Verizon Admits It Plans To Sell Fiber
Access To Other ISPs

Verizon Admits It Plans To Sell Fiber
Access To Other ISPs
03/14/2005 05:27 PM
While Verizon has been threa tened to withhold fiber if the FCC forced them to share lines, that doesn't mean they're against selling those lines. Verizon has admitted (via Broadband Reports) that they're in discussions with various ISPs about offering them access to the lines. The article makes it sound like no one expected this to happen -- but that's not true. A lot of people expected them to have this option, but to price it at ridiculous rates that had little to do with the actual costs. The problem was never that Verizon didn't want to sell access to fiber lines -- just that they didn't want the government setting the price.

MSN Japan to offer Blog service

MSN Japan to offer Blog service 08/05/2004 12:17 AM
Thanks SYBOLD. According to the report at Reuters, MSN Japan, joining hands with local content provider, T.O.S Co. Ltd., will launch a Blogging service by next week.

The Blogging culture has in deed made its impression to Microsoft's chairman, Bill Gates whom hinted not long ago that he too, could start blogging. MSN hopes to compete with Google's Blogger and expected one million users in the first year.

Apart from supporting the overwhelming demands in the country where 9 out of 10 houses are web-enabled, MSN Japan is also hoping to use this service as advertising medium.

"Magazines, for example, cannot hit a break-even point if the circulation is below 100,000. We target one million users to be recognized as an effective advertising vehicle," said MSN Japan GM, Yoshie Furukawa.

The service, according to Furukawa, will differentiate from others by supporting mobile devices to allow users to read or update their blog on mobile phones.

It is still unclear whether the service will also be offered in other countries.

Yahoo Japan launches blog tool

Yahoo Japan, owned mostly by Softbank and partly by Yahoo, on Tuesday launched a test, or "beta," version of Yahoo Japan Blogs, a free service that lets users post blogs and up to 2GB of images, comment on other blogs, and associate their blogs with animated representations of users known as avatars.

The launch could have implications for Yahoo users in the United States, too. Yahoo's Asian blogging services are striking in that they precede any offerings or previews by Yahoo for its flagship portal. And Yahoo's lateness to the blogging game is all the more notable thanks to significant investment by Yahoo's main portal competitors, including Google, MSN and AOL.
