Will Flat Panels Ever Replace CRTs?

Will Flat Panels Ever Replace CRTs?

Will Flat Panels Ever Replace CRTs? 03/20/2003 01:05 PM

When placed next to a sleek flat-panel monitor, a cathode ray tube (CRT) looks bulky and archaic, as much a remnant of the recent past as a rotary-dial phone. But do not count the big boxes out yet. Despite their bulky appearance, CRTs trump flat panels in some areas.

Sponsors, speakers, panels, audience

Sponsors, speakers, panels, audience 05/07/2004 01:39 PM

Supernova and the recently announced Web 2.0 conference are throwbacks to the priorities of old conferences, of the eighties and nineties: sponsors, speakers, panels, audience.

Execs from high tech companies pay sponsorship fees, not disclosed, and guarantee that the content is paid advertising and that nothing real is said on stage. If you don't pay the sponsorship fee, you don't get a speaking slot. If you offend a sponsor, you don't get invited back.

These conferences are all spin, and empty bluster.

A picture named shirky.jpgThe organization of the conferences, with speakers and panels, guarantees that the audience falls asleep or is frustrated, waiting to make their point until they get to ask questions at the end of the session. Questions. What a silly concept. Look in the room. It's pretty likely the people who know the most are in the "audience."

By the end of the day people are in the hallway or outside, talking to each other, and when that gets boring, talking on cell phones.

Now that they have WiFi, at least there's an outlet for the audience's ideas, their blogs.

But as we learned at BloggerCon II, it's totally possible to do a conference without sponsors, without speakers, panels, without an audience. In this model, the rooms are full to capacity and even though there's WiFi, there was hardly any time to post to blogs. You can steal the design for this conference. And if you do, sign me up, I want to be there.

If you really want to get the most out of people's time, switch models. You don't need the money from the sponsors, and you don't need speakers, and you surely don't need an audience.

lg_1980q.jpgThe technical specs of the LG Flatron 1980Q flat-panel monitor aren't that impressive, especially when considering the $800 price, but it does have one neat trick: the ability to be flipped over 150 degrees, automatically switching the image to show correctly past the apex. While that sounds perfectly useless at home, it could be useful on the desk of a bank executive, showing you exactly to what depth your will be penetrated by the terms your new mortgage.

Toshiba ET1 Projector Reviewed 07/01/2004 12:31 PM

toshiba_et1.jpg image

Pocket-Lint reviews the pleasingly droid-like Toshiba ET1 projector, a relatively low-quality (848 x 480 pixel) home projector that is most notable for its swiveling base. The idea is to use the ET1 wherever convenient, like a coffee table, say. This would be fine if the native resolution weren't crap -- 800 x 600 is the bare minimum these days as far as I'm concerned. Pocket-Lint likes it, though, and I suppose for regular television or videogaming, it'd probably be fine. £1000 just seems like a lot of money when there are projectors on the market like the Infocus X2 for even less money.

mitsubishi_proj.jpg imageIf a DLP (digital light processing) projector is your cup of tea, Mitsubishi's announcement of the "LVP-XD450" should be your cup of coffee. According to Mitsubishi, this new projector has the industry's highest brightness and contrast ratio (2,600 Lumens and 2,200:1 respectively; don't know about "highest," but that is pretty good). And since the projectors are rated at screens up to 200-inch, I would be fully willing to review one of these units for anyone who has one on hand, provided you also supply the screen. I doubt my computer could actually run Doom III at this projector's 1280 x 1024 resolution, but Pinkydemons would still be life-sized.

toshiba_tdp_sc25u.jpgToshiba has announced their new DLP Projector, called the TDP-SC25U. Featuring a detachable document camera, the projector weighs just 8.6 pounds and maintains a high level of portability for the roving college professor. It accepts S-video, component and composite inputs and features a monitor output connector that lets users see what's being projected onto an external display. The benefit with this design, as DAPreview points out, is that it affords the presenter the ability to face his audience while presenting instead of needing to turn to review his slides. A suggested price of $1,200 along with a projection distance of up to 33 ft and a diagonal screen size reaching 300 inches makes this projector quite tempting. Toshiba says that it's shipping now, too.

infocus_x3.jpgRobert Silva at About.com has reviewed the new InFocus X3 DLP front projector, the third update to the popular low-end line (there was an X1A before the X2). Silva likes it well enough—besides the update to 1,024 by 768 from 800 by 600 resolution, the X3 sounds a lot like the older models—complaining mainly about the DLP rainbows that are just going to happen in lower-end DLP units. For me, it's a promising sign that an affordable true 720p (1,280 by 720 pixel) DLP projector should be coming soon, which will probably be my stopgap purchase while waiting for 1080p DLP projectors to cost less than a car.
