03/06/2004 01:55 AM

Nearly one half of American internet users have contributed digital content to cyberculture, according to a new study from the Pew Internet and American Life project .

According to "Content Creation Online" :

  • 21% of Internet users say they have posted photographs to Web sites.
  • 20% say they have allowed others to download music or video files from their computers.
  • 17% have posted written material on Web sites.
  • 13% maintain their own Web sites.
  • 10% have posted comments to an online newsgroup.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most active demographic group is those under 25.

Mercator Advisory Group Report Comments
on Paid Content and Micropayment Models
08/30/2004 03:15 AM
Without realistic models of payment for news articles, images and downloads, vendors on the Internet have been forced to give away their wares for many years now, using advertising as a means of drawing revenue from their sites. With ad revenues dropping, many of these sites are now attempting to put the genie back in the bottle and asking their users to pay for content, much of this valued at under a couple of dollars. This is where micropayments come in. [PRWEB Aug 30, 2004]

Users and Admins
09/03/2004 08:15 AM
Day nine of aKademy saw the start of the Users and Administrator's Conference, and the celebration of the international Software Freedom Day. With the end of the developers' section of the summit, the hacking rooms began to thin out, but the loss in numbers was accommodated by (for the most part local) crowds of users filing in to hear from developers and other users and administrators. And for those following the SUSE-Novell developments, a keynote from a Novell employee was not to be missed.

Report: some Napster users share
passwords to save money

Report: some Napster users share
passwords to save money
04/09/2005 03:30 AM
Xeni Jardin: An article in the Register today reports that it is possible for more than one person to share a username/password simultaneously on Napster's digital music service, so they don't have to pay for separate accounts.
Over the past couple of days MusicAlly has run several tests, during which we were able to download and stream simultaneously from four separate computers across two separate Internet connections for good stretches of time. Our findings so far suggest this situation is the same whether we use a trial account, a paid-for credit card account or the £14.95 Napster To Go service. By comparison, several other Internet subscription services, including Real's Rhapsody, log the first user out automatically if a second user logs in using the same username and password.

Arguably the fact that one of the subsequent users could order one of Napster's paid-for permanent downloads, thus adding a charge to the original user's card, provides a small disincentive against sharing usernames and passwords. But Napster requires users to insert their credit card security number before making a major purchase, such as the upgrade from the £9.95 service to Napster To Go. What's more, the credit card numbers themselves are not exposed on the accounts page, so there's no danger of having your card details ripped off by someone with whom you're sharing the music service.

Pew Report States That 27 Percent of
Users Download Digital Music and Video
03/26/2005 12:51 PM

The Pew Internet & American Life Project reported this week that 36 million Americans, 27 percent of internet users, report having downloaded music or video files. Half of this group have skirted the traditional peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and commercial online distribution services (i.e. Napster, iTunes). This is a significant number of digital media users whose sharing of digital media is untraceable by the recording industry and copyright holders.
