I don't mind sharing Internet access but
what about the files on my computers?
02/17/2004 12:58 PMHi, i have just bought a wireless router and pc card to use at home
(my laptop and stationary). I had heard about War chalking so did a
search to see how safe it was to use this WLAN. To be honest, i am
scared of installing it now. I absolutely don't mind my neighbours
being able to connect to the internet through my WLAN, actually I
think I might even go and put a letter through theri letter box
informing them about it, but before i do i just want to clear a couple
of things up: -- Just because they can access the Internet through
my WLAN, can they see all the files on my computer. The thing is that
I have 3 computers at home and I still want them to be able to share
files. I don't think any of my neighbours are seriel hackers but hey,
if the info is staring you in them in the face they just might be
tempted to look. If i am honest, i think i would. -- Will this
drastically slow down my internet connection? Thanks guys, i am
just a newby to the WLAN world so please gentle :-
Latest Study Says People Sharing Fewer

Latest Study Says People Sharing Fewer
Files Online
01/05/2004 03:42 AMThe recording industry is cheering about how the latest study from the
folks at the Pew Internet and American Life project says that
fewer people
are saying they're downloading music. Beyond the obvious problem
that this study only counts what people
say they're doing, I
don't think it's surprising at all. Of course people are going to be
more cautious when there's a chance they're going to get sued.
However, I don't see how this is a good thing. All they've done is
annoy a bunch of people who should be their best customers. That
doesn't seem like very smart business.

Flooding File Sharing Networks With
Bogus Files: Patented
05/05/2004 05:10 PMWell, here's a nice convergence story covering two topics we discuss
on a regular basis: file sharing and ridiculous patents. A computer
science professor has now
received a patent on the process of flooding a file sharing
network with bogus files to annoy people trying to download files.
How is this not obvious? It didn't take a professor and a doctoral
student to come up with this idea. Plenty of folks in the industry
just went ahead and did it themselves. The professor also makes the
same tired old mistake of saying that file sharing is the same thing
as stealing a CD out of a store - something that even the Supreme
Court has
said is
not true. Copyright infringement is definitely illegal, but it's
not the same thing as stealing a physical object. Of course, some may
say that this will make it more expensive for others to flood such P2P
networks with fake files (and therefore a good thing), but relying on
a bad patent isn't the way to go. I wonder if this patent covers
flooding the patent office with bogus patents as well?

Why encrypted emails don't work
Why encrypted emails don't work
06/14/2004 10:01 AMToday, I got an encrypted email. Which is fine, as I use
PGP and all
- but it was sent to my work address using my private key. (Yes, they
are separate - they
have to be separate.)
After much hassling and back-and-forthing of the email messages and
keys, I managed to open the original mail. In which, it said:
"If you can't open this email, it's because I've used your PGP
key from the jspwiki.org<
/a> -site. Do you have a corporate one?"
Well, DUH.
Sending encrypted mail means that the mail cannot be read unless you
have the proper key. And it does not help much to ask for the key in
the encrypted mail itself - because if I could read it, you wouldn't
need to ask, now would you? My public PGP key
very clearly also does not include my work address, so one would think
I don't want work-related email using it...
Oh well.
Even if simple usability issues such as key management seem to be
difficult to fathom, then how on earth are people supposed to
understand basic concepts of security - signing, encryption, choosing
wise passwords, keeping your PGP secret keys really secret, key
revokation, etc.
It's not gonna work. Unless someone figures out a far, far more
comprehensible manner of explaining security than currently is used.
Security is too abstract. People can't comprehend it. We need a way
to make security more concrete, much like having an actual physical
lock.

MVK has a new line
of hard drive enclosures for the security folk, called the "impact
Encrypted HDD Enclosure" line. Available in 40 bit and 128 bit
encryption models, each enclosure includes three "security keys"
necessary to access the data on the hard drive that is
enclosed. I'll also guess and say that they require some sort
of special formatting, because otherwise it seems like someone could
just steal the entire assembly and remove the hard drive.
