Mike Kruckenberg's Blog: MySQL and PHP
Best Practices
06/22/2005 02:48 AM
Mike Kruckenberg has this post over on his blog today with his take on MySQL and PHP: Best Practices.

Jim Winstead speaks about good practice for MySQL and PHP at MySQL 2004. Looking down this it appears that I've just duplicated Jim's slides, not sure how much value that adds if you can just go an get the slides yourself.

Some of the items he mentions include things we've all heard over and over:

  • don't trust user data
  • watch for SQL injection points
  • benchmark overall page load times
  • don't use * (asterisk) in SQL selects
  • use the right storage for the right data (i.e. don't put files in the database)
  • and much more...

HTTP Best Practices 09/09/2004 04:26 PM
Rob Howard: We're going to try and get back to the point where full RSS feeds can be offered. While there are lot of good RSS clients out there, there are also plenty of bad ones that don't honor all the HTTP codes. To be fair, most of the HTTP headers involved are optional, and most developers are not accustomed to dealing with the protocol at this level. Despite being optional (which is fair given the range of applications HTTP supports), many of the HTTP features were explicitly designed to solve the problems posed by applications such as syndication.  After all, If implemented properly, the check for new content is an "infinitesimal" burden. What may help is guides and compliance test suites.

I have a three part suggestion for improving the quality and quantity of K5 article submissions: Give constructive editorial advice in the edit queue, and nothing else and nowhere else. Hold your topical comments until an article is voted up. Debate article's worthiness in the voting phase, and nothing else and nowhere else. These suggestions are not meant to be exhaustive; they focus on the simplest things we can do to improve the site while doing the most common activity on the site: posting responses to stories.

Web Form Best Practices

Web Form Best Practices 06/10/2002 11:26 AM
This is the first article in a series titled "Intelligent CMS", intended to shed some light upon CMS development using several popular Open Source tools, including PHP, the relational database system MySQL (http://www.mysql.com), and the Apache Webserver (http://httpd.apache.org). Drawing upon five years of experience building Web-based CMS applications using these tools, it is my intention and hope to provide you with at least a few useful tidbits of information that will ultimately save time, resources, and at times, tears when developing your own CMS applications.

In this inauguration article, we'll examine several such tidbits, specifically those which apply to Web forms. These tidbits take the form (no pun intended) of four "Best Practices", each tackling a form-related concept that I have seen to be problematic among burgeoning PHP developers. With that said, let's begin. -- Jason Gilmore.

Forest Practices From Above 04/08/2005 12:34 AM

Via Dave Shea, a visual lesson on modern forestry. I’ve actually visited a clear-cut or two, that’s some real ugliness. You don’t have to be a fanatical green, here in BC, to start having a real attitude problem about forestry companies and their pet politicians. Kind of like the Ents’ attitude towards Saruman’s Orcs. There has to be middle ground; I like living in a wooden house and reading words on paper. But look at those pictures; we can’t go on like this.

ACRL is frequently looked to and contacted for descriptions of effective practices in the academic library profession. The goal of the Effective Practices Clearinghouse is to recognize effective practices in academic libraries in areas such as programs, services, facilities, technology, and initiatives and share them so they are accessible to academic librarians and the entire education community. If your library has an effective practice to share, ACRL encourages you to complete and submit an Effective Practices Form. Your practice will be peer reviewed and considered for this site. Mime Email Message Class was Updated

Mime Email Message Class was Updated 01/24/2003 10:26 AM
Mime Email Message Class was Updated Although I like PHP Mailer a lot, I guess I should check this out: About: The MIME Email message class composes and sends email messages. It features user- definable headers and body parts, MIME encoding of text and HTML body parts with user-defined character encoding using quote-printable, support for attachments with automatic content type detection, support for multipart/alternative and multipart/related messages (for HTML messages with embedded images), encoding of message headers with user-defined character encoding using q-encoding, definition of the error delivery address setting the Return-Path header, and several sub-classes for sending messages by different methods: PHP mail() function, sendmail, qmail, SMTP. It also includes support for sending personalized bulk mail by replacing the message parts that differ for each recipient. Changes: Message bodies are now cached between successive deliveries to halve the time required to bulk-mail. Support was also added for creating and sending persistent bulk mail campaigns (which are stored in disk files). [_Go_] And as good as this looks for legitimate uses, it looks really good for generating spam campaigns. In particular messing with the encoding mechanisms is a good way around spam filters. Sigh.

Atom + MIME?

Atom + MIME? 05/07/2004 10:43 AM
I've mocked up what I think an Atom POST request for Tim Bray's How Fast is This Thing Growing? blog entry would look like using the MIME Multipart/Related Content-type.  I chose this particular entry as it has a title, a summary, full content, and two pictures - one displayed inline, and one by reference. I've posted two versions: a 7 bit safe version using Quoted-Printable and Base64 transfer encodings, and a 24% smaller 8 bit version using 8-bit and binary encodings.  Clients would be permitted to transmit any combinations of these.  Note: what you are seeing is the actual bits that would be transmitted - HTTP + MIME + XML + Atom + XHTML + PNG, complete with authentication. Unless somebody identifies a showstopper, I'll submit a proposal.
