The current ish of Popular Science (August 2004) is on stands now, with a great piece on Charlie Stross and me as science fiction writers who are doing good work on the Singularity (alas, the piece isn't online yet, but it's easy to find in shops). I'm really happy with how it came out, but wanted to give out one tiny bit of errata for the record: the article identifies me as a co-founder of boingboing.net -- although I'm a proud co-editor of BB, the founding was done by my pal Mark Frauenfelder and his wife Carla Sinclair. Super Science Fair Projects: Complete Guide to Science Fair Projects, Topics and Experiments
http://www.super-sc ience-fair-projects.com/

Today your teacher announced that your school is going to have a science fair and students are responsible for exhibiting their projects. What do you feel? Enthusiastic? Despondent? Dreadful? Fearful? Excited?" This statement opens the Super Science Fair Projects site. Actually, whether student or parent, science fair projects, while great ways to get students actively involved in learning the scientific method and problem solving, can be tough assignments. This site may help you with one of the hardest parts: coming up with an idea. The site does a great job of walking the visitor through the steps needed to plan and implement a project, from Choosing a Topic, the Scientific Method, and writing the Project Report. There are even tips on displaying your project, rehearsing, winning over judges, and what to expect the day of the fair. This is definitely a great tool to tap into when planning a science fair project.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

PHP: Less Popular than ADA ?????

PHP: Less Popular than ADA ????? 01/05/2003 09:07 AM
PHP: Less Popular than ADA ????? Slashdot is citing a good article that looks at popularity of programming languages in terms of the number of jobs advertising for them. The number 1 is Java with 2,739 jobs on Monster. PHP, which isn't even on the list, has 189 jobs when I do the query myself. That puts PHP at about 1/2 the popularity of Ada. Oh dear god. [_Go_] On Dice there are just 30 PHP jobs which puts PHP behind Ada, Fortran, Scheme, Python and Smalltalk. And on HotJobs it is impossible to tell how many jobs they have since they are indexing the file extensions of URLs with PHP as searchable text. DOH ! (Try looking at the Entry Level Construction - Training jobs and you'll see that the only citation of PHP is in the url to apply). The FuzzyGroup offers search engine consulting services to avoid this kind of foolishness. We have over 15 years of combined experience in implementing search engine technology and avoiding silliness like this. So does this mean to increase my marketability I need to toss my PHP books out the door and hunker down with books on Fortran or Ada? Yikes. I think I'd rather dig ditches.

XP SP2: Not Popular With Businesses 04/06/2005 12:38 AM

Apparently, the program conflicts Windows XP Service Pack 2 created still have a lot of companies spooked:

AssetMetrix surveyed 136,120 PCs between January 5 and March 10. It found that 37.6 percent of those PCs ran Windows XP. The operating system is more widely adopted among companies with fewer than 500 PCs, where slightly more than half of the PCs run Windows XP, according to the study. Also, smaller organizations show the highest acceptance of SP2, it says.

Of the 251 companies surveyed, 44 had fewer than 10 PCs running Windows XP. Eighty-four, or 40.7 percent, of the remaining companies had not installed SP2 from their XP machines, while 16 companies, or 7.7 percent, had updated their XP-based PCs, according to the AssetMetrix study.

Wi-Fi Use on UK Trains Popular 09/21/2004 12:42 PM
Wi-Fi service on UK trains is seeing solid growth in usage: Use of the service is growing 77 percent week over week, but that figure is a bit misleading because the number of trains offering Wi-Fi is also increasing. However, users are also spending an increasing amount of time on the network and there seems to be an indication that passengers are deciding to buy first class tickets because the Wi-Fi access there is free. In other commuter Wi-Fi news, Sydney, Australia is considering offering Wi-Fi on Sydney ferries....

In a frenzy reminiscent of the dot-com mania of the late 1990s, Web users are bidding for invitations to join Google's test e-mail service before the company begins giving them away enmassed. But those testing the service in its beta version are able to invite a small number friends to join, a loophole that has created a kind of an underground market on the Internet as people from around the world angle to secure the most desirable e-mail addresses.
