Analyzing bl0g content
Analyzing bl0g content
02/10/2004 02:49 AM
Suppose that we bloggers, collectively, wanted to migrate toward HTML
coding and CSS styling conventions that would make our content more
interoperable. Since none of us is starting from a clean slate, we'd
need to analyze current practice. Well, now we can. Here, for example,
is a concordance of use cases for HTML elements with class attributes,
drawn from the database I'm building:

Stupid Blog Post Content
09/01/2004 12:08 PMContent Usability in RSS: Hey look, we're so big now that I'm
linking to my own stuff...
It's been a year since I posted this, and the situation hasn't
gotten any better. Too many people try to be all witty and
avant-garde in their post titles and content and, as a result, getting
instantly passed over or deleted.
I get several of these a day — entries that don't
have enough information in them to help decide if I actually want to
read them or not. A lot of them just have a title and a link, and the
titles of news articles are pretty ambiguous these days.
Take a look at this
entry over at MetaFilter and ask yourself, why should I give a
crap about this? What has this author presented to make me care one
second about this content?
Notice that the author has to actually include instructions in the
post as to how it "works." Note also that the first commentor
graciously takes it upon themselves to tell everyone where the links
were going so they can figure out if they care. Another commentor
says:
I really dislike this post. Clever, but OBNOXIOUS! I
almost DON'T want to click any of these links.
I didn't even think it was that clever.
Of course, this only matters if you're trying to get people to
follow your links or read your stuff. If you're just trying to be all
black beret, wireframe glasses, and facial hair — well, then
mission accomplished.

The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content
The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content
02/10/2004 02:46 PMMajor League Baseball made news last year for
claim
ing to own all in-progress game data - saying they were going to
go after websites that reported what was happening at a game in
real-time. It didn't matter that the law is pretty clear that you
can't copyright facts - MLB believes that just presenting the data is
a "rebroadcast" of the game. That said, I guess it's no surprise to
hear that they now believe that web audio and video broadcasts of
games should work the same way as television broadcasts with a content
provider
paying a huge
upfront fee for the rights to the games, and then telling them
they can make it back in ad revenue and subscription fees. Of course,
the various internet sites they've approached with this plan have been
laughing them out the door, and pointing out that they're not
television stations, and they just want to provide something useful to
their users - but aren't going to lose money to do so. While MLB has
been at the forefront of offering streaming video and audio, it
appears they still look on this as a broadcast medium, and not the
interactive medium it actually is. They're doing their best to
squeeze more money out of existing fans, rather than attract new fans,
which is dangerous for the future of the sport. Not only do you anger
your biggest fans, you also make it less likely that you're going to
pick up new fans.

Oh No, Technology Is Going To Steal Your

Oh No, Technology Is Going To Steal Your
Job... Again
06/25/2004 12:11 PMThis is getting a bit tiresome, but it looks like now that people are
finally starting to calm down about offshoring, they're suddenly up in
arms about automation. First there was the complaint a few months ago
saying
we should stop working on certain technologies in order to save
jobs. Now, Strategy Analytics, an analyst firm that should know
better than to put out overhyped reports that don't understand history
is saying that offshoring is nothing compared to how
automation will kill
mid-level service jobs. Once again, all you need to do is look at
history to show this is wrong. Every time automation removes the need
for certain jobs, it's opened up many more opportunities, often
expanding the overall economy and raising our standards of living. It
wasn't that long ago that you needed a human operator to connect every
phone call. However, once we figured out how to automate that
process, it didn't necessarily mean a destruction of all those
operator jobs, but a new revolution in telephony which expanded so
many businesses and created so many new jobs that no one could have
imagined when the "operator" process was first automated. It's
getting repetitive to say it, but innovation is not a zero-sum game.
Automating a job doesn't just mean that the jobs go away, but that
many more new opportunities open up.

Using Cameraphones to Steal Identities

There's a bit of a scare story on Florida Today
about criminals using cameraphones to steal personal information from
you, like credit card numbers or ATM PINs. While no arrests have been
made—in fact, it's all speculation!—there's an important
lesson we can learn from all of this: pay for everything by trading
bales of home-spun quilts.

Will Intel Steal the Show?
Will Intel Steal the Show?
03/08/2004 11:15 PMIntel's moves in the Wi-Fi market may squeeze out other players in the
market, including access point makers: Intel is moving toward building
chips that can allow a laptop to serve as an AP. Some say if that
becomes standard gear in laptops, it may threaten the vendors that
make standalone access points. I have to agree with some of the
comments in this story that while in some cases it is convenient for a
laptop to serve as an AP, at other times it isn't. I would prefer a
standalone AP in my house because otherwise I'd have to keep my laptop
running all the time. I suspect that laptops with built-in APs will
appeal to a certain market but it won't kill the market for standalone
APs. Intel could also give TiVo a run for its money as it develops
chips for entertainment PCs. TiVo is apparently working to make its
product cheaper and easier to use in anticipation for the
competition....
