Renewable energy: thinking outside the (clamshell) box. The US Dept. of Agriculture has given notice that funds are available for "developing renewable energy systems from the use of diseased livestock as a process raw material for the energy source." As in, all the cattle killed during December's Mad Cow Disease scare. Because "traditional rendering processes were determined not to effectively deactivate the infectivity of prions."

At this point the wave of mydoom/novarg/sco virus mail's sorta abated, and everyone who has a clue has their mail going through virus/worm/trojan filters before it gets to them, so our mailboxes are mostly blissfully virus free. As that leaves more MTA CPU time available for slinging Nigerian Scam mail around I'm not sure whether it's an overall improvement in the state of the 'net, but you take whatever you can get, I suppose. Unfortunately, while I'm not getting the viruses, and the spam gets generally caught and filtered, there are still all those damn "the mail you didn't send...

Night All

Ok.  Its officially now 19 straight hours at the keyboard.  The last database update for today is done.  The database is up to 14818 posts, 1309 rss urls and all seems well and good.  Am I 100% happy?  Of course not.  There's like a zillion and one things to do but "bit by bit" you know.

I'll be online and grinding on this all day tomorrow I suspect.

All alone in the night 03/06/2004 02:03 AM
Bad day. Two unscheduled meetings, one scheduled, but failed meeting, far too much email, far too much confusion, lost laptop, and to top it all off, an unnecessary ride back home to check whether I left the iron on.

The trams and stars don't care. They just travel on their paths, unaware of the problems of the insignificant little creatures that happen to be traveling along.

Happened last night 09/20/2004 12:17 PM
I remember dreaming that something was lost. I woke in the middle of the night, not knowing what or why I was seeking so desperately. Something was missing, and I could not say what.

Then I found it on the floor, where it had apparently fallen off the bed during the night.

I lifted it and put it back next to my pillow where it belongs, and fell back to a dreamless sleep. With a smile on my face.

I wonder... How long can one shirt keep her scent?

What a day and half a night!

What a day and half a night! 06/25/2004 07:09 AM

Well I have had one heck of day woke up this morning to agonizing back pain stretched for a while to try and get the back to loosen up. Went downstairs and found the meds the doc had stocked me up on. A OxyCooden and a Flexeril and 20 minutes later I was doing much better. After a 2 hour nap I am up trying to get some work done. Start off and play around with Top Style and Homesite deciding that I still like Hotmetal better for regular html stuff but Top Style is the ticket for CSS. Went ahead and paid for that over the web and no I don't have to deal with the trial nags.

About 2 this afternoon I decide I have the templates and the CSS cleaned up as much as it is gonna be on the MT3 Test site and decide to roll the production to MT3 along with a couple of other sites I run. Start backups of the 2.6 site along with downloading the databases etc. Between a run to the pharmacy dinner and messing with the kids. This site is now running MT3. I then decided to do some house cleaning on the Laptop as I have been abusing it for the past 2 months and needed to get all of the software I have bought along with all of the programs that I decided where not worth it de-installed and general file organization. Burn a couple of Master DVD's etc etc etc. So here I am at 1:45am Hawaiian time and I am ready to see what has happened in the tech world news. No wonder my wife calls me nuts sometimes.

But I will tell you one thing that I have been able to get done while recovering from spine surgery is that I am remote logging into all of my machines and getting them organized and sync'd. Wife said her PC has not run this good in a couple of years. Amazing what you can get done when you have nothing but time on your hands.

You can easily encrypt your traffic when attached to someone else’s network. 3. You can safely plug in at a hotel without other guests reading your email. 2. Should Cable Broadband Be Regulated At
The State Level?

Should Cable Broadband Be Regulated At
The State Level?
12/22/2003 01:46 PM
The latest Above the Crowd column from Bill Gurley takes a close look at a recent 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision concerning whether or not cable broadband services should be regulated as a telecommunications service by the states. Gurley trashes the ruling (which decided they should be) saying that it goes against what the federal government has made clear as well as against what makes the most sense for the internet. Instead, the only group to benefit from this ruling are the state Public Utility Commissions. Everyone else will suffer. He admits that some say the regulation could increase competitiveness, but points out that DSL is already regulated this way and is losing out to unregulated cable offerings (which are even more expensive). He suggests that the market has already shown that they favor an unregulated solution. I agree with the general premise, but I'm not so sure that the current lead cable has is because their "winning" the competitive battle so much as they've more effectively leveraged their own monopoly. I use cable modem service at home because that was the only choice I had - and no one else has come along to offer a compelling alternative yet. However, because my service is a monopoly, it's treated as such: meaning the customer service is dreadful and the prices keep rising. So far, the DSL providers have had their own problems. The real issue is that neither side is doing much to make consumers happy.

Telcos Falling Farther Behind Cable In
Broadband?

Telcos Falling Farther Behind Cable In
Broadband?
03/24/2005 02:23 PM
The ongoing battle between telcos and cablecos for broadband dominance seems to be one where it's much easier to note the mistakes than the successes. A new report is saying that telcos are falling even further behind cable -- which, if true, would suggest that the telcos have squandered a golden opportunity. It's not clear that it's true, though. Other studies have shown that the cheaper price and aggressive advertising practices by telcos have helpe d them close the gap with cable providers, who were first out of the gate in the US with broadband offerings. Of course, part of the problem is that the telcos still don't trust DSL. They never wanted to offer it to consumers initially, and only did so when they felt forced to by cable offerings -- even if DSL is now w hat's keeping them alive. However, the cheap DSL prices aren' t really that cheap and the forced bundling with local telephone lines makes the problem even worse. People are willing to buy cheap broadband -- but all of the strings attached mean that it's just as easy to go with cable -- the supposedly "expensive" provider. Add into that equation the fact that at least some cable providers are realizing that by offering VoIP for next to nothing they can steal away more telco customers, and the telcos need to do something. Right now, it appears their focus is on fiber , fiber and more fiber -- but it makes you wonder if they really would have been able to get away with denyi ng fiber to certain locations if they didn't get the regulatory changes they wanted. If cable were eating their lunch, suddenly fiber would look better, no matter what the regulatory environment.

TV content aggregation is not a business for network operators, who will do better to form partnerships with satellite and cable operators to sell TV over broadband. Gross margins on TV can be as low as 20% but operators need TV services to compete with triple-play competitors. Fixed broadband (BB) operators providing TV reduce the net present value (NPV) of their business model over the first five years, according to Analysys calculations for this report.
