devised a front-end that, according to engadget, "conveniently neglects to wrap the file with any copy protection."

IO Data Shirobako, iTunes Compatible NAS 04/04/2005 10:45 AM

shirobako.jpg imageTo commemorate the third year of their "Chousensha" brand (a play on words for "SUPERTANK"), IO Data Device is currently displaying the "Shirobako" Network Attached Storage (NAS) kit. The interesting thing here is the iTunes support and price point (under 20,000 yen). iTunes will recognize the iTunes folders containing audio files on the Shirobako ("white box"), at which point the files can be listened to or transferred to an iPod. IO Data said they're also looking into a function to allow the iPod to sync directly with the Shirobako, which could turn out to be more exciting.

Technorati tracks 3M bl0gs!

Technorati tracks 3M bl0gs! 07/07/2004 08:10 AM

OK. I promise not to boast about every 1M blogs Technorati adds, but it's an opportunity to quote some interesting facts.

Sifry's Alerts
Technorati tracks 3 million blogs

On an average weekday, we're seeing over 15,000 new weblogs created per day. That means that a new weblog is created somewhere in the world every 5.8 seconds.

Of course, not all weblogs that are created are actively updated. Even though abandonment rates are high - our analyses show that about 45% of the weblogs we track have not had a post in over 3 months we are still tracking a significant population of people who are posting each day. The number of conversations are increasing. We're seeing over 275,000 individual posts every day. That means that on average, more than 3 blogs are updated every second. The median time from when someone posts something to their weblog to when it is indexed and available for searches on Technorati is 7 minutes. And we're striving to handle the load. But to be perfectly frank, it isn't easy. We've had some bugs and some outages - and for that I am truly sorry. I don't think the service is fast enough or stable enough. So, stability and fast response time is job #1, over new features and product developments. It has to work, 100% of the time.

Or Novell or Microsoft's sprawling campus? And what about Los Cerritos (9 square miles of Aiirmesh coverage) or Santa Clara (25 square miles of MetroFi coming online)?...
