Flying WiFi - Good For Your Health Too

Flying WiFi - Good For Your Health Too

Flying WiFi - Good For Your Health Too 05/14/2004 01:32 PM

While everyone is talking about how Connexion's WiFi-in-the-sky system is launching with Lufthansa, allowing people to have full internet access while they fly (for a fairly reasonable price, as well), some are pointing out the additional benefits beyond creating one more place where you can be "always on." Now, in the event that someone gets sick on the flight, the crew will use the internet connection to transfer data to an emergency doctor unit on the ground in order to get medical advice remotely. Once again, the unintended (good) consequences of wireless connections are showing up very quickly.

Popular bread maker Panera is making some noise today talking about how wonderful their free WiFi offering is going, saying that it has improved business. They've found that it keeps customers in the stores longer -- especially during off-peak hours. Oddly, they don't say if it actually increased sales, which is the key. Panera's claims sound pretty similar to what Schlotzs ky's Deli had been saying about their free WiFi. Of course, some of Schlotz sky's numbers seemed a tad overhyped, such as the claim that 40% of customers choose Schlotzsky's because of the WiFi. The only way that really makes sense is if very few people are going to Schlotzsky's at all... and, oops, that might just be the case. Today the c hain declared bankruptcy. So, while free WiFi may be good for bringing in business, it's certainly not the be all, end all of being in business. You still need to sell some food and make some money.

Philadelphia is considering investing $10M to blanket 135 square miles with wifi coverage. Some people for whom I have the highest respect, and from whom I've learned a lot, I anticipate are going to denounce this. Their argument is that the government is exactly the wrong entity to make decisions best made by the market. Why? Because: Government agencies are ill-equipped to make technical decisions. Governments are corrupt. The incumbents have too much influence. Even if Philadelphia makes the right decision, it will lock the city into one technology that will be hard to displace. There is no such thing...

Philad elphia is considering investing $10M to blanket 135 square miles with wifi coverage.

I agree with David Weinberger that the wifi project in Philadelphia is a good thing. Like David, I hear and understand the arguments against government running things that businesses can do, but I think that in the case of some of the low cost basic infrastructure like this, I think municipal governments can often deploy and run it just fine. I think that we need to start thinking of parts of our network as assets like roads, which can and should be run by government.

I will add that in most cases I believe in free markets and competition for this sort of thing.

GOOD,
NON-COMMERCIAL HEALTH INFORMATION

GOOD,
NON-COMMERCIAL HEALTH INFORMATION
09/11/2004 10:51 AM
lpiThe Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University has a site with useful information about 'micronutrients': vitamins, minerals, other nutrients (like Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Co-enzyme Q10), phytochemicals (trace chemicals in various plants), and the foods that contain all these nutrients. For each nutrient, you can learn its impact on the body, diseases it can help prevent or treat, where you can get it, and interactions with other nutrients, foods and drugs. The entire database can also be sorted by disease instead of by nutrient. Pauling was known, of course, for his controversial claim that large doses of vitamins can prevent the common cold and other diseases.

The site is very thorough, quite technical (but still comprehensible), and makes fascinating reading.

Thanks to tudogs.com for the link.

Speaking of health information, Health Central (the Dr. Dean Edell site) hosts the full (from what I can ascertain) contents of one of my favourite books, The People's Pharmacy. Learn how to make safe, effective treatments from natural, common ingredients that work better than most over-the-counter remedies. Find out which alternative remedies work, which are placebos and which are downright dangerous.

The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Use SSID "FreeInternetAccess" or "seattlewireless" to connect - You may have to assign yourself an IP in the range 192.168.0.0/24 and use the Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 as the DHCP is sometimes flakey

Searching the internet for health information can be a tricky business, especially if you're not sure where to start. Perhaps you know a friend or a neighbour who has recently been told by their GP that further tests will be undertaken ... Where do you start looking for pertinent answers or just simple reassurance if you're not familiar with this field? This has been added to Healthcare Resources 2005 Internet MiniGuide.

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy 07/16/2004 04:50 PM
A few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's WiFi Seeker, a convenient keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced WiFi Spy is a rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform identically.

To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.

GM in trouble: "If you erased the company name from the balance sheet and showed it to a forensic accountant, the recommended treatment would probably be to seek protection from creditors by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. " GM's troubles are as much a result of the exploding costs of health care as they are due to the company's dropping market share. In Canada increasing health care costs (PDF with many charts) are taking a greater and greater share of government expenditures. In the US it's hurting big employers and regular people. But either way the problem doesn't seem likely to get better any time soon.

Unitarianism: good enough for two
presidents, not good enough for Texas
05/19/2004 02:47 AM
The state of Texas has denied Unitarians tax-exempt religious status because the church "does not have one system of belief." As Julia notes, Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams were sufficiently convinced of the Unitarians' religiosity that they actually were Unitarians.
Never before -- not in this state or any other -- has a government agency denied Unitarians tax-exempt status because of the group's religious philosophy, church officials say. Strayhorn's ruling clearly infringes upon religious liberties, said Dan Althoff, board president for the Denison congregation that was rejected for tax exemption by the comptroller's office.

Bob wants to put WiFi in the Sky. “So here’s my plan for really cheap aerial Internet service. I’m preparing a number of experiments using a Linksys WRT54GS 802.11g router mounted on the roof of my house in Charleston, SC. The router is running Sveasoft firmware that gives me direct control of transmitter power if needed. I’ll be testing it with a variety of antennas, mainly omnidirectional but perhaps I’ll try a sector antenna, too. The other end of the wireless connection will be a second WRT54GS mounted in my funky homebuilt airplane. Operating the pair of routers as an Ethernet-to-Ethernet bridge will give me much higher performance than I could ever expect from just using a WiFi card in my notebook computer. And I’ll be testing a variety of antennas on the belly of my funky airplane, too.”

Where's My Flying Car?

Where's My Flying Car? 11/17/2003 07:51 PM
It's been decades since people have suggested that everyone would have a flying car or a personal jetpack. There are any number of "flying" technologies that futurists expected to be commonplace by the new millennium, and here we are a few years in and we're still pretty firmly grounded. MSNBC is looking at seven "promised" flying technologies that still haven't come home - from flying cars to personal jetpacks to regular supersonic commercial air travel (bye bye Concorde) to space tourism. Some of these may come true eventually, but they've all been talked about for years, and we don't seem that much closer.
