Copyright Cartel's Latest Legal Victim

Copyright Cartel's Latest Legal Victim 08/03/2004 09:36 PM
The cartel has killed off 321 Studios, which sold software letting people back up their DVDs. Another scalp for an industry that will sue businesses into the ground when they dare to offer people a way to use the digital music and other "content" they've purchased in the ways they choose for their own personal use. The cartel says anything that can be used for infringement is not allowed to exist. Corporations rule. Customers are supposed to submit. They don't always have to. So, if you need to make a backup of your DVD, you'll now need to work a little harder. You'll have to visit one of the other places.

Tracking ENT support. I've just made a minor change to the ENT 1.0 spec to add an impl ementations section.  Obviously I've listed K-Collector as the first implementation would like to gather together references to anyone who has supported the format in some way.  So, if you know of any software or service which is supporting, or working on supporting, ENT please let me know so that I can add it to the spec document.
[Curiouser and curiouser!]

Let's see - doesn't Blogware support ENT?  Oh yah, not yet?  How 'bout the BBC?  Well I can tell yah Tribe.net will - they're supporting everything!

Ad Supported Mobile Video

Ad Supported Mobile Video 08/06/2004 05:54 AM
While many of the carriers continue to look for ways to get every last dime when it comes to mobile content, it appears that O2 is willing to try a little experiment that you might just recognize: say hello to ad supported content. That's right, O2 and a company named Unanimis Consulting (bet you they need to spell that out for everyone they talk to) have decided to launch a mobile video offering that will be supported by typical commercials. Funny that they do this just as some are saying the traditional TV commercial is dying. Maybe it's just moving to the mobile phone? I would bet not. Moco News points out that this may be a sign of a trend shift where mobile phone service will move towards more ad supported revenue, but it's not going to be with 30 second spots. Since most mobile services and content need to really fit in with what the person is doing, having them deal with a 30 second commercial doesn't seem particularly compelling. Mobile video on the go needs to be flexible in terms of the amount of time it takes, because no one is planning on catching a full TV show on their phone. They're only going to watch at points when they're stuck somewhere with no TV and have a free moment. Sticking commercials into that time doesn't seem like it will attract that much interest.

Public Supported E-Village Fizzles Out 12/12/2003 04:35 AM
An interesting look at an attempt to bridge the digital divide four years ago by putting up a housing project that included free computers and internet access. The article suggests that plan certainly hasn't been a huge success. There was a rough start when many people were unwilling to go through the necessary two week training program to get the free PC. Also, now that the program has used up its funding, no one really knows how well it's done. Not a single study has been done to see how (or if!) the people are actually using these free PCs. More telling, though, is the fact that none of the other similar housing projects has offered the same deal.
