UMaine launches free
culture/code/knowledge service
12/16/2003 11:12 AMThe University of Maine has launched "Still Water," a copyright-free
zone for posting and sharing images, music, videos, programming code
and texts.
"We are training revolutionaries -- not by indoctrinating them with
dogma but by exposing them to a process in which sharing culture
rather than hoarding it is the norm," said Joline Blais, a professor
of new media at the University of Maine and Still Water co-director.

Chinese Theater Improvements Work -- Big
Box Office Increase
04/18/2005 08:01 AMLast month, we noted that the movie industry in the US might want to
steal a few pages from the playbook of the Chinese movie industry.
While the American movie studios whine and complain that
they'
ll never get people to come to the movies, the Chinese movie
industry (where counterfeiting movies is a
much, much, much
bigger problem than in the US) decided to compete by
recog
nizing that movie-going is a social experience and coming up with
ways to improve that overall experience. Would you believe it worked?
The latest studies show
a huge increase in
the box office take in China last year. Movies are entertainment
-- but it's not just the content. If the industry worked on ways to
make the movie-going experience, itself, much more enjoyable, it
wouldn't matter if even they, themselves, made the content available
for free download. People can drink alcohol at home, and they do, but
they still go out to bars, and pay
much more to do so, because
it's part of the social experience. You don't see the liquor (or bar)
companies freaking out about all this "home drinking."

How to make a PDA really work for you
How to make a PDA really work for you
12/10/2003 08:02 AMPersonal digital assistants have the potential to become excellent
tools after you fix them. PDAs, and more specifically Pocket PC, seem
to be designed for sales and marketing people. You can add contacts,
tasks, and check your calendar with the default out-of-the-box setup.
Few of these activities are direly important to a network
administrator, a programmer, or even a hacker which makes these
devices mostly useless for anyone who works in computers. However,
they are still computers, and there is a growing number of programs
being written and ported to handheld devices which will make them
useful to -- imagine this -- computer users.

Make Google News work for you
03/13/2003 10:22 AMI wish I could track keywords at Google News, and have it email me
automatically whenever a new hit matches for my search term(s). In a
way, Google News serves as a low-budget clipping service -- I use it
to periodically check for press mentions of my projects and I'm
frequently surprised to find articles I would have missed
otherwise.
update: Lazyweb indulges me again. I got lots of pointers to the google news RSS
app and a perl module that could run as a cronjob. Eventually a friend
set me up with exactly what I need, which is perfect.
How to Make iPod Video Work
How to Make iPod Video Work
02/05/2005 09:12 PMQuite simply the reason the iPod Video didn't come out is that the
only video that's copyright-free is the stuff you make in iMovie
(well, you own the copyright, so it's more of a non-issue
than copyright-free). Frankly, I know few people wanting to copy
their movies of weddings, kids, and cats onto a device to view them
elsewhere. What we want are our TV programs and DVD movies.
So Apple, to make the iPod Video work, would need a PVR app (and hardware). Then Apple can let you
create content that is free of issues (personal recording is allowed,
regardless of the 1984 world the MPAA
wants us to live in) and encode it in H.264/AVC so that it can scale down to the
iPod level well (it's also used in 3G phones, so the iPod is a
no-brainer). Set it up to record whatever you want, select "iPod" as
the recording destination and then you get a file that is as small as
it can be to give good quality on the iPod. Or choose "TV" and then
use the supplied A/V cables to view on a random TV somewhere (use
those front inputs on that TV in the break room at work!).
Do this, and the world will follow quite quickly. Make it simple,
Apple simple, and the portable media market is
Apple's. Get a foothold in music and video and the iPod will clobber
all the other devices.
It's not so crazy, and it just might work. Hell, it might kill
TiVo if done right, and I love mine as much as the next guy.

Knowledge Management: A Guide To
Resources On the Internet
06/26/2004 06:07 AMKnowledge Management: A Guide To Resources On the Internet by
Michael M. Smithhttp://snipurl.com/5i2zKnowledge Management (KM) is one of many important topics being
addressed by companies in today’s complex business environment. KM
has spawned a new legion of consultants, it has provided a new
direction for many software companies, and it has given purpose to
many technologies that previously appeared to be only expensive
executive toys. However, KM is nothing new. It is a synthesis of many
ideas which when brought together create an exciting new paradigm of
research. KM is multidisciplinary and draws from communications
theory, organizational dynamics, and information organization. KM
incorporates the concepts of Senge’s Learning Organization, builds
on the foundation of intellectual capital management, and draws from
business intelligence practices.
The underlying goal of KM
is to use the knowledge embedded in the organization to maximize the
effectiveness and competitiveness of the concern. This goal appears
much too simple to have spawned such a massive movement. However, the
current business environment requires new practices to accomplish this
fundamental goal.
There are many excellent resources on the
Internet addressing the many aspects of KM. The resources listed below
offer a wide variety of information on KM provided by
academic/research organizations, information portals, consultants, and
governmental and nonprofit organizations. This has been added to
