IBM Unveils New Network Storage Device

IBM Unveils New Network Storage Device

IBM Unveils New Network Storage Device 03/20/2003 01:05 PM

Comparing the size of its new NAS (network attached storage) device to that of a pizza box, IBM has announced the new NAS 100, a storage device targeted at companies that have little or no IT staff. The NAS 100, which is geared toward organizations like banks and retail outlets, will be available next month.

Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage
06/15/2004 11:54 AM

linksys_nslu.jpg imageWhile they're promoting it with Maxtor, there's nothing stopping you from using Linksys's new Network Storage Link (NSLU2) with any external USB hard drive to turn it into a network storage device (not unlike the Mirra or other backup units). Storage Link even provides passworded web-access to files and multiple users (although they don't get into the details of how multi-user sharing will work). Since the Storage Link works via RJ-45 (regular ol' Ethernet), there's nothing preventing you from attaching it to a wireless router and using it over WiFi, either (albeit at lower speeds than a wired network, of course). Even better, it sounds like you can continue to add additional USB hard drives to the device to increase storage as you go along. Not bad for $100.

Vote to create comp.lang.php newsgroup

Vote to create comp.lang.php newsgroup 06/26/2002 01:01 PM
RATIONALE: comp.lang.php An alt.php newsgroup currently exists and is well used, and there is also an alt.comp.lang.php group in existence. Not all servers carry alt.* newsgroups, however, essentially splitting the PHP Usenet community. Almost all news servers carry the comp.lang.* groups, which would make the group more accessible to users, in addition to unifying the two "Usenet PHP factions." Furthermore, every respected programming language has a group under comp.lang.*. PHP has matured into a respected (and powerful) language widely in use. As such, a group in the comp.lang.* hierarchy seems appropriate at this time. Finally, posts in comp.lang.* groups are retained longer than posts in alt.* groups on many servers, another reason that a switch to a comp.lang.* group would benefit the PHP community. Review: Linux Client Migration Cookbook

Review: Linux Client Migration Cookbook 02/01/2005 08:49 PM
Even the most hapless management automatons are aware of the licensing and maintenance costs associated with perpetuating a Windows workplace. As security concerns escalate and the reliability of Windows diminishes, the appeal of desktop Linux intensifies. Ready or not, businesses must heed the migratory instinct, or risk getting left behind. The Linux Client Migration Cookbook, an IBM Redbook written by a group of seasoned IT specialists and freely downloadable from IBM's Web site, is a balanced and informative guide to practical migration.
