And Now ... Wireless PC Monitors

And Now ... Wireless PC Monitors 03/20/2003 01:05 PM

They provide freedom from the desktop in the home or business office, but are wireless PC monitors worth their own, albeit lighter, weight? Some industry analysts argue that their higher price and limited functionality, plus the size dilemma -- they seem either too big or too small -- will inhibit the popularity of wireless monitors among consumers.

The Mother of All Monitors

The Mother of All Monitors 05/21/2004 05:21 PM

If a 23 inch diagonal flat panel monitor just isn't big enough for you, how about strapping four of them together for a panoramic, Grand Canyon-like view?

With its ultra-widescreen format, phenomenal image quality, stunning aluminum construction and spectacular high-resolutions, the new Grand Canyon Displays are the ultimate solution for any creative professional, medical, military, engineering, modeling, high-end audio/video editing, TV Broadcast applications, and graphics-intensive computing needs.

You too can have the Cinerama on your desktop for a mere $18,000. Oh, and don't forget the three additional video cards you'll need to drive it, which of course requires that you've got a machine with expansion slots to spare.

This monitor array is only one of the many slightly quirky products that can be found at the Lieberman Go-L website (is that pronounced "go-el", or "gol" as in "golly"?) It's interesting to poke around on the website; many high-end computing devices and peripherals, priced higher than even Apple's wares. All on a website that bears a striking resemblance to Apple's own (I wonder if Apple Legal has seen that site yet.)

How Much Power do LCD Monitors Save?

How Much Power do LCD Monitors Save? 06/01/2004 06:01 AM

How much do you save with LCD monitors?: My wife and I are slowly switching our entire house over to flouresent light bulbs — you know, those spiral looking things? We're doing this because we're sick and tired of changing burnt out incandescent bulbs, and these are supposed to last so much longer. They also use a lot less power. The bulbs I got are meant to replace 60-watt incandescent bulbs, yet they use just 23 watts. Bonus.

This got me thinking about power consumption, and then about LCD monitors, since they apparently use much less power than an equivalent CRT. I have a 19" CRT that has served me well, but is getting a little dimmer with every passing month. I thought, if I I could prove significant power savings, then perhaps my wife would let me buy a nice, new flat panel.

I found this article over at CNet which, sadly, doesn't quite prove my case, but is interesting nonetheless. The savings are there, but they're not quite enough to justify a 17" LCD (about $400 minimum), which I would need to equal the screen area of my 19" CRT. Too bad.

...the approximate cost of using the LCD 24 hours a day is $3.74 per month. If you use this device for three years, the extended power cost for the life of the device would be $134.78.

By comparison, if you had a CRT device consuming 90 watts with the same usage requirements, its monthly power consumption would be $6.48, and its three-year usage cost would be $233.68. So simply using the LCD device for the same requirement over three years of 24-hour usage would give a savings of nearly $100. In locations with high energy costs (such as California), this savings can exceed $130 over the three-year term (assuming a $0.14 rate).

You also have to consider that these calculations assume the monitor is running 24 hours a day, which mine isn't. It's more like two hours. So that puts my power savings down to less than $10 over three years.

Just the other day, however, I visited a brand new customer service call center. They had all brand new equipment, including 15" LCDs on each desk. I wondered at the time how they could justify the purchase of LCDs when they're still twice as much as CRTs and desk space didn't seem to be an issue. But when you consider that these monitors are on 24 hours a day, perhaps the power savings is enough to influence the decision.

Bill Wilson's little "single process stack of system monitors" known as GKrellM has become so popular some refer to it (or just use it) as geek eye-candy rather than as the very nice performance monitoring tool that it is. In fact, GKrellM is so popular it may have more plugins than other projects have users. Actually, I think it's not so much that GKrellM has morphed itself into eye-candy so much as that since the very beginning it's been designed as a Swiss Army knife kind of utility.

Australian developer David Watanabe has released version 0.5 of NewsFire, his RSS (Really Simple Syndication) reader that enables you to monitor news sites, blogs and other online publications that offer RSS feeds. The new version adds title and summary list styles and allows you to hide feeds as well as select smart feeds as a condition in other smart feeds. NewsFire supports the RSS and Atom feed formats and imports and exports OPML, the standard file format for news feeds. You can also import feeds from another newsreader. The software is still in Beta and is a free download; Watanabe plans on ultimately releasing it as shareware.
