Aliencamel.com announces that the email-storage-space race is over. This race was started by Google's Gmail service offering 1GB of storage. AlienCamel has gone the final step and is now offering its users unlimited storage. By removing limits on space, users now have a simple, low-cost service which will keep their emails safe, secure and backed up forever. AlienCamel has implemented the most sophisticated anti-spam filtering and email-virus-blocking technology over the last 18 months. Now, AlienCamel is the first independent commercial email service in the world to offer "unlimited storage for personal email". [PRWEB Aug 17, 2004]

Yahoo/Gmail war: Yahoo dialup users also
get a storage boost
06/16/2004 10:20 AM
Folllowing up on this post about Yahoo webmail users receiving upgraded storage capacity in an apparent attempt by Yahoo to compete with Gmail, Boing Boing reader Brian says, "As a member of SBC Yahoo dial-up service, I received a notice yesterday that my email account now has a 2 Gig storage capacity. Obviously, this is separate from the free web-based email service from Yahoo, but 2 Gigs is bar far the most storage available to date, worldwide."

Yahoo upgrades email storage to 1GB

Yahoo upgrades email storage to 1GB 03/23/2005 02:23 AM
Yahoo plans to once again raise its free email storage, this time to 1GB. The rise in email storage matches the same email storage offered by search rival Google. The storage change is said to begin in late April for Yahoo's free email users, whose current storage mark is set to 250MB. Yahoo said that it will take about two weeks for their free email users to see the difference.

Yahoo's storage boost comes only one week after Google began giving Gmail accounts to random visitors of its homepage. The giving of random Gmail accounts has raised speculation of Google possibly allowing Gmail accounts available to the public on April 1st, one year after Gmail's beta launch. Yahoo's vice president of communications products, Brad Garlinghouse, said in an interview that the storage upgrade is not a response to Google's latest actions.

Yahoo will also offer anti-virus scanning provided by Symantec.

The only real surprise here is that it took Yahoo! this long to figure out they need to increase the amount of storage they offered their webmail users following Google's 1 gig Gmail announcement over a month ago. They're now offering 100 megs for free, and paid users get "virtually unlimited storage" - but no details are given on just how "virtual" those non-limits are. Either way, they're going to have a tough time keeping up with Gmail.

Yahoo Defines Virtually Unlimited As 2
Gigs

Yahoo Defines Virtually Unlimited As 2
Gigs
06/15/2004 03:32 AM
Last month, Yahoo responded to Google's Gmail by saying they would offer 100 megs of email for free and virtual ly unlimited storage to those who paid. We wondered how they defined virtually unlimited and now we know. It turns out that, according to Yahoo, vi rtually unlimited is 2 gigs at $20. Doesn't seem all that unlimited, but Yahoo is clearly counting on the press to focus on how two gigs tops the one gig of Google. So far, that's exactly what the press is doing. Most seem to brush over the fact that Yahoo's 2 gigs cost money while Google's 1 gig is free. Anyway, the one thing made clear by all of this: online storage space is (once again) a commodity. While some think that's a bad thing, it really means that there are a ton of new possibilities for services to be built around tons of free online storage. Understand ing commoditization is critical for any tech company these days - and recognizing when something becomes a commodity is the first step. Next up is figuring out how to use that to your advantage.
