FireWire Depot announced on Wednesday the arrival of four new products: the Fi reWire 800 CardBus PCMCIA adapter (US$89.99), the 3- port FireWire 800 repeater/hub ($89.99), the 3- port FireWire 800 PCI card adapter ($67.99) and the Fi reWire 800/USB 2.0 combo to IDE bridge board ($84.95). The CardBus PCMCIA adapter features two 9-pin FireWire 800 ports, one 6-pin FireWire 400 port and a DC input power connector. It comes with one FireWire 400 cable and one FireWire 800 cable, requiring Mac OS 9.x or Mac OS 10.x for the former and Mac OS X v10.2.4 or higher for the latter. The adapter also works only with an open 32-bit CardBus slot.

Medea Corp. on Tuesday announced that it's shipping its G-RAID, a new hardware-based RAID system for Macs and PCs. The two-drive solution features two FireWire 800 ports, one FireWire 400 port, and is available in storage capacities ranging from 160GB to 500GB at prices ranging from US$299 to $759 depending on capacity. The G-RAID is clad in an aluminum chassis that complements the Power Mac G5's and PowerBook's industrial designs. Medea has positioned the G-RAID as an external storage solution for video editing professionals working in SD, HDV and DV formats.

The device measures three inches long and is available in capacities ranging from 128MB to 1GB, with prices ranging from US$69.95 to $279.95 depending on capacity. The Fire Flash comes with a four-pin adapter for computers that need it, and a desktop docking station.

MCE Technologies on Monday shipped Lucid M8X, a portable FireWire 400 DVD drive compatible with DVD+/-R/RW and CD-R/RW media, including Dual-Layer DVD+R discs. It can write Dual-Layer media at 2.4x speed and the various flavors of single-layer DVD discs at 8x speed, with CD-R and CR-RW burn speeds as fast as 24x. It can draw power over any FireWire port except those that are added on through a CardBus or PCI slot; the latter requires an AC adapter, which is sold separately. The Lucid M8X sells for US$279 and requires Mac OS X v10.3.6. Roxio Toast Lite software is included.

It's built with an auto-loading mechanism that enables up to 1.6 terabytes (TB) of storage capacity using ten VXA 160GB tape cartridges. The system comes with a rack mount kit, cables, backup software and a cleaning tape, as well as a copy of Dantz's Retrospect Workgroup/Single Server backup software.

FireWire Depot has introduced the Newnex FireNEX-MX, an optical repeater for transmitting FireWire 400 and 800 data signals over multi mode optical fiber cable up to 3,280 feet long. It's slightly larger than a deck of cards and contains two 6-pin FireWire 400 ports and one FireWire 800 port. According to the FireWire Depot Web site, the Newnex FireNEX-MX will be in stock on Oct. 11 for US$850, with optical cables available in lengths from 32 to 3,280 feet, starting at $65.

Lime Wire LLC has released LimeWire 4.0, a major new release of their peer-to-peer file sharing software for multiple platforms including Mac OS X. New features include an improved interface, integration with iTunes, better search results, a "What's New" feature, search drill down results, faster connections on startup, proxy support, a new search progress bar and more. Lime Wire LLC also vaunts LimeWire's lack of included "spyware," or software code that collects personal information for market research. LimeWire is available in a free Basic version and US$18.88 Pro version.
