Apple is not the good guy

Apple is not the good guy 05/14/2004 01:49 PM
Arro gance + Insanity = iTunes Patent.

Apple has been granted a patent for its iTunes interface, marking the latest milestone in a path of preposterous interface patents that started with Amazon’s 1-click e-commerce feature. What is Apple protecting? Does the company have serious software rivals in the Mac universe? Is there a developer in the Windows universe that doesn’t consider iTunes to be an undeveloped weakling among desktop media players? Compared to iRiver’s Media Jukebox, MusicMatch, and even the wretched RealPlayer (which is not represented by any interface patents, despite being ten years old), iTunes is an inconsequential plaything.

But only one competitor matters, and this patent is no doubt shielding iTunes from the thieving designs of Microsoft, which, as every Neptunian knows, attained world domination the last time it raided Apple’s interface.

[The Digital Music Weblog]

Just remember who Apple is the next time you open up your PowerBook. This is not to say that Micrsoft aren't stone cold bastards either - but that doesn't make Apple the good guys.

Apple III: one-click to buy = good; 20

Apple III: one-click to buy = good; 20
clicks and 2 phone calls to return = bad

But alas, the story is not a completely happy one. For in addition to the iMac, I needed a router. At first bought a Belkin router from the Apple site. (By now, I had changed the one-click preferences to ship to my parents, so I was able to buy the Belkin router with one click.) But then seeing that I could get a Belkin wireless router elsewhere (of course, not on the site selling Airports), I tried to cancel the order from Apple. Yet when I went to return the Belkin router, life was not so simple. There was no link in the confirming email, and it took a good routing around on the Apple site till I found a web form to request the canceling of an order (it was too late to call, I discovered after calling). So literally 20 minutes after I placed the order, on Christmas Day, I sent a request to cancel it. Today, five days later, I received an email informing me that it was too late to cancel the order -- which I had discovered, since my Dad called to say the router had arrived. Twenty minutes on hold later, I received a RMA to return the router -- of course, we pay shipping. I wonder just what the thinking of the Apple Exec who set up this one-click-to-buy, a million-clicks-to-fail-to-cancel system was: "We'll make it really hard for them to cancel an order, and maybe they'll get so frustrated, they just won't cancel it!" Yes, that is brilliant. Oh well, here's to the Crazy Ones.

Supporting Server Clusters 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
Server clusters -- separate servers interconnected to provide high availability and able to be managed as a single system -- have gained popularity as IT budgets have shrunk and the technology of clustering has matured, reducing IT skill set requirements. But IT shops still may harbor some apprehension when it comes to taking the cluster plunge.

Efficiently Updating Web Sites on
Clusters
01/15/2003 12:51 PM
At the time, our web site ran on a 2.2.x Linux distribution on a dual Dell 2450. Its performance was rock solid, but we were uneasy relying on a single machine for our entire business. We determined that the answer was to replace the single server with a cluster. For less than the cost of the Dell, we built a cluster of four 1U one-processor machines. The cluster's performance was excellent. By stripping down Apache, we could support at least 400 downloads over HTTP and still have a responsive site. This left one problem: we needed to be able to update the site often without affecting the performance. -- M. David Minnigerode

Anyone following the high performance computing industry has probably noticed the growing popularity of Linux cluster systems. The 23rd Top 500 list, a ranking of the world's most powerful supercomputers, reported that clusters make up more than 50 percent of the list. The appeal is easy to understand; Linux clusters are a fraction of the cost of traditional supercomputers while providing blazingly fast performance numbers. Many organizations from national labs to Hollywood special effects shops have reported performance increases that their previous systems couldn't touch. With such widespread appeal and tangible benefits, the migration to cluster systems seems inevitable for many organizations.
