Are you considering a career in
Advertising?
03/20/2003 04:22 PM

Are you considering a career in Advertising, or perhaps you have just been offered your first Agency job? Perhaps you have been in advertising for a few months and are starting to grow jaded with this industry. Who ever you are, I would like to present this negative impression of life in the Ad business. My life working for an ad-agency was not all bad - in fact there were some quite amusing moments. However as a choice of career, I would not recommend this sector.

Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different

Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different
08/03/2004 12:32 PM
Apparently, marketers are just now figuring out that browsing and searching are two different modes of web surfing, and people will t reat ads differently in each situation. Some pointed this out quit e a while ago, but thanks to Google and Overture promoting contextually matched ads as somehow being just like search ads, many advertisers expected similar results -- which they're not getting at all. So, now, some advertisers seem to be fighting back and are telling Google and Overture that it's about time they separated out the two forms of advertising and let the advertisers work each campaign separately. It appears that Overture has started to move in this direction, but Google continues to insist that there's no reason to treat the ads differently.

Webl0gging about your job and career

Webl0gging about your job and career 06/22/2004 01:12 AM

I do not talk about my regular job on this or my private website as I know my employer would not be real happy about it. But I have been thinking about writing on a particular facet of my Job that my employer probably would not have any issue with. I have had a domain for a couple of years that fits perfectly with the subject I would like to write about. Their are a few other sites out their that attempt to draw the same audience that I would like and I know that I could affect their traffic in a negative way. I have been working on a set of self imposed censorship rules after all the last thing I want to do is write about something that could cause my employer embarrassment.

Some have been fired from their jobs and I personally like mine enough that I would censor myself to protect my job. This may seem crazy to some people but I am not stupid. As I like my job and I like the paycheck. Unfortunately it is a catch 22 I hope that someone someday has the vision to generate a policy document spelling out what is ok and what isnt as I am sure companies like Microsoft have. Having a Backup Career Plan

Having a Backup Career Plan 07/06/2004 11:52 PM
It's odd. I don't know if it's the field of work I'm in or not, but a high percentage of folks that I know reasonably well all seem to have what I call a "backup career plan" in mind. Some of them are actively working on their plan--going back to school part or full-time, getting additional training, etc. Others haven't made any concrete moves yet but seem to talk about it more and more. There's this [usually] unspoken sense that...

Dick's from-the-grave career in
Hollywood

Dick's from-the-grave career in
Hollywood
11/19/2003 02:46 AM
With Paycheck (a new John Woo movie based on a Philip K Dick story) opening on Christmas, the time is right for Wired to run a long feature on Dick's life and death, and his posthumous career as a film-writer. I have to confess that I prefer the movies built on Dick's work to the work itself, which I often find clumsily written, thinly characterized, and incoherently plotted -- but when streamlined by a screenwriter and acted out by a cast of talented actors and designed by a stylish director, Dick's work really shines.
Isa and her older half-sister, Laura Leslie, are upstanding Bay Area citizens, both intelligent and obviously competent. Together with their younger half-brother, Chris, who works as a martial arts instructor in Southern California, they control their father's legacy. Russell Galen advises them from New York. The four take their stewardship seriously: They're fine with repackaging a novel to tie in with a movie, for example, but novelizations of short stories are out. And thanks to Vintage Books, every word of his fiction will soon be in print - as you'd expect for an author who's now taught in colleges and cited by the French post-structuralist philosopher Jean Baudrillard.

As for film deals, the estate has become increasingly choosy. "We sort of feel like we have to protect Philip K. Dick's brand image," says Galen. "So we set very, very high prices, and we'll only do business with people who are established. It's ironic, because the films that created the phenomenon started with options that were granted to struggling filmmakers. Today, we shun people like that." Not every movie based on Dick's writings has been a hit: The 1996 film Screamers, starring Peter Weller, and last year's Imposter, with Gary Sinise in the lead, grossed only $12 million between them. "But in Hollywood, what matters is getting the movie made," explains Galen. "If somebody options a story and it's not made, that spoils the track record."

What car for a young man starting a
career in Los Angeles?

What car for a young man starting a
career in Los Angeles?
03/17/2005 03:24 AM

A young friend is starting a career in Los Angeles.  His goals are the following:

  • fun to drive
  • favorably impress superiors at work
  • appeal to single women
  • spend less than $60,000 and ideally much less

What should he buy?

[Update:  I hadn't wanted to prejudice anyone so I withheld my suggestion... the new Ford Mustang convertible.  He will be in California, where driving on the backroads in a convertible can be a lot of fun.  The fanciest V6 convertible lists for only $25,000.  There is a small back seat for a Golden Retriever.  The solid rear axle isn't an issue considering that California has no potholes.  He doesn't need the big V8 engine because California traffic is generally so heavy that he'll be lucky to hit 30 mph.  To me this is a fun car that doesn't say "I'm trying to impress you with my wealth" (which is always a failure in LA because there is always someone richer in the next lane with a $100,000+ car).  What do folks think of the Mustang idea?  Am I totally out of touch with youth?]

Tribe and Career Builder deal

Tribe and Career Builder deal 03/08/2004 11:26 PM

Partnerships, acquisitions, and new service launches continue to heat up in the social networking space — Are all of these moves in the “best” interest of the communities these YASNs serve? I hear echoes of dana boyd speaking of “context” and “best” as being “in the eye of the beholder.”

tribeslogoSAN FRANCISCO, March 1 /PRNewswire/ — Tribe Networks, a company
pioneering a new approach to the online classifieds business through its popular Web site http://www.tribe.net, today announced a partnership with CareerBuilder.com, a leading online career site with over 16 million monthly unique visitors and more than 400,000 continuously updated jobs.  Through this relationship, Tribe.net’s users will be able to access CareerBuilder.com’s job postings from over 25,000 top employers and leverage their own social and
affinity networks to maximize job search efforts.

According to CareerBuilder.com’s “Plans for 2004” survey completed in
December 2003, 40 percent of workers said they plan to change jobs this year. Workers also revealed that the top three methods they use for finding new positions are newspaper classifieds, online career sites and networking — making the relationship between Tribe.net and CareerBuilder.com a natural fit.

...“Our mission is to give people a better way to leverage their own networks to connect with life-changing opportunities big and small,” said Mark Pincus, CEO of Tribe Networks.  “By partnering with CareerBuilder.com and joining its network of partners, we can offer a critical mass of local job listings that matter to our audience.”
