Automating deployment with Subversion

Automating deployment with Subversion 04/07/2005 12:02 AM

Any developer knows that deployment is often a highly-manual process. In this edition of Linux.Ars, the crew looks at a tool — Subversion — that can make deployment from a development to production environment nearly painless.

The process is fairly painless. On the development server, I check out my website from Subversion. This, particularly when adding an existing project to Subversion, allows me to make sure that i have a complete working copy under version control. Next, I add a post-commit script on my Subversion server.

There's more, but you'll have to read on to get the goods on Subversion. In addition, we've got Tools, Tips, and Tweaks covering Synergy, an app that allows you to control multiple machines using a single keyboard and mouse, and even share a clipboard. There's also other tidbits from the week's Linux news and of course, the Cool App of the Week. Read on.

Perl is a fantastic tool for system administrators -- even on Windows. Thomas Herchenroeder explains how he wrapped dnscmd with Perl to make changes easily.

Automating The Hiring Manager

Automating The Hiring Manager 06/01/2004 02:43 AM
Computerized job screening technology has been popular in the casino and hotel industry for some time, but now it appears that many more retail outlets are mak ing all job applicants fill out a computer questionnaire first, which does a first pass filter on whether or not they're worth pursuing. Some stores are even setting up kiosks in the store for job applicants - and if a good one comes by, they may page the manager to grab them before they can get out the door. Meanwhile, some other stores are relying on the technology even after they've hired people to help track their progress and monitor their work. Now all we need is the computer to decide who should be fired (and maybe have it send an email or SMS with the bad news) and people really will be working for the machine...

Automating feed subscriptions

Automating feed subscriptions 02/01/2005 09:34 PM

The idea of getting a browser to handle a feed correctly when it encounters an appropriate MIME type is gaining steam. Randy put together a spec for how to configure your feeds to handle what he’s calling the Universal Subscription Mechanism. By adding a bit of code to your feeds, any feed reader that understands the spec and registers itself as the RSS helper app for your browser can automatically handle feeds when you open an RSS document on the web.

Randy’s taken things a step further and written a small shim for Windows that works with your browser to pass feeds off to My Yahoo.

We’ve also added support for this to Pheedo, so in addition to inserting ads into your feeds, you can also easily USM-enable your feeds.

GlueTheos: Automating the Retrieval and Analysis of Data from Publicly Available Software Repositories by Gregorio Robles, Jesús M. González-Barahona and Rishab A. Ghosh
http://opensource.mit.ed/papers/robles-barahona-ghosh_gluetheos.p df

Abstract by Authors:
For efficient, large scale data mining of publicly available information about libre (free, open source) software projects, automating the retrieval and analysis processes is a must. A system implementing such automation must have into account the many kinds of repositories with interesting information (each with its own structure and access methods), and the many kinds of analysis which can be applied to the retrieved data. In addition, such a system should be capable of interfacing and reusing as much existing software for both retrieving and analyzing data as possible. As a proof of concept of how that system could be, we started sometime ago to implement the GlueTheos system, featuring a modular, flexible architecture which has been already used in several of our studies of libre software projects. In this paper we show its structure, how it can be used, and how it can be extended.

Governance by citizenry

Governance by citizenry 12/17/2003 10:52 AM
How are we going to implement in governance the Net-based citizen involvement that the campaign has initiated? Here's one idea. Let's say you care about the e-voting scandal that's just waiting to happen. So, you go to your Senator's site. There you find a "Citizen-to-Citizen" (C2C) page that lists the current issues constituents are discussing. A search for "e-voting" turns up nothing, so you are now prompted to create a C2C group on the topic. You write up your description of the problem and include some supporting links. Automatically, a new space is created with its own page and with...

They are pleased to announce the launch of the Internet Governance Project
(IGP), a multi-university partnership to analyze global Internet policy
issues. IGP's research agenda is closely related to the on-going United
Nations' review of Internet Governance.

IGP's member institutions include two research centers at Syracuse University:
- The Convergence Center at the School of Information Studies
- The Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at the Maxwell School
and one research center at the Georgia Institute of Technology:
- The Internet and Public Policy Project (IP3) at the School of Public
Policy

As its first project IGP is providing the United Nations' Information and
Communication Technologies Task Force (UN ICT TF) a detailed analysis of
global policy regimes. The resulting study will provide a fact-based "map" of
existing global rules for the Internet and the institutions that make those
rules.
