Lycos Jumps On The 1Gb Email Train (But
Not Really)
05/18/2004 01:13 PMAs expected, lots of other providers are trying to jump on the 1 gig
of email train started by Google's Gmail announcement last month.
Yahoo already announced their
version
which is actually 100mb of free storage for email and "virtually
unlimited" storage for paid accounts (though the very real limits are
not explained). Lycos, however, has marketing people who realize the
entire focus is on that "1 gig" number and have announced that they've
beaten Google to the punch by offering 1 gig of email storage today.
Of course, beneath that comes the fine print that points out
the one gig is only for paid users. Free users have
a very Yahoo-like 100 mb.

03/19/2005 03:09 AMYuck! It looks like we are going to be dealing with more layoffs again
with IBM. Those that are to be hit this time will be those inWestern
Europe. I feel for these folks as we have been dealing with the same
sort of issues here in the States for sometime now. I have no doubt
that there are going to be plenty of ill feelings to go around as
these sort of layoffs continue….

03/06/2004 01:57 AMTom Dyson has created Mailbucket, a nice (and currently free) web
service that takes emails and turns them into RSS feeds. It's very
useful for mailing lists that you would rather read as RSS feeds. I've
already set up two RSS feeds, Strangelove.xml for the mailing list I
am a sponsor of (more info at the Strangelove web site), and
Berkeley.xml for press releases from UC Berkeley. Feel free to
subscribe to either. IUpload has a similar service, Mail by RSS, that
I haven't tried. Found via Kellan of LaughingMeme....

VeriSign shows off new email protection
service
06/28/2004 11:39 AMVerisign announced on Monday their new e-mail security service to stop
spam and viruses. The service uses heuristic tools, custom blacklists,
and fingerprinting to calculate the probability that a particular
e-mail message is spam after looking at a pattern of characteristics.
The heuristic tools use over 10,000 rules to see if a message is spam.
The service also uses three antivirus engines to block malicious mail.
VeriSign has started free trials of the service, which will be
available on July 12. Pricing details were not announced today.

Ribbon Dancer robot
Ribbon Dancer robot
06/05/2005 11:47 PMAt Gel, Bruce Shapiro, artist in
residence at the Science Museum of Minnesota, talked about his notion
of "motion control" as an "emerging medium for artistic expression".
As his website explains,
motion control is a "term used to describe a variety of techniques for
orchestrating the movement of machinery and objects".
One of the machines he brought to demonstrate its artistic
expression was Ribbon
Dancer. The willowy one-armed robot performed a routine for us for
a couple minutes to a classical piece of music. Near the end of the
piece, the ribbon got hung up on the lower part of the apparatus while
the arm kept going with the routine, tugging obliviously on the caught
fabric. The crowd gasped. For a second there, we thought the arm was
going to pull the whole thing over -- not unlike the robot-like AT-AT that
got tripped up by a Rebel harpoon on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back
-- but Bruce stepped in to stop the machine and free the ribbon.
Despite the mistake, the crowd's emotional reaction to the dancer's
potentially hazardous misstep demonstrated the potential for the
acceptance of artistic expression by machines.
(And in a somewhat more disturbing demonstration of the dancer's
representation of life, when Bruce stopped it at the end of the
routine and began to walk off the stage, it began to twitch awkwardly
from some stray electrical signals, a death rattle of sorts.
Bruce leapt back on stage and pulled the plug; the twitching abruptly
stopped and the arm fell slack atop the metal shaft, like he'd killed
it.)
