Using Technology To Do The Wave For You
Using Technology To Do The Wave For You
12/24/2004 12:18 PMIf there ever were a story made for the "Too Much Free Time" category,
this one is probably it. A year in the making, yesterday was the
unveiling of the very first SMSWave. If you're a sports fan,
you're probably familiar with "The Wave" whether you like it or
consider it to be ruining the sport (there are some who feel that
way). This is where everyone in the stands is so bored by what's
happening on the field that they stand up and sit down one after
another in a pattern that makes it look like there's a wave going
through the stands. Well, apparently that wasn't good enough for some
people, who decided to update The Wave for the digital, mobile age.
They set up a system where fans SMS their seat location to a specific
phone number. The system then calculates where everyone is, and sets
off their phones flashing and making noise in a pattern to make a
similar wave effect in mobile phone noise and sound. Sounds lovely,
right? Even better, they've now patented the idea, so don't go around
trying to copy it yourself. Please. We'll all be better off.

Underground French Cinema (literally) Three days later,
when the police returned accompanied by experts from the French
electricity board to see where the power was coming from, the phone
and electricity lines had been cut and a note was lying in the middle
of the floor: "Do not," it said, "try to find
us." A secret underground cinema is found in the
Catacombs of Paris,
"You guys have no

cataphiles called the
"Perforating Mexicans".

How Old Is E-Commerce?
08/11/2004 01:37 PMAccording to News.com,
we're officially at the
10-year anniversary of electronic commerce, as defined by the
first secure transaction on NetMarket, on August 11, 1994. The folks
at the Internet Shopping Network disagree, claiming they started a few
months earlier. Of course, it all depends on how you define
"e-commerce." This article seems to define it as a secure, web-based
transaction. However, even before these started showing up, I
remember purchasing CDs from CDNow and CDConnection using
telnet in either 1993 or early 1994, and I'm sure plenty of
others could make claims to earlier "online" purchases. It certainly
wasn't secure, but who was worried about security back then? Of
course, it doesn't really matter when e-commerce really started, but
it is amusing that no one seems to remember those pre-web offerings.

Surfers are a
lazy, cowardly lot, but by nature also rather inventive. So rather
than get up in the wee hours of the morning to check the waves, Elmar
Trefz develop a special pillow that connects to a PC that vibrates
depending on what wave conditions are like that morning. That way, if
the breakers aren't even breaking, you can roll back over in your hut
or cocoon or whatever it is that surfers nest in at night, and sleep
until you have to go to "work." (Thanks, Mike!)

CHI
2004By John.N.Latta
Wa
ve Issue 0420 05/28/04
April 27 - 39
Vienna, Austria
The WAVE Report
found that CHI 2004 is refreshing in the diversity of thinking. In
many respects, this is the product of looking into the future. It is
also scary in that, if only a fraction of what is presented here comes
to pass, the role of the box, or PC as we know it, will be
substantially diminished. Such is the evolution of technology. The
WAVE Report also believes that there is also myopia at CHI 2004. Much
of what is show here needs a digital infrastructure, a topic we have
written about extensively. Yet, the existence of such an
infrastructure, at least in the near term, is problematic. Display
technology is also taken for granted and large size displays at
reasonable prices are still in the future.
We continue to
look for how all this technology will make for better lives for
individuals and families. Even here we saw some interesting clues.
What makes CHI 2004 different is that it is focused on the human
aspect of applying computing technology. Something we rarely see
outside of this venue. In all these aspects CHI 2004 is refreshing - a
hype less gaze into the future.
CHI
2004 Connect
It would appear at
first glance, easy to dismiss this as an academic conference from a
SIG of the ACM. But the same rapid dismissal would not apply to
SIGGRAPH, the annual event in computer graphics, also from another ACM
SIG. When it comes to the interaction between computers and humans,
nearly all research leads to CHI. Thus, it is a barometer of
activities which could define the future of computing and how humans
will interact with these devices. With over 20 years of CHI
conferences, it is not sampled in a day. However, our focus is more
direct trends in interaction devices and in particular the
pen.
Yet, as one samples the threads here one cannot
escape the following impressions:
There are shifts
in the role of computing away from the box to ubiquitous and
pervasive computing environments;
Displays and
mobile devices are but two artifacts of this shift, not the basis for
it; and
The environment,
including Ambient Intelligence, is another factor in this
shift.
What is important
is that the metaphors we associate with the computers interface now,
such as the mouse and keyboard, do not directly associate with these
new environments. As talks reflected here, the interface can be as
simple as the eyes for observation, the feet, a pen and many others.
The desktop is more of a boundary condition, not the environment of
the future.

The Brazilian wave
The Brazilian wave
06/30/2004 02:45 AMAside from the hype and deart
h of useful ideas, social software has exposed some interesting
trends that I didn't know existed. I know I'm not alone in this, but
I'm fascinated by a trend that has been going on for about a year and
shows no signs of stopping: Brazilians are dominating social software
networks.
I guess it makes sense when you think about it. They've got a
country with fairly free laws that
promote creativity. While they're generally poor on a per capita
basis, they have the largest online population in South
America.
Recently, Orkut put
them neck and neck with Americans on the system and new language
tools were added so you could basically cruise the site entirely
within groups that posted in just Brazilian Portuguese, or just
English. Fotolog had the famous case
of Brazilian cam
girls competing neck and neck with American photographers last
summer. I suspect even with pricing changes at Fotolog, the
Brazilians won out in terms of membership numbers since then. Ever
since Globo's Blogger install
launched a couple years ago, the service has skyrocketed in user
numbers. T
his person claims Brazil is likely to be the second largest group
of bloggers after Americans.
Thanks to the enthusiasm of Brazilian users and the democratic
nature of these networks, you see Brazil outpacing the participation
and number of Americans. The virtual world is relatively new and
doesn't have many limitations beyond the obstacles of getting online
in the first place, so the world is on an even playing field so to
speak. I find it fascinating that in this new, more open, and more
equal environment, Brazil is doing so well. I don't know what it means
for the future of Brazil or America, both online and offline, but it's
certainly an interesting trend worth watching.
