BoingBoing's

provoked a
flurry of responses. Co-incidentally, I had just made myself
a
Technorati Trackback bookmarklet:

Technorati's roundup of posts commenting on the article.

Trackbacks in Winamp
03/13/2003 10:22 AMYou might have noticed that I show the current playing song from my
mp3 player here on my site. What you don't know is that I've been
using a hack for the past few months. For Winamp, I used the
DoSomething plugin to work through a local special template file which
would create another local flat file with song info. I'd then ftp the
output file to my server, which I loaded as an include. To get my mac
to the same, I had to setup a similar program, and both hacks ended up
constantly sending flat files to my server over insecure FTP. Kinda
sounds like overkill, doesn't it?
I kind of rushed to get this site's new design online before the
trip to Austin, and this past week at SXSW gave me about a bazillion
more ideas for the site. I'm going to write up all the tech I used,
how I built it, and why I did each part in a couple weeks when the
site is more feature complete, but I wanted to give you a preview of
what that'll be like.
One of the ideas I got yesterday at lunch was using trackback on
blogs to do Now Playing lists by just passing urls through mp3
players. I asked Ben and Mena a couple questions and they told me it
was 10 minutes work. With a few clicks and copy/paste jobs, I just
completed in a matter of minutes and it actually worked.
So Winamp is now sending trackbacks to my blog, and every time a
new song comes on, a new ping goes out, and my site changes. Here's
how to do it in Winamp 2.x:

Primitive Trackbacks
Primitive Trackbacks
11/15/2003 01:08 AMBefore
trackbacks
and
Technorati, webloggers
relied on referers. If you want to see who’s linking to you, you
looked at your logs, or your referers page if you have one.
So one of the habits I got into in my early days as a weblogger was to
always click on all the links on my weblog. This way I was assured of
sending at least one referer from my weblog to the pages I link to.
You could call it a primitive form of trackbacks.
The thing I’ve noticed is that many people don’t do it.
Via Technorati I find sites that link to me that I didn’t get a
referer for.
But I’m more likely to notice a link if I get a referer for it.
And I suspect many webloggers are the same way. (Not that Technorati
isn’t immensely valuable; it is.)
So... what I’m trying to say is it’s a good habit. When
you link to something, click on the link, that way you’ll know
you sent at least one referer. That way, what you wrote is more likely
to be seen by whoever you linked to.
(By the way, it occurs to me that weblog editors could consider adding
this as a feature. It could be automated. I’m not sure what I
think of that: there’s something not-quite-right about
automating referers.)

Trackbacks, Queries, and Encoding
05/26/2004 10:34 AMThis morning, I got a trackback from a Korean weblog.
Unfortunately, if you look at how a typical trackback is sent, you see
that character encoding information is not provided. Something to
think
about the next time you are tempted to think that you can get queries
for free. While both HTTP and XML provide mechanisms for
defining
encoding, support in widely deployed implementations is much better in
XML than in straight HTTP. URI's seem to be converging on UTF-8,
albeit
at an excruciatingly slow pace. Don't leave this to chance - if
you are defining a GenerativeNaming scheme today, make this explicit.
If
you are defining a protocol based on HTTP POST, encourage the use of
the
charset parameter on the Content-Type header. Require it if you
can.
Unicode Enabled Trackbacks
Unicode Enabled Trackbacks
06/30/2004 01:07 PMI've changed my weblogging software to send trackbacks in utf-8, and
to
try to respect the charset, if specified, on trackbacks received. This
involved four changes. ...

06/17/2005 04:33 PMMany have complained in recent months that my trackbacks were broken.
Well, they're mostly back. It took a while to fix, but they do show
up. Sometimes there's a delay, but that's by design (sort of). I'm
very, very close to starting a migration to WordPress but may not get
to that until sometime in July, based on my schedule for the next few

ETech come-down...
ETech come-down...
02/13/2004 08:03 PMRight then. Emerging Tech is
over and everyone's heads are full and we've all got a little bit of a
hangover from last night celebrations and socialising. I'm now back in
Los Angeles, having taken the train up from San Diego with the lovely
Phil and Anno. The train journey was filled
with little aggravating child noises and I was sitting in the wrong
direction so arrive in LA feeling queasy and dizzy. The train goes so
close to the Ocean that it's almost impossible not to want to
sacrifice all future working ambitions, get out at any convenient
station and run giggling into the water with warm sand between your
toes. Manfully, I have resisted.
I fly back to the UK on Sunday evening - arriving back sometime
around early lunchtime on Monday. I think I'm going to have to make an
appeal for a long weekend off work to try and digest everything that's
been going on and make sense of it. I think my understanding of the
event is even more blurry this year than last. In the meantime posting
is likely to be more erratic than usual...

Pecking at ETech?
02/11/2004 04:17 PMRussell says:
Interesting conference - too bad I wasn't there to get a longer
impression, but boy it seemed like there were some serious pecking
orders there.
And someone else I know there said this via IM last night:
You are missing some good conferences this week here,
although I have come to the conclusion that a lot of the bloggers are
pretty pompous.
I'm not sure what to make of that. Pecking
orders? Pompous? It bothers me, I guess.
That's odd. I
haven't noticed pecking or being pecked. Pompous? Nothing more or less
than I would expect. I wonder if I'm missing something? I'm generally
fairly sensitive about this sort of stuff. Anyone here at ETech have
any specific examples?
I DO think we're talking about blogging too much, but pecking?

02/12/2004 03:20 PM"No one owns who my
friends are". Great FOAF session today. Dan Brickley who created
FOAF, gave a good overview of what it is and how it is used.
I
enjoyed the idea of dating on
phones via bluetooth and FOAF.
This way you can date
somebody who is in the same room, same restaurant, immediately, with
the same interests as you... Great stuff.
Marc and Eric also OF COURSE showed People Aggregator. I really
like the idea of linking the friends I have in Orkut with the friends I have in Linked In, with the
friends I have in ...
I am not sure these networks will agree
to share their databases with you (or anybody else), Marc, but let's
see what happens. I agree on the fact that if we all own our own
identity on a FOAF file, it is better than having to fill-it in in 10
different networks...
Also saw a demo of NewsMonster, it is an RSS
reader that supports FOAF. Nice work, John. "There is too many social
networks. You do not own my data, I do. "
John is also working
on "Exportster", which is a plugin that should be ready within a
month. Its goal is to be able to export the data from the different
networks and sync them.
"We export the data from social
networks and sync them all, so that there is one macro level FOAF
file, in order to have a unified data model."
Tribe also
announced that they support FOAF.
Greg Elin showed fotonotes.net that is
coordinating a semantic photo project which is exploring the issues
combining FOAF and RDF for photos, impressive.
Marc Powell
talked briefly about
Indyvoter.org, "injecting the virus of political dialogue into
online social networks", also supporting FOAF. [Loïc Le Meur's WebLog]

of things you might say on your homepage. There are currently 2M FOAF

Citizen journalism, one-handed department
"There has been so much debate over whether bloggers are journalists,
the real issue has been obscured: are IRC chatters journalists? Mr.
Sun has done some careful investigation and found that the IRC
conversation logged below preceded the supposed revolutionizing of
journalism by bloggers." Totally unrelated to the conference, but a
funny reminder that I don't read Mr. Sun enough.
Ten Hour Takeover
"Ten Hour Takeover is your chance to choose the music Radio 1 plays."
The BBC asked listeners to send a text message song request. Ten hours
of music totally driven by the listening public. Awesome.
"Average UK adult listens to 24 hours of radio a week" according to
Paul in the presentation, BBC Programme Information Pages: An
Architecture for an On-Demand World. Wow. That's amazing. For
comparison, I found this document about American teenage radio habits
stating that US young adults agee 12-17 listen to an average of 13.5
hours of radio a week. Maybe it's because we've got more Clear Channel
and they've got Radio 1?

Etech is regarded by many as the best tech conference of the year,
always in step with the latest creations and aspirations of the alpha

the Peer-to-Peer Conference in early 2001 and P2P & Web Services in
late 2001 to the current multi-tracked annual conference starting two
years ago. (Incidentally, the Creative Commons concept was in

Matt

or better yet our parti

2004 is going on in Japan until Friday, and there are plenty of new
product demonstrations as well as those currently in development on
display. This year's hot sheet includes NTT DoCoMo's "UbiButton," a
device similar in form factor to a wristwatch. By detecting the shock
waves in the arm created by a simple snapping of the fingers, a switch
is flipped that can, for example, turn a light on and off. In other
words, DoCoMo has glorified The Clapper to now be called The Snapper.
Actually, I know a couple people that can't snap their fingers...what
the hell are they supposed to do? [Uhm, clap? - ed] Other
highlights from the convention included a working model of a Bluetooth
pen, and DDI Pocket's "Jacketphone," a SD card sized PHS module.

03/06/2004 02:03 AMI'm finally getting DSL :D and I'm curious as to whether I should hook
up a wireless network for it instead of a conventional wired network?
My dad has a new laptop with wireless capabilities and so he wants to
work with that, but my concern is that it will slow down the speed of
the DSL. Is wireless any slower than a wired network, and if it is, is
it enough to make a difference to internet performance?

Fear Of An Open Wireless Network
Fear Of An Open Wireless Network
04/04/2005 06:22 AMAs mobile phones get
more and more sophisticated for handling data, more people are
waking up to reasons why the mobile data industry is still being held
back, compared to the regular internet. Once again, it's a story
about control. The mobile carriers
still think they
can control everything -- from the devices that people use to the
applications, services and connections offered via those phones. The
carriers will justify their position on each of these -- but people
already know what to expect in buying a regular computer and getting
on the regular internet -- and it doesn't involve having to buy a
specific computer that's made to work with your ISP which has some
special content and features, but which can't do everything that
someone else's computer can. The computer/internet world works
because it's not controlled by one party -- and the faster the
carriers realize this, the faster they'll get wireless data adoption.

Sweden to Get Broadband Wireless Network
Sweden to Get Broadband Wireless Network
08/27/2004 01:31 PMUsing EU funds, TeliaSonera will help build a broadband wireless
network in a region of Sweden that is without broadband access: The
network will be built with so-called "pre-WiMax" equipment, or gear
that hasn't been certified WiMax but may receive certification once
that process begins. This is precisely the type of network that many
experts say WiMax is ideal for--covering remote areas that aren't
served by wired broadband. Ultimately, such networks could be built in
developing nations but initially the networks and products may not be
inexpensive enough to serve such markets....
