I See Geek People 03/20/2003 05:31 PM

I was looking for something a few minutes ago and... well, the results speak for themselves. Do a search for anything on Amazon.com - and they'll tell you where to find it. "See 'the finest breast' on Page 3 of the menu at Cafe Starbucks." / "See 'my wife' on Page 53 of Things You Never Knew Existed." / "See 'baby batter' on Page 149 of Macgill Discount School Nurse Supplies." / See 'colored farts' on Index 3 of Source Equipment." / "See 'your mom' on Page 105 of Dressler's Dog Supplies-All Breed Dog Specialty." / "See 'your pubic hair' on Page 18 of Herbal Healer Academy Natural Medicine Supply." / "See 'horny protozoa' on Page 88 of American 3B Scientific 2002 mail-order catalog." / "See 'someone happier than me' on Page 5 of Boltz Steel Furniture-Steel Style." What do YOU see?...

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek
problems
09/21/2004 06:38 AM

The building I work in does not receive Radio receptions real good. The guys and I in the office like to listen to a particular radio show and we knocked our heads together for a while trying to figure out how to improve the reception. Fixing the reception problem proved to be impossible but we did find a geeks way to fix the problem.

I purchased Replay Radio and set it up at home to record the network stream of the program. It saves the recorded stream in MP3 format every 30 minutes and dumps it in a directory that I have mapped to a FTP server. I have a standard FTP client running on my desktop that downloads the MP3 to my laptop which is connected to the network and we load the MP3 up and listen to the program time delay.

My work does not allow for streaming audio. So to avoid confusion I asked permission to do this via our IT department and promised to keep the file sizes under control. They thought it was cool and gave the thumbs up. It worked out so well that several departments do the same thing and we have 2-3 national talk radio programs to listen to each day. Albeit time delay but it works. [Replay Radio]

" Replay Radio is an incredibly easy way to record radio broadcasts. It's like a "TiVo™ DVR" for the radio. Just pick your favorite radio show, or select a station and a time range, and Replay Radio records it for you. Hundreds of shows and stations are pre-programmed, making recording as easy as point and click."

Congrats to Roland and Boris and.....

They've just launched Bryght - a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving there.

Vancouver is hot.

Here's Roland's post....

Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this one. Yes, we are all Bryght guys :-) !

We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required, no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght site, please contact us.

Whither StreamLine you might ask? StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging platform.

Lily Cheng from Microsoft Research is talking about how people represent themselves on line. The closer the friends, the fuzzier they want the representations. We need to make social tools fluid enough to account for the way people's lives change. We need easy access to friends and people important to us. We want sponatenous interactions. Lily's group went to a mall and asked people to draw their social interactions, and gots lots of circles and lines. Microsoft studied this and built a "personal map" that clusters people based on who they send email to (TO and CC) and how...

So I'm eating dinner and half-heartedly watching junk TiVo recorded, including this episode of Landscaper's Challenge (in case you're wondering, it's a homeowner thing), and I'm not actually watching but listening kind of and I hear the client make some jokes and I know that I know that voice from somewhere. I start watching it intently and racking my brain for a few minutes. Where have I heard that before? Books on tape? Narrator in a car commercial? Cartoon voice? And then it hits me: I've heard this guy "Al" dozens of times, but I've never seen him before. He does the commentary tracks on all the Simpson's DVDs.

It was show writer/director Al Jean getting his backyard done.

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek 09/20/2004 02:53 AM

My wife and I went to a work related party last night which turned out to be pretty boring. So much for the $70.00 spent on tickets. We left early and knew that the sitter was good to go decided to drop in on a friend of hers.

We get to her house and I am admiring her house and see a big Master Degree in Education hanging over her computer. I was surprised to see it actually as we have known her for a while and she had never mentioned it. Anyway to make a long story short she says hey my PC is having problems can you look at it.

You guessed it 2 hours later and much under breath cursing I give up and tell her I need to take it home or we can just pull the restore disk out and start from scratch. I get this deer in the headlights look when I explain that her computer has been hijacked and is infected with nearly every piece of spyware known to man.

1. Virus Definitions 2 years old
2. She had never run Windows Update.
3. Systems is plugged directly into cable modem
4. No Spyware detection software
5. No Firewall

Remember now she has a Masters Degree in Education. She commented I should open a business and fix peoples computers like hers. I guess my 21+ years working with advanced electronics now makes me qualified to fix computers. I suppose I could charge her $750.00 for a days worth of work. All I could do was smile and say drop it by the house and I will get it fixed for you...

All my wife could say when we left was sorry. I hate stupid educated people. Sometimes being a geek sucks.

From geek to chef

From geek to chef 09/14/2004 12:46 PM
This past May, when I decided to go on sabbatical I wrote that I needed a break because: I had no perspective on anything, I was so deep into my world of weblogs and tech that I didn't have much sense of what was going on outside of my geek circles... I've been burning my candle at both ends for years now, and decided it was time to stop. Emotionally I was drained. Physically I was drained. But that wasn't the full truth of it, because there was something I'd been feeling that I wasn't quite able to admit. It's taken me several months of time away from computers and tech and geeks to accept the fact that computers and technology are not my passion. My interest in the web and tech was always more about people. With weblogs, it was making it possible for everyone to write online and share and communicate. And while I was doing it, I really did care very deeply about my work -- the products we were creating, the people for whom they were built, and the people who worked with me to build them. As my career progressed, I pushed myself to be more visible as a technology speaker, dabbled at freelance writing, and started another tech company. But something was always missing, and I've realized that was true passion for what I was doing. So last night I ended my sabbatical and began my new career doing something I've always felt passionate about: cooking. I'm working in the kitchen of a restaurant called Fifty-Six Union (mentioned at the bottom of thisFeasting on Nantucket article) here on Nantucket. Yesterday at 3 PM I put on my black chef's clogs, my black pants and white t-shirt, pulled my Red Sox cap over my hair and got to work peeling and deveining shrimp. Seven hours later, sweatily scrubbing the kitchen floors, I was still smiling. I've learned a lot this summer during my sabbatical but it all can be summarized in three words: follow your heart.

Geek Ballgame?

Geek Ballgame? 04/09/2004 04:05 PM
I’m going to be in the Bay Area a couple of days this week, and it looks like I might be able to get out a bit Tuesday evening. I was thinking about a geek dinner or something but then noticed that the A’s are hosting Texas that evening. I’ve never been to see them, but I’ve been told that it’s a nice park. On the other hand, on the map it looks like a long way to go; the game’s at 7:05. If I’m going to have to knock off real early to make the game, that’s not realistic. So... is this a practical idea? Anyone else interested?

What makes a geek?

What makes a geek? 05/06/2004 09:52 PM

Meri has a great post up entitled Because We Are Geeks, which highlights the differences between geeks and the rest of the world and asks if geeks are really suited to designing and marketing products for non-geeks.

I'll openly admit that I'm frequently baffled by non-geeks. How could anyone not want a USB Devil Duckie? More to the point, I've often wandered what it is that makes some people more inclined to technical pursuits than others. Is it something you've born with, or something that you pick up from your surroundings? I attribute a lot of my geekiness to exposure to both Lego technic and a C64 from an early age, but would I still have been drawn towards geeky endeavours if I'd spent my childhood kicking a football around instead? It's nice to know that Google's Larry Page was influenced by lego as well.

Do IT workers dream of electric sheep? This hilarious site compiles the nightmares and dreams of coders.
One of the scariest nightmares I've had in the past decade or so was about me being stuck in a Nethack dungeon. Everything was green on black (I'd been playing on a Facit VT100-clone) and in 7-bit ASCII. I distinctly remember being chased by a lower-case x, scared out of my wits and at the same time feeling ashamed of being such a wimp that a mere grid bug was a threat.

The Geek Squad Revisited

The Geek Squad Revisited 06/22/2005 01:56 AM

Pe rplexed consumers dial up tech 'geeks': Our original post on the Geek Squad is one of our most active. This is an article about the surge in computer support jobs in general, and it includes this bit on the Geek Squad:

Best Buy last week said it hired 1,500 more employees for its "Geek Squad," a team of for-hire tech-support staffers. The retail giant now has about 8,000 staffers taking phone calls, fixing electronics brought to stores, and traveling to homes and offices to solve problems. Best Buy hopes to have 12,000 next year.

That's 4,000 most agents in the next year — get your resumes in, people.

And remember that desktop support is less likely to be offshored that programming and network administration because it's so much more helpful to have someone right there to (1) fix your problem, and (2) show you how to prevent it in the future. I'm thinking these jobs would be a little more secure than others in IT.

Who you gonna call "The geek squad
that's who!"

Who you gonna call "The geek squad
that's who!"

Seems that Best Buy has some geeks dressed like geeks that go around in a VW of all cars and make house calls to fix peoples sick computers. From the prices that Best Buy is getting for these house calls I think I need to start free-lancing. But seriously I have spent 100's of hours in people homes fixing their computers as a favor while trying to get them clued in so I will never have to come back..
Usually when I say give me your credit card so I can buy a Antivirus Software and a Firewall for their machines that have been sitting wide open on the net for several years it gets their attention. Especially when I tell them that their machines have been hacked for several years. [SFGate]
