Web Page Reconstruction with CSS

Web Page Reconstruction with CSS

Web Page Reconstruction with CSS 07/11/2002 01:06 PM

Contemporary CSS methods do win a victory in a head-to-head match based on file sizes. But more importantly, using CSS for pure presentation allows the removal of all spacer GIFs, HTML tables, and a total of 31 images! The benefits of dropping those methods are sizable savings by themselves. Couple these savings with the added bonus of valid markup that will work in standards compliant Web devices, and it's very clear that CSS is the way to go. -- By Christopher Schmitt

A few days ago, we had Top Ten Web Performance Tuning Tips where Patrick Killelea said that one of the things slowing down the web is style sheets. Who's right?

Outsourcing the reconstruction

Outsourcing the reconstruction 07/01/2004 02:17 PM
Outsourcing comes to Iraq. Interesting article from the WP (login req'd, get one here) about workers from countries such as India and South Korea, subcontracted by American companies, notably the ever-infamous Halliburtun. Effectively turned into indentured servants, these workers not only endure work conditions that American workers would never tolerate, but they do it in a war zone. "Rep. Janice D. Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said contractors' use of multiple layers of subcontracts makes it difficult for the U.S. government to ensure the fair treatment of the workers it effectively employs."

Iraqi Reconstruction Contracts 12/09/2003 09:44 PM
Iraq Reconstruction Contracts Limited To Coalition Countries In a Determination & Findings[pdf] document dated Dec. 5, the Administration outlines why it is "essential" to national security to limit New-Texas reconstruction contracts to companies based in pro-iraq-war countries. As expected, the terrorist-led corporations of Canada, Germany, France, Russian and China are not allowed to bid. (Despite years of previous work in Iraq for many of these companies). Hello Halliburton, goodbye Schlumberger. Mr Bush, is this uniting or dividing?

Sony Hi-MD Memory Card Reader

Sony Hi-MD Memory Card Reader 08/10/2004 09:26 PM

himd_memory imageSony makes an interesting attempt at pushing their new Hi-MD format (for "High Capacity MiniDisc"), which for those of you that don't know, has a 1 gigabyte capacity. It's called the "MCMD-R1," and for good reason. What reason that is, I do not know. The aptly named device, or whatever, attaches to a Hi-MD recorder via a USB cable. Pushing the "copy" button, images will be copied from a memory card to the Hi-MD disc. An interesting idea, but I personally find the numerous drawbacks to be...drawbacky. First of all, it apparently only does images. You can't connect even it to a PC's USB port - this makes the sub $80 device quite expensive. Also, the reader does support nearly every media under the sun, but it can only read from one card at a time.

If I were Sony, I'd instead make this into a CD drive. You could press the button, and it would copy the disc's contents onto a Hi-MD. But this is on the very fringes of legality as we know it. Oh well.

RSS Sync is a Pocket PC 2003 ActiveSync Extension. It synchronizes RSS/RDF news to your PDA - effectively creating an offline newsreader. The sync program updates RSS data at scheduled intervals. Data is then synchronized to the PDA, where it can be viewed in the RSS Viewer aggregator. The headlines are stored in a small database on the PDA, so you can carry the information with you anywhere and examine it without being connected on the internet. When a link to a website is provided with the RSS article, you can activate it and be redirected to a web-browser, which connects and retrieves the web-site online.
