Ok. Its officially now 19 straight hours at the
keyboard. The last database update for today is done. The
database is up to 14818 posts, 1309 rss urls and all seems well and
good. Am I 100% happy? Of course not. There's like a
zillion and one things to do but "bit by bit" you know.
I'll be online and grinding on this all day tomorrow I

Bad day. Two unscheduled meetings, one scheduled, but failed meeting,
far too much email, far too much confusion, lost laptop, and to top it
all off, an unnecessary ride back home to check whether I left the
iron on.

What a day and half a night!
What a day and half a night!
06/25/2004 07:09 AMWell I have had one heck of day woke up this morning to agonizing
back pain stretched for a while to try and get the back to loosen up.
Went downstairs and found the meds the doc had stocked me up on. A
OxyCooden and a Flexeril and 20 minutes later I was doing much better.
After a 2 hour nap I am up trying to get some work done. Start off and
play around with Top Style and Homesite deciding that I still like
Hotmetal better for regular html stuff but Top Style is the ticket for
CSS. Went ahead and paid for that over the web and no I don't have to
deal with the trial nags.
About 2 this afternoon I decide I have the templates and the CSS
cleaned up as much as it is gonna be on the MT3 Test site and decide
to roll the production to MT3 along with a couple of other sites I
run. Start backups of the 2.6 site along with downloading the
databases etc. Between a run to the pharmacy dinner and messing with
the kids. This site is now running MT3. I then decided to do some
house cleaning on the Laptop as I have been abusing it for the past 2
months and needed to get all of the software I have bought along with
all of the programs that I decided where not worth it de-installed and
general file organization. Burn a couple of Master DVD's etc etc etc.
So here I am at 1:45am Hawaiian time and I am ready to see what has
happened in the tech world news. No wonder my wife calls me nuts
sometimes.
But I will tell you one thing that I have been able to get done
while recovering from spine surgery is that I am remote logging into
all of my machines and getting them organized and sync'd. Wife said
her PC has not run this good in a couple of years. Amazing what you
can get done when you have nothing but time on your hands.

The Night before Christmas
12/24/2003 07:05 PM'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the site,
Not a poster was stirring, not even to fight;
Ante and Don were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that Spymac 3 would soon be there;
The members were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of new features danced in their heads;
And Kristie in her 'kerchief and Atari in cap,
Had just settled down for a long winters nap.

"Time

Edward Hopper's

seen
his paintings. Somehow
the solidity of the world -- even
the sky is like a wall --
is at odds with the
transience of the
people
in it, however long they
sit and
stand and
wait. Hopper's people, like
Manet's
figures

the irreducible
business of being.
Hopper, too,
would descend into his own silences, would delay
himself in self-doubt...

09/20/2004 12:17 PMI remember dreaming that something was lost. I woke in the middle of
the night, not knowing what or why I was seeking so desperately.
Something was missing, and I could not say what.
Then I found it on the floor, where it had apparently fallen off the
bed during the night.
I lifted it and put it back next to my pillow where it belongs, and
fell back to a dreamless sleep. With a smile on my face.
I wonder... How long can one shirt keep her scent?

fixing a hole
fixing a hole
12/19/2004 03:48 PMI had a wonderful time at my signing in Huntington Beach last
night. There were about forty people seated when I started, and by the
time I was finished, another fifteen or so had joined us.
Over the years, I've developed a pretty good sense of how the
audience is relating to me, and I felt like I connected with this
audience immediately, and maintained the connection all the way
through. It was awesome. The last few readings I've done have been a
hardcore geek conferences, you see, and there's been a very palpable
"Okay, prove to us that you deserve to be here, jerk." feeling from at
least part of the audience, but last night, I didn't feel any
challenge or hostility from the people there, so I was able to relax
and just do my thing.
Usually, I just thank people for coming, and get right into
reading, but last night I tried something now: I gave a little bit of
a "talk" about the internets, and the power of blogs. I talked about
how blogs are a powerful communication tool, and how blogs can be used
for very positive things, like helping our friend Kris when she had
cancer. I also talked about this awesome auction I'm a part of to
raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer's Association of Los
Angeles (that is going to be so cool, it gets its own entry in the
near future.)
I've been thinking a lot about how my life has changed, and I know
that none of this would be happening without the examination of my
life that happened because of my blog and my books. I talked a little
bit about that examination, and how I discovered this thing called
"the quarter life crisis," where we hit our mid-to-late twenties and
freak out because we don't know what we're doing (or going to do with)
our lives as we near thirty. At that time in my life, I recalled, I
was struggling not only to be a successful actor, husband, and
stepfather, but also to figure out who I was. My mom always told me
"just be yourself, and you'll be happy." That's great advice, but it's
tough to heed when you don't know who "yourself" is.
Anyway, I talked about all those things as a lead-in to the writing
of Just A Geek, and to set up where I was in my life when I
experienced the events I wrote about in Chapter
Nine of Just A Geek (pdf file), which is what I read last
night.
The actual "reading" portion of the . . . uhm . . . reading . . .
was great. I felt comfortable with the material, and it is always
entertaining (to me, anyway) to edit out the naughty words on the fly
when I read. It was extra fun last night because people were following
along in their own books, and they'd giggle when I replace "shit" with
"crap," or something similar.
When my reading was done, I took a few questions, which gave me
another opportunity to talk about how empowering the internet is, and
how I used the internet to reassert control over my creative life.
Then, I sat down and signed books for everyone there. The people who
came out were all friendly and enthusiastic, and the whole experience
was just wonderful. I was done about 8:45, and through the power of
quantum physics, I made it up to ACME by 9:30 without ever exceeding
the posted speed limit.
Shut up. I did.
