P2P Wins Court Battle in France

P2P Wins Court Battle in France 03/14/2005 04:34 PM
I take back some of things I had thought about our friends across the Atlantic. A French Appeal Court ruled that a countryman who downloaded 500 movies via P2P was within his rights because he used them for private viewing, not distributing or selling them to the public. He also paid tax on the blank media he recorded it on. No harm, no foul said the courts. Now that is a ruling that makes sense, common sense. Viva Le France! If you can read French, you can find the details on this website.

Musicologist wins copyright battle over
300-year-old works

Musicologist wins copyright battle over
300-year-old works
07/17/2004 11:19 AM
BoingBoing reader John says:
Dr. Sawkins, a musicologist, has won a copyright battle in Britain over a 300 year old piece of music, "Music for the Sun King" by Michel-Richard de Lalande. I understand that particular editions of literature, for example, are often copyrighted: the layout, the footnotes, etc, are all original. But the actual editorial choices- what to include, how to conflate contradictory texts- I had assumed were not copyrightable. By the logic of this argument, a good editorial choice made in one edition of a piece of music can be seen as infringing on the same choice made in another edition.

German Walkman Inventor Wins Battle

German Walkman Inventor Wins Battle
Against Sony, Fixes Gaze on Apple
06/07/2004 12:09 PM

walkman_wm1.jpg imageGerman inventor Andreas Pavel has just settled a 20 year court battle with Sony over the origins of the Walkman, a device Pavel claimed to have patented in 1977. While Sony has spent the better part of two decades trying to ignore his claims of invention (despite the fact they paid him royalty fees for the first few years of the device's life), Pavel's near bankruptcy after a 3.7 million dollar court battle was finally rewarded by a confidential agreement in which Pavel was reportedly paid off to the tune of several million euros. Pavel, cock of the walk, is now planning to take a swipe at Apple, whose iPod has become the Walkman of this generation. Even better, Pavel has another patent in the wings: a 1989 US filing for a technology that combines the features of a portable audio player and a mobile phone. That patent will be decided on 'soon.'

Destroy Troy

Destroy Troy 07/05/2004 05:49 PM

When I wake up I usually find some interesting remains in my mind.  It's as if the brain forgot to flush the cache when I awake.  This morning it was the thought that the word 'destroy' originated from the fall of Troy.  So to destroy is to suffer the same fate as the city of Troy did.

Is this true?  Dictionaries I looked up didn't list Troy as the origin of the word.  Searching Google returns many pages that mention the city of Troy and the word destory together yet none seems to suggest there there might be a closer relationship between the word and the name.

Seems unlikely though.  The concept of destruction has a long history and, while the destruction of Troy took place long time ago, use of the word 'destroy' to mean 'do the same as what was done to Troy' would require a lot of story telling.

A: Destroy that city by nightfall!
B: Do what?
A: Destroy!  Turn it into rubble like Troy.
B: Troy?  What's that?
A: *sigh* You never heard about Troy?  Giant Horse?
B: Uh, no.  Why don't you tell us?

More likely, the word is related to the word 'destruction', removal of structures, but it's fun to play with words anyway.

Troy in 15 (very funny) minutes

Troy in 15 (very funny) minutes 05/20/2004 01:05 AM
After the sixth hour of Troy, the new Arm Pitt Men in Skirts epic, I started to remember just how friggin' big that copy of the Iliad I had was. Big. Big, big book. Loooong movie.

So it's a good thing that this blogger has produced a Troy-in-fifteen-minutes abridgement. You know, I like it as much as the original!

AGAMEMNON: Look, there's no reason for me to slaughter thousands of your men. You pick out your best soldier, and I pick out mine.

KING OF THESSALY: Deal. [turns to his army] SOME GUYYYYY!

THESSALIAN ARMY: SOME! GUY! SOME! GUY! SOME! GUY!

Some Guy breaks through the crowd. His neck resembles an Easter ham and his spear is the size of a telephone pole.

SOME GUY: RAAAAAAAAA!

AGAMEMNON [turning to his army]: ACHILLEEEEEES!

GREEK ARMY: . . .

AGAMEMNON: . . .

Hut of Wanton Nudity, Some Village

BOY: OMG Achilles you're late you gotta get up Achilles OMG!

ACHILLES: Dude, I just nailed twins. Call me in the morning.

HELEN [weepy]: I can’t wear it because I’m sort of already married to that other guy but we’ve been doing the royal nasty for a week already anyway and you’re going to leave tomorrow and WAHHHHH.
PARIS: You could stow away and come with me and start a war that will end up killing 90% of the cast and totally be the downfall of my people and my kingdom!
HELEN: *sniff* I think… that’s the sweetest thing anyone’s ever said to me.
