Helping people start bl0gs
06/11/2004 11:11 AMI've helped 2 friends of mine start blogs in the past year: Jay and
Melina (I don't even remember her URL). They don't blog much though,
think they aren't getting that bloggin' feeling. Jay sends me URL's
sometimes that I tell him he should put on his blog instead.
What are your experiences with helping people start blogs?

The Start of Library Conference Blogs?

"Information Today, Inc. editors will be blogging the news and
events live from Online Information 2003 in London. Bookmark this site

and hear about all of the show action directly from the
information industry's leading editors." [via Peter Scott's Library
Blog]
Excellent - library conferences finally start to catch up! And InfoToday is smart enough to give
the blog its own domain name. We're still missing the collaborative,
aggregate library conference blog, but we're getting there.
Unfortunately, that won't really happen until we get open WiFi at
these conferences. At the Internet Librarian
conference, Liz Lawley
noted the lack of open notebook computers in the audience. I did, too,
but I chalked this up in part to the lack of wireless. No need for me
to lug around a disconnected brick. So wil InfoToday and/or their
conference sponsors figure this out and distinguish their conferences
from other library-related ones?
Suggestion: use LISFeeds to
create an feed for the site so that we RSS
bigots can follow the blog!

Blogs are 'unsourced rantings' says former NY Times
editor
From the 'Department of Supreme Irony' comes a statement by Howell
Raines (the former Executive Editor of the New York Times) that blogging is 'unsourced ranting' (the link
is to a News.com article that links to an Atlantic Monthly article
that you have to subscribe to in order to view).
First of all, Raines' statement is so completely ludicrous as to be
laughable. Weblogs have a lot of shortcomings, but lack of sourcing
isn't one of them. In fact, if you want to criticize weblogs you would
do better to complain about the excess of linking to other sources and
the dearth of original material. But the more important point is the
one filled with irony. Here is Howell Raines, who lost his job at the
NYT because he was at the helm during the Jayson Blair scandal,
complaining about problems with 'sourcing.' You remember the Jayson Blair scandal don't
you? He was a young rising star reporter who was Raines' 'golden boy'
at the Times. It turned that the way that he rose quickly was by not
wasting time doing the usual investigative grunt work; instead he
completely fabricated stories and sources.

“Blogging is
the Same as Stamp Collecting for the Semi-Retired”
I still keep running into references to New York Times’
technology reporter John Markoff’s off-handed remarks that he
does a blog, it’s called “Newyorktimes.com” In a
recent conversation he told me that as far as he was concerned
blogging is essentially the same as “stamp collecting” for
the semi-retired.
We should have "funniest
characterization of blogging by New York Times people" awards.

I am cleaning up my blogroll just now, self-discovering
blog feeds one by

apparently gone so
I have removed them for now. This feels too much like
housecleaning. Urgh.

Choo-choo!
This is how a highly paid, amazingly creative, and supposedly
well-respected
consultant/visionary/guru spends the last day of a year. My
wife and I are not
going anywhere tonight which leaves us wondering what we are going
to eat for dinner.
I don't really care what I eat -- I hardly eat much of anything --
but my wife defines
her life by what she ate and where she went. So I care by
proxy.

OhmyNews is reporting that
an NGO group in Korea (sorry, their name is difficult to
translate) has launched
an international campaign named “Defeat Bush Network”
to defeat Bush in
the upcoming election. Here is a picture of some Indians
holding Defeat
Bush Network tabloids that were handed out in Moombai (?),
India in their efforts
to get citizens of other countries involved.
Looks like Bush loses by one vote in this group
While non-Americans trying to influence the outcome of an American
election is weird
and I have mixed feelings about it, I must say they got some
balls. If I had
to guess, I think their argument is that it's their business if
they are affected
by the result of the election.

Oxford May Suspend Students Who Pointed
Out Network Flaws
07/16/2004 04:50 AMStories like these are way too common these days. Two Oxford
University students, working for the school newspaper, figured out how
easy it was to break into the school's network and access private
student data. They wrote up a front page article on the
vulnerabilities in the system, and
were promptly handed over to the police. The
police told the university to handle it internally, but Oxford is now
looking at suspending the students and potentially fining them as
well. Of course, there's no word whatsoever on whether the university
actually patched the holes in their system. Why is it that so many
people who point out security vulnerabilities are immediately accused
of criminal acts? This only gives good people the incentive
not to find and point out these vulnerabilities -- but you can
be quite sure that those up to no good are already exploiting them.

Imageless RSS Feed Icon for Blogroll
01/09/2004 09:56 PM
Orange icon typically used for RSS feeds is nice
but I had two
problems with it:
First, it was too distracting when there are many of them together
(i.e. blogroll).
Second, IE 6 sometimes fail to load such small images used many
times in a single
page.
Following is a modified version of a CSS-based solution suggested
by which you can find in the comment section of
my IE6
SP1 Small Image Loading Bug post. This version has
following changes:
-
Size was reduced.
-
Colors were toned down and inversed to reduce
distraction.
-
Original look is restored when mouse is hovering over
it.
CSS fragment follows:
.feedIconStyle {
font-family: arial, helvetica;
font-size: 8px;
font-weight: bold;
text-decoration: none;
border: 1px solid;
padding: 0px 2px 0px 2px;
margin: 0px;
vertical-align: middle;
}
.feedIconStyle,
.feedIconStyle:link, .feedIconStyle:visited,
.feedIconStyle:active {
color: #FF9966;
background-color: white;
border-color: #FF9966;
}
.feedIconStyle:hover {
color: white;
background-color: #FF6600;
border-color: #FFC8A4 #7D3302 #3F1A01 #FF9A57;
}
Usage Examples:
<a
href=“blah“
class=“feedIconStyle“>XML</a>
<a
href=“blah“ class=“feedIconStyle“>RSS
2.0</a>
Visit my blog to see how they look. I use the logo in my
