The Boom Boom Multibox is a waterproof box containing a pair of battery-powered speakers and a stereo minijack. Just drop your iPod or discman inside it, plug in the speakers and snap it shut, and you've got a waterproof sound-system you can hang up in the shower. Next time I'm stateside, I'm ordering one of these -- I love having music in the shower (it'd also be cool for hotel rooms and the like). Link (via Gizmodo)

German company RapidSolution Software has released the Windows software Tunebite. Music tracks purchased from the Internet are copy-protected and involve important restrictions for many users when they are played back. With the option to re-record them while they are played, Tunebite legally provides the user with new music files without restrictions. This ensures that music bought from Apple iTunes, Sony Connect, AOL or other music platforms in the Internet can be played back and listened to from everywhere. [PRWEB Sep 13, 2004]

This visual music search engine lets you type in the name of an artist and it displays related artists. I thought I'd stump it by entering "Robert Crumb" (the cartoonist, who used to play tenor banjo in one of my favorite bands, The Cheap Suit Serenaders). I'll be damned if Music Plasma didn't display my very favorite musicians right next to his name. Link (Thanks, Anthony!)

Warner Music Tries (And Fails) To Make
Friends With Music Bloggers
08/16/2004 06:48 AM
MP3 blogs have been getting a lot of attention lately. The blogs, which usually focus on certain genres of music with the idea to highlight or expose certain new or obscure acts to a wider audience are growing in popularity. They often post an entire MP3 as well. However, it appears that some of the attention directed at these blogs made it to some executives at Warner Brothers Records. In a moment of enlightenment (considering typical record company reaction), instead of trying to shut these sites down, they decided to see what would happen if they embraced them. Someone from Warner contacted a number of these blogs, including an MP3 from a band they wanted to promote. This is somewhat surprising, as many of the sites certainly expected to get sued before they received MP3s from a major label. Still, the effort had its problems. The musician had already been featured months ago on some of the sites, and didn't fit at all with the focus of some of the other sites. Plus, the fear of looking like record company lackeys didn't appeal to many of the sites. Even worse, though, was that on the one site that did post the tracks, a number of out-of-place comments began appearing talking about how "awesome" the band was. A quick check of the IP addresses of the posters, though, showed they came from... Warner Brothers. So, while it's really great that they're actually trying to embrace these sorts of promotions, they still need to learn a thing or two about dealing with bloggers. Still, it's clearly a step forward from an industry that hasn't made many steps in that direction recently.

  • NY Post: Apple Tunes Up. Under the terms of some of the deals, the prices for some of the most popular singles could rise to $1.25, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. Songs have previously been priced at 99 cents across the board.
  • And, apparently, album prices will rise even higher than the CDs cost in stores. Now there's a way to encourage buyers. Let's see. Charging more on a medium where the manufacturing costs are zero -- now that's a way to encourage sales. Brilliant.
