Casio A5406CA Pictures 05/18/2004 08:54 AM

Hey, who would have thought that Casio would put high resolution pictures of their new autofocusing 3.2-megapixel phone on their web site? That's just crazy! Fortunately, Gizmodo reader Jef went off on a lark and found them, passing them on to me to share with all of you. What's next?...

Casio Exilim Pro EX-P505 02/01/2005 09:09 PM

casio-p505.jpg imageCasio has released the new XP-P505, a 5-megapixel camera with a 5x optical lens and a 1cm macro mode (that means you can get really close to that bug or flower before you accidentally crush it). It has a decent start-up time of just under a second and can also take movies in MPEG-4 format at 30 frames per second, stored on SD/MMC memory cards.

The Exilim EX-Z55 is compact and lightweight, yet it offers a generous 2.5-inch LCD. The bright, outsized monitor is nice, but the picture quality fell short of expectations.

Casio XFER XF-1000 WiFi TV 05/25/2004 11:49 AM
Not content to let Sony and Sharp's WiFi TVs dominate the (I'm maintaining minuscule) market, Casio will be releasing the XFER XF-1000, a 10-inch 640 x 480 wireless screen that lacks most of the unique networking of Sony's LocationFree, instead...

Casio Develops Tiny Ceramic Lens

Casio Develops Tiny Ceramic Lens 08/02/2004 02:08 PM

Transparent-Ceramic-Lens-16.jpg imageCasio has developed the world's first optical lens constructed from transparent ceramics, making it possible to create cameras with optical zoom that are even thinner than existing models. Not only do the new ceramic lens have a greater refractive index (they bend light more than glass) they are also considerably stronger - important in something that gets dropped as often as cameras.

No word when to expect the tiny lens to start being used in cameras (and cameraphones), although I'm sure if you're a manufacturer Casio would be delighted to talk to you about it.

Special ULTRAMAN Edition Casio Exilim
Zoom EX-Z55
12/19/2004 03:01 PM

ultraman_exilim.jpg imageBandai and Casio have teamed up to release a version of the 5-megapixel Exilim Zoom EX-Z55 branded with the logo of the seminal Japanese superhero ULTRAMAN. Although externally the changes aren't much more than an aluminum logo plate and a special wallet, the start up graphics will now display a couple of seconds of footage from an upcoming ULTRAMAN movie. Should you be impressed? By the exclusivity, maybe—there will only be 200 made. Otherwise, even if you have a hankerin' for the ULTRA, it's sort of a lame excuse for a special edition.

How long, though, before Sony cameras (for instance) come pre-loaded with movie trailers for upcoming Sony Pictures releases? If they hadn't thought of that already and I just gave them the idea, I ask for your forgiveness (and 1 million ThoughtBucks from Sony).

01/05/2005 03:58 PM
Xeni Jardin: Off in the distance, I can hear the wailing of the hipsters and the rending of their ironic garments. Boing Boing reader Christian Cantrell says,
The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI issued a warning to the Transportation Security Administration recently stating that al-Qaida may attempt to use watches with cigarette lighters or Casio watches with built-in altimeters to detonate bombs on board US airliners. Apparently, the altimeters built into some Casio watches can be modified to detonate bombs at certain altitudes. They are apparently favored by cost-conscious terrorists since Casio watches are affordable and easily obtained.

Casio updates small, thin Exilim camera
range
08/27/2004 02:02 PM
Casio Computer Co. Ltd. has taken the wraps off five new digital still cameras it will begin selling worldwide in the run-up to this year's end-of-year sales season. The models include a slimmer version of its flagship Exilim camera that is the first to use a recently developed transparent ceramic lens. The Tokyo company first launched its Exilim range in 2002 and the credit-card-sized cameras soon began to steal market share from competitors. Canon Inc., Pentax Corp., Sony Corp. and others soon launched their own models into the small-size sector and this area now leads the digital camera market. For the first week of August, small-size models from Casio, Canon and Sony held the top four positions on a domestic sales ranking of all digital still cameras in Japan compiled by GfK Marketing Services Japan Ltd.

Captioned Pictures in CSS

Captioned Pictures in CSS 08/18/2004 10:26 AM

Photo Cards: Here's a good, simple, obvious solution to an annoying problem. Whenever a picture needed a caption, I surrounded the entire thing in a DIV and floated it left or right. However, I had to set the width of the DIV so it would float correctly, and to do this, I had to know the width of the image, which may or may not have been available at code-time.

Though, we have to remember the width of floated blocks must be set (otherwise they may be spread to the full width and there's no floating). Of course, we can solve it by setting display:inline to the DIV — the width of floating element is then adjusted by its content. But we have to remove all blocks inside it (inline elenent must not contain blocks) and use only line breaks BR. Sometimes this simplified formatting may be sufficient.

I never would have thought to set a DIV to "display: inline." Yes, now you have an ugly BR tag, but you've traded an unknown problem (the width of the image) for a known one (the existence of a BR), and I can live with that.

(BTW, I'm finding all these great CSS articles via this feed, which has the most fantastic set of CSS links I've seen every single day. I don't know anything about the site except that each day its full of great new solutions to thorny CSS issues. I understand its some kind of roll-up site for a bunch of CSS links from a bunch of different people, but I don't really care. Just keep them coming.)

pmc100_03_mini.jpg image

DAPreview found some new hi-resolution shots of the upcoming iRiver PMC-100, the Microsoft-based Portable Media Center that is the cousin to the non-Microsoft PMP-120/140. It looks considerably different than the original, more slab-like mockup we'd shown you, but it does look a lot more practical to use. It also looks like it is probably just a remolded bit of plastic that fits over the same hardware that powers the PMP-1xx series players.

I still like the old design better, but I also know which one I'd rather hold in my hands for two hours at a time.
